The Torments of the Grave
The doctrine that drives thousands of Muslims to despair.

The following account represents Sunni Islams standard teachings
of after-death experiences.
As the pallbearers carry the body to the grave, its soul follows behind crying, Woe
to me! where are they taking me?

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri :
Allah's Apostle said, When the funeral is ready and the men carry it on their
shoulders, if the deceased was righteous it will say, 'Present me (hurriedly),' and if
he was not righteous, it will say, 'Woe to it (me)! Where are they taking it (me)?' Its
voice is heard by everything except man and if he heard it he would fall
unconscious."

The grave speaks and says: "I am the house of dust; I am the house of worms."
Sunan al Tirmidhi (arabic) # 2460

Translation:
The grave speaks and says: I am the house of strangeness; I am the house of
loneliness; I am the house of dust; I am the house of worms.

Then, the soul returns to the corpse while it is interred.

Musnad Ahmad (arabic) # 18063

Translation:
Then, his soul is returned back to his body...

Physical Sensations!
After being laid to rest by the gravediggers, the dead hear the gravediggers as
they walk away.

Narrated Anas:
The Prophet said, "When a human being is laid in his grave and his companions
return and he even hears their foot steps, two angels come to him and make him sit
and ask him..

Then two angels sit him up and ask him: Who is your lord, what is your religion,
who is your prophet?

Translation:
Two angels come to him, sit him up and say to him who is your lord? he answers uh,
uh.. I don't know. They say what is your religion? he answers uh, uh.. I don't know.
They say who is this man that has been sent unto you? he answers uh, uh.. I don't
know.

While these questions appear deceptively easy to answer, and thus even the most
nominal Muslim should be able to pass this ghoulish inquisition unscathed, the
reason Muslims fear failing the test may be associated with Islams infamous
fatalism: "Allah does what He pleases." Qur'an 14:27

Qur'an 14:27
Allah confirms those who believe with the sure word in this world's life and in the
hereafter, and Allah causes the unjust to go astray, and Allah does what He pleases.
Muslim scholars have interpreted this verse as revolving around the angels interrogation
and the ability of the dead or rather, Allahs desire for them to answer right or
wrong. If he answers Allah, Islam, and Muhammad, respectively, he is granted paradise.
If not, the torments begin.

First, his body will be pulverized with a "massive iron hammer"

This hammer is such that "if a mountain was struck by it, the mountain would
crumble into dust."
The dead is struck such a blow that he crumbles into dust. But Allah reassembles him.
Abi Dawud (arabic) # 4753

Dawud :: Book 40 : Hadith 4735
Narrated Al-Bara' ibn Azib:
One who is blind and dumb will then be placed in charge of him, having a sledgehammer such that if a mountain were struck with it, it would become dust. He will
give him a blow with it which will be heard by everything between the east and the
west except by men and jinn, and he will become dust. Then his spirit will be
restored to him.

Next, the grave is said to "tighten" around the corpse, till its bones pop and crack.
Abi Dawud (arabic) # 4753

.. and his grave will be compressed, so that his ribs will be crushed together.

Then comes the turn of the Tomb-Snake

known as al-shaja' al-aqra' (roughly translated as the bald brave one)
Designed by Allah to torment the dead, this snake "eats his (the dead's) flesh, from head
to toe; then his flesh returns, and it (the snake) eats his flesh from toe to head, and so on."
Al-Musannaf (arabic) v.8 # 15 - 15 # 8.

Translation:
I heard Aisha say: The bald brave one is sent to the infidel in his grave. It eats his
flesh, from head to feet; then his flesh returns, and it eats his flesh from feet to
head, and so on.

Seventy Dragons will maul and mull upon him.
If one of them were to blow upon the earth, the earth would fail and wither away.

Translation:
Muhammad said: Allah shall set upon him 70 dragons, such that if one of them were
to blow upon the earth, the earth would fail and wither away. They will rend and
tear, maul and mull upon him until the day of reckoning.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:
The Prophet once passed by two graves and said, "These two persons are being
tortured not for a major sin (to avoid). One of them never saved himself from being
soiled with his urine, while the other used to go about with calumnies(to make
enmity between friends)."

3 ways to evade the Torments of the Grave:
1- To die on Friday.

Translation:
Muslims who happen to die on Friday or on Friday eve are exonerated, by Allah,
from the fitna (torments) of the grave.
Why? because Muhammad said so.

2- To die from stomach aches.

Translation:
Muhammad said: He who dies from stomach aches will not be tormented in his
grave.
Why? because a seventh century bedouin said so.

3- To die as a martyr.
Qur'an 9:111 -111

Qur'an 9:111
Verily, Allh has purchased of the believers their lives and their properties; for the
price that theirs shall be the Paradise. They fight in Allh's Cause, so they kill
(others) and are killed.

Translation:
Muhammad said: The martyr.. sees his throne in paradise and will not know the
torments of the grave.
Why? Don't ask!
Qur'an 5:101 -101

Qur'an 5:101
O you who believe! Ask not about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you
trouble.
Believe it or Else...
