CBS News/New York Times Poll For release: Tuesday March 5, 2013 6:30 PM ET The Next Pope: Americas

Catholics Seek Change February 23 27, 2013

As the College of Cardinals prepares to choose a new Pope, most U.S. Catholics (66%) want a younger Pope with new ideas, and most would want him to liberalize his teachings on issues such as birth control, permitting priests to marry, and ordaining women all policies that U.S. Catholics strongly support. The next Pope faces the task of leading a Church that most American Catholics (53%) say is out of touch. Still, there is optimism: three-quarters express at least some confidence that the next Pope chosen will be in touch with todays Catholics. The Vaticans handling of recent sex abuse scandals continues to undermine it: 55% say that has made them question Church leadership, up substantially from 2010. Pope Benedict XVI retires with net positive favorable ratings (40% positive to 9% negative) but he does not match the overwhelmingly positive views (92%) of his predecessor Pope John Paul II.

When Pope Benedict XVI ascended to the Papacy after his 78th birthday in 2005, he was known for defending traditional Catholic teachings and values. As he becomes the first Pope to retire since the Middle Ages, most Catholics 66% - would prefer the next Pope to be younger with new ideas, rather than older with more experience. Would You Like the Next Pope to Be? (Among Catholic Americans) All Attend Mass Catholics 1/week+ Less often Younger with new ideas 66% 65% 68% Older with more experience 26 23 29 More specifically, over half of Catholics 54% - would like the next Pope to change to more liberal teachings than those of Pope Benedict. (Among Catholic Americans) All Attend Mass Catholics 1/week+ Less often Change to more liberal teachings 54% 40% 67% Continue Pope Benedicts teachings 19 31 9 Change to more conservative teachings 18 22 14

Most Catholics show strong support for the next Pope to liberalize the Churchs position on a number of issues, including the use of condoms to prevent the spread of HIV, the use of artificial methods of birth control, allowing priests to marry, and letting women become priests. Most Catholics think the next Pope should continue to support the Catholic Churchs opposition to the death penalty and legalized abortion. Should the Next Pope Favor or Oppose? Regardless, Catholics dont think it is necessary to agree with the Pope on issues like abortion and birth control in order to be a faithful member of the Church. 83% of Catholics think its possible to disagree with the Pope on issues like these and still be a good Catholic, and 78% of American Catholics are more likely to follow their own conscience rather than the Popes teachings (13%) on difficult moral issues. On Difficult Moral Questions, are You More Likely to Follow? Just 39% of Catholics say the Church is in touch with the needs of Catholics today, and far more, 53%, say it is out of touch. Is the Catholic Church in Touch with Needs of Catholics? (Among Catholic Americans) In touch 39% Out of touch 53 But 74% of Catholics have at least some confidence that the College of Cardinals will select a Pope who will be in touch. Still, they are less confident today than they were in 2005. Two-thirds of Catholics would allow priests to marry, and two-thirds would also allow women to become ordained as priests. As has long been the case, almost eight in 10 Catholics favor the use of birth control. That only drops a bit - to 69% - among the strongest church-goers. Do You Yourself Favor ? However there are some differences of opinion within the Catholic community: stronger adherents - those who attend Mass more frequently - tend to follow Church guidance on the issues more. Catholics tend to take a more politically liberal stance on allowing illegal immigrants to apply for citizenship. Six in ten would allow it, including three in four Hispanic Catholics.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1585 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone February 2327, 2013. Phone numbers were dialed from RDD samples of both standard land-lines and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher. An oversample of Catholics was interviewed, for a total of 580 interviews. The results were then weighted in proportion to the adult population. The margin of error for the sample of Catholics is four points. This poll release conforms to the Standards of Disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.
