The External Fibre Optic Splicing Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive procedure outlining the safety steps for the splicing/joining of fibre optic cabling. This Work Method Statement (WMS) is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details, ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand. It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall WHS System. It provides guidance on Fibre Optic cable splicing/ joining. This SWMS covers the planning and preparation of the activity and operation involved with repairing, splicing or building a new joint in fibre optic cabling adjacent to roads and, subsequent placement in a pit or manhole. This SWMS does not cover work carried out near or in a Confined Space. A dedicated SWMS addressing these items must be put in place if applicable and used in conjunction with this SWMS. Ensure : If known confined space pit, utilise atmospheric testing prior to opening or entering. Ensure atmosphere in trench is monitored for contaminants as required. (Examples: Acidic gas, Carbon Monoxide, or flammable atmosphere). If pit contains water Use manhole/pit guard or other visual aid to exclude or warn pedestrians of open pit Do not leave pit unattended (always replace lid/cover before leaving) Gloves are worn Use correct lifting technique to remove lid Use lifting/access tool if possible (avoid using fingers under heavy lids) Be aware of dangerous animals (snakes, spiders etc.) Be aware of other services. Determine if space would be considered confined space Do not enter confined space without confined space permit (ensure dedicated SWMS in place for confined space entry) Do not work near potential confined space alone.
