Text Notes

THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS Q UESTIONED MATTHEW 21: 23 When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority? 24 Jesus said to them, I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin? And they argued with one another, If we say, From heaven, he will say to us, Why then did you not believe him? 26 But if we say, Of human origin, we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet. 27 So they answered Jesus, We do not know. And he said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

JESUS A UTHORITY MATTHEW 28: 16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

JESUS A UTHORITY QUESTIONED MARK 11: 23 [Jesus said,] Truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, Be taken up and thrown into the sea, and if you do not doubt in your heart, but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you. 24 So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25 Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. 26 27 Again they came to Jerusalem. As he was walking in the temple, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to him 28 and said, By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority to do them? 29 Jesus said to them, I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin? Answer me. 31 They argued with one another, If we say, From heaven, he will say, Why then did you

not believe him? 32 But shall we say, Of human origin? -- they were afraid of the crowd, for all regarded John as truly a prophet. 33 So they answered Jesus, We do not know. And Jesus said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

JESUS A UTHORITY MARK 16: 14 Later he appeared to the eleven themselves as they were sitting at the table; and he upbraided them for their lack of faith and stubbornness, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. 15 And he said to them, Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. 16 The one who believes and is baptized will be saved; but the one who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: by using my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in ne w tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes in their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover. 19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heave n and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and proclaimed the good news everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that accompanied it.

JESUS A UTHORITY QUESTIONED LUKE 5: 17 One day, while he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting near by (they had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem); and the power of the Lord was with him to heal. 18 Just then some men came, carrying a paralyzed man on a bed. They were trying to bring him in and lay him before Jesus; 19 but finding no way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the middle of the crowd in front of Jesus. 20 When he saw their faith, he said, Friend, your sins are forgiven you. 21 Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, Who is this who is speaking blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone? 22 When Jesus perceived their questionings, he answered them, Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, Your sins are forgiven you, or to say, Stand up and walk ? 24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins -- he said to the one who was paralyzed I say to you, stand up and take your bed and go to your home. 25 Immediately he stood up before them, took what he had been lying on, and went to his home, glorifying God.
