2. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW: Brown liquid. Manganese compounds can cause central nervous system and pulmonary system damage by inhalation of fumes and dust. Causes skin and eye irritation. May be harmful if swallowed. Causes eye irritation. Symptoms may include stinging, tearing, and redness. Causes skin irritation. Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis. Manganese compounds can cause central nervous system damage by inhalation of fumes and dust. Central nervous system effects may include drowsiness and perioral numbness. Respiratory effects may include "metal fume fever" and pleuritis. Chronic exposure may cause Parkinson-like symptoms (such as muscle weakness, tremor, slurred speech, and gait disturbances). May cause psychiatric symptoms such as nervousness and irritability. May be harmful if swallowed. Aspiration of this material can cause chemical pneumonia.

4. FIRST AID MEASURES

EYES: Flush immediately with large amounts of water and continue flushing for 15 minutes or until irritation subsides, whichever is longer. If irritation persists, seek medical attention. SKIN: Immediately wash thoroughly with water and mild soap or detergent. If skin irritation persists, seek medical attention. INHALATION: Move the exposed person to fresh air at once. If indicated, a qualified pre-hospital medical provider (such as a first responder or EMT) may give oxygen. Contact a physician. INGESTION: Aspiration hazard. Do not induce vomiting or give anything by mouth because this material can enter the lungs and cause severe lung damage. If the victim is drowsy or unconscious, place on left side with head down. If possible, do not leave victim unattended. Seek immediate medical attention. MEDICAL CONDITIONS AGGRAVATED: Conditions aggravated by exposure may include skin disorders and respiratory (asthma-like) disorders. NOTE TO PHYSICIAN: Manganese toxicity following acute ingestion is rare due to poor gastrointestinal absorption. Acute inhalation of high concentrations may result in respiratory symptoms consistent with chemical pneumonitis. Chronic exposure generally requires at least six months for symptoms to develop. Chelation therapy for manganese toxicity may enhance urinary excretion and mobilization of manganese in the blood, but its effectiveness in improving neurological signs and symptoms has not been clearly demonstrated. Levodopa therapy may result in improvement of neurological toxicity.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

FLASH POINT ( F) 230, PMCC OSHA FLAMMABILITY CLASSIFICATION: Combustible Liquid-Class III B EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Carbon dioxide, dry chemicals, foam. SPECIAL FIREFIGHTING PROCEDURES: Water may be ineffective but can be used to cool containers exposed to heat or flame. Caution should be exercised when using water or foam as frothing may occur, especially if sprayed into containers of hot, burning liquid. EXPLOSION LIMITS IN AIR - LOWER (%) Unknown EXPLOSION LIMITS IN AIR - UPPER (%) Unknown AUTOIGNITION TEMP ( F) Unknown UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS: None known.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

ACTION TO BE TAKEN IF MATERIAL IS RELEASED OR SPILLED: Contain spill immediately. Do not allow spill to enter sewers or watercourses. Remove all sources of ignition. Provide adequate ventilation during clean-up. Absorb with solvent absorbent material. Large spills may be picked up using vacuum pumps, shovels, buckets, or other means and placed in drums or other suitable containers. Dispose according to federal, state and local regulations.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

HANDLING: Keep container closed when not in use. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Avoid breathing vapor. Wash thoroughly after handling. Use only with adequate ventilation. STORAGE: Store in a cool, well ventilated area in closed containers away from heat, sparks, open flame or oxidizing materials.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION

ENGINEERING CONTROLS: Local exhaust recommended when generating excessive levels of vapors when heating product. Use explosion-proof equipment if high vapor concentrations and heat environments coexist. RESPIRATORY PROTECTION EQUIPMENT: Use NIOSH approved respiratory protection where airborne level exceeds appropriate occupational exposure limit. PROTECTIVE GLOVES: For operations where prolonged or repeated contact of product with skin can occur, wear impermeable gloves. For heated product use any type impermeable rubber thermal insulating gloves. EYE AND FACE PROTECTION: For operations where eye or face contact can occur, wear splash proof goggles or face shield. OTHER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Launder soiled clothes. Properly dispose of contaminated leather articles including shoes, which cannot be decontaminated. For prolonged or repeated exposures, use impervious clothing (boots, aprons, etc.) over parts of body subject to exposure. VENTILATION: If vapor or mist is generated when the material is heated or handled, adequate ventilation in accordance with good engineering practice must be provided to maintain concentrations below the specified exposure or flammable limits.
