Edgar Allan Poe was described by no
less than Lord Alfred Tennyson as the most
original genius ever produced in America.
Thomas Hardy thought him to be “the first to
realize in full the possibility of the English language.”
A new book on Poe by London-based writer Peter Ackroyd draws on
letters, first-hand accounts and public documents to present a fascinating
account of the life of this troubled genius. The book has all the
unexpected twists and turns of a good novel.
Edgar Poe was born in Boston in 1809. Orphaned when he was 3, Poe
was taken in by John Allan, a wealthy merchant from Richmond, Va.
Unable to support himself when the relationship soured, Poe enlisted in
Mold Removal the U.S. Army as a private in 1827. That same year his first book was
published, but it sold less than 50 copies. Poe left the Army and enrolled
at West Point, and when that, too, ended in failure, he turned to
journalism.
Throughout most of his life, Poe scrambled for money. He was an
alcoholic, and his relationships with women were complex. Ackroyd
says that Poe often courted women who were not available, sometimes
getting entangled with more than one at a time. In 1835, he married his

2008 BEAR HARVEST
Harrisburg - According to official 2008 bear harvest figures
released Feb. 25th by the Pennsylvania Game Commission,
hunters took a total of 3,458 bears, which included 69 bears
during the second archery bear season, Nov. 19-20; 2,951 bears
during the statewide 3-day season, Nov. 24-26; and 438 bears
during the extended season, Dec. 1-6, that was open in select
areas of the state.
This harvest ranks second among Pennsylvania’s annual
bear harvests. In 2005, hunters set a record harvest of 4,164
bears. Other recent harvests were: 3,075 in 2000; 3,063 in
2001; 2,686 in 2002; 3,000 in 2003; 2,972 in 2004; 3,122 in
2006; and 2,360 in 2007.
“This year’s harvest was what we had expected, as many
areas had above-average bear populations,” said Mark
Ternent, Game Commission bear biologist. “There were a few
exceptions to this, like Clinton and Cameron counties in WMU
2G, where poor acorn crops contributed to a smaller harvest,
but elsewhere across the state, harvest generally increased.
“In WMU 3A, the increase was pronounced, as the black
cherry crop was good, and there was plenty of standing corn.
In fact, we suspect this availability of food may have drawn
some bears from parts of WMU 2G into WMU 3A.”
Ternent also noted that bears were taken in 54 counties, and
increase from 2007, when bears were taken in 49 counties.
“More bears were taken in counties traditionally labeled as
periphery ‘bear range’” Ternent said. “We have been expecting
this expansion, which is reflected in the significant increase in
bear harvest in WMUs 1A and 1B.”
The largest bear taken was a 716-pound (estimated live
weight) male taken in Tobyhanna Township, Monroe County,
by Morgan C. Neipert, of Tobyhanna, on Nov. 25. In all, 12
bears taken by hunters weighed 600 pounds or more,
continuing to reinforce Pennsylvania’s status as a major bear
hunting destination.
The bear harvest by WMU for all three seasons combined
(archery, 3-day, and extended), including 2007’s harvest results
in parentheses, were: WMU 1A, 21 (7); WMU 1B, 67 (29);
WMU 2A, 1, (1), WMU 2C, 227 (238); WMU 2D, 166 (94);
WMU 2E, 117 (50); WMU 2F, 246 (224); WMU 2G, 729 (545);
WMU 3A, 313 (186); WMU 3B, 392 (214); WMU 3C, 177 (145);
WMU 3D, 199 (193); WMU 4A, 145 (100); WMU 4B, 43 (42);
WMU 4C, 105 (54); WMU 4D, 456 (184); WMU 4E, 53 (54); and
WMU 5C, 1 (0).
Harvest by county and region, with 2007’s figure in
parenthesis, were: Northcentral: Potter, 294 (106); Lycoming,
252 (139); Tioga, 236 (121); McKean, 141 (103); Clinton, 139
(171); Centre, 129 (60); Clearfield, 115 (81); Elk, 92 (62);
Cameron, 75 (118); and Union, 59 (27).

A Time to Plant
It might be hard to believe, with
winter still pounding at our doors,
that it's time to start preparing the
lawn and garden. But February is
an ideal time to get ready for the
upcoming growing season.
In some areas, it's not too early
to start seedlings. In just a few
weeks' time they will be ready for
planting, right about the time that
the soil and weather are both warm
enough to nourish those plants.
To get ready for spring, start
planning how you'll begin your
seasonal lawn care regime, pick
out new plants you'll want for your
garden, inventory stored bulbs and
seeds, and prep the lawn and
garden tools.
Lay out all of your hand tools
and check for damage or rust.
Clean off rust with a little steel
wool, and thinly coat the metal
parts with an all-purpose lubricant
like 3-in-1 oil or WD-40. Wooden
handles should get a fresh, thin
coating of a wood-friendly
treatment like linseed oil or butcher
block oil.
Unfold the lawnmower and other
gas- or electric-powered lawn tools
and prepare them for use. Make
sure blades and chains are in place,
check to make sure spark-plug con-
nections are clean -- maybe even
give the starting cord a good tug
(in a well-ventilated area) to make
sure starting is possible -- and
electric cords are not frayed. Don't
fill gas-powered tools with gas just
yet, but do fill a spare gas can with
the correct mixture and store away
from the house, well away from
flames and in a well-ventilated area.
Finally, make sure you have all
the lawn and garden supplies you
need to handle springtime tasks.
This includes fertilizer, extra grass
seed for bare spots, mulch and any
other items that will make outdoor
work go faster and easier.
HOME TIP: Didn't have time to
start a compost pile last fall? Don't
fret -- start composting now with a
smaller amount and lots of fresh
dirt, then add organic materials and
turn as usual.

For longtime NASCAR fans, there may be a silver lining in the
recession that is wreaking havoc with the sport.
For 20 years, accelerating exponentially over time, the main goal
of NASCAR has been similar to the main goal of churches: Spread
the Gospel. The Gospel of NASCAR. The Gospel of the France
Family. The Gospel of Dale the Elder, Dale the Younger and Dale
the Jarrett.
The main goal has been racing for those who don’t like racing.
Meanwhile, the message to those who provide the core of the
sport’s support has been, “You’ll take what we give you, and you’ll
like it.”
Don’t let the NASCAR braintrust fool you. They’re very good at
what they do, but they’ve been doing the same thing for an awfully
long time. NASCAR has been growing since the early 1970s. The
last time there were hard times, the Founder, Saint Big Bill of
France, was still alive. As the throne passed to St. Bill the Junior,
and then to St. Brian the Ambitious, no one had to worry much
about failure. The Energizer Bunny really seemed to be in charge,
and the sport kept growing ... and growing ... and growing.
As noted by many people who went to high school, Abraham
Lincoln said you could fool some of the people all of the time and all
of the people some of the time. NASCAR has been basing its
strategies on the latter. It hasn’t come to grips with Lincoln’s view
that you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.
God knows they try.
NASCAR has targeted its moves to people who don’t love cars.
That’s why, gradually, all of the cars on the track have become just
