Practical work N 2: Motivation and supporting Reading.

Reading is one of the skills that learners have to acquire in learning a foreign language because the purpose of learning to read in a foreign language has been to have access to the literature written in that language; moreover,we have to bear in mind that reading is one of the most personal of the language skills because it tends to be a solitary activity. It is also one of the most useful skill students can learn because they can carry it outside the classroom for the rest of their lives; beside, reading is one way communicative competence develops. So Instruction in reading and reading practice thus become essential parts of language teaching at every level. Moreover, in language instruction, teachers have to take into account the type of texts (newspaper articles, and travel and tourism Web sites which can become appropriate material for reading lesson) and how you use it in a lesson. There are a plethora of techniques to teach reading as well as reading activities in texts books; however, the focus of the lesson may be on reading a particular passage but having a diverse lesson plan will enable students who are good at other aspects of English to still participate and feel confident in their abilities while working to improve an area they are weaker at. There are activities useful in motivating and evaluating reading; such as: Reading Partners which is one way to encourage students to read; evenmore, it is a useful activity to encourage students to read a text because they will feel more relax to speak to a mate that to the teacher. In this activity, students have to work in pair in order to plan and discuss reading choosing a text to read (the same text for the pair); additionally, the teacher have to set aside time in the class for pairs to discuss and share responses so the will help each other with the passage. Reading homework this activity is for students to read at home in order to maximize language development. Teacher must be clear in

how much homework is set and how students will report it (orally or written) and when check it teacher could ask students how long the reading and the report have taken and if they enjoy the book or passage. Easy or hard? It is an activity to have a feedback from the students where they have to express if they find the text read easy or difficult. In this activity the teacher has to prepare an easy or difficult form which they have to fill whenever they finish reading and when they have to pick up this form from the teachers desk, he/she had the opportunity to chat with the students about the passage chosen and he/she would notice if the student understood the text or not. Talking about the book: it is an activity where everybody in the classroom and the teacher can determine if students have read the book by means of an interview where the teacher asks general questions about the book or text. While students certainly need practice reading material in English,but it is important that you include short speaking, listening and writing activities whenever possible in your reading lessons. Book application: Strategy: Reading partners (reading the text) and talking about the book or text (checking the activity) and reading homework. Story or passage: Meet Americas favourite Family (flashlight 1 page 60) Teacher shows pictures of famous family TV shows and asks students about them (who they are? Where are they from? How do you know them? Which is their surname?). Before reading, teacher tells students that they are going to work in pair in a collaborative way (helping each other); afterwards, teacher asks students to open the book on page 60 where is the text Meet Americas Favourite Family.

Teacher asks Students who the Americas favourite family is pointing to the picture, so students answer The Simpsons; later, teacher asks students to read the article in pair and answer if the sentences in exercise N 2 are true of false (time: 15). In checking the activity, we could use the activity talking about the book or text, in this case, while teacher checks the activity N2 (true or false), he/she asks why is the statements are true or false; subsequently, teacher asks question in order to determine if students have read the passage as well as if they have understood. Finally, teacher as homework asks students to read about any other TV family series they know and write a paragraph about them.
