Nature By H.D Carberry We have neither Summer nor Winter Neither Autumn nor Spring.

We have instead the days When the gold sun shines on the lush green canefieldsMagnificently. The days when the rain beats like bullet on the roofs And there is no sound but thee swish of water in the gullies And trees struggling in the high Jamaica winds. Also there are the days when leaves fade from off guango trees And the reaped canefields lie bare and fallow to the sun. But best of all there are the days when the mango and the logwood blossom When bushes are full of the sound of bees and the scent of honey, When the tall grass sways and shivers to the slightest breath of air, When the buttercups have paved the earth with yellow stars And beauty comes suddenly and the rains have gone.

The River By Valerie Bloom

The rivers a wanderer, A nomad, a tramp, He doesn't choose any one place To set up his camp.

The rivers a winder, Through valley and hill, He twists and he turns, he just cannot be still.

The rivers a hoarder And he buries down deep Those little treasures That he wants to keep.

The rivers a baby, He gurgles and hums And sounds like hes happily Sucking his thumbs.

The rivers a singer, As he dances along The countryside echoes the notes of his song.

The rivers a monster, Hungry and vexed Hes gobbled up trees and hell swallow you next

Personal Response for poem The River The River is a poem in which poet express her appreciation and perception of a river. In her poem, river is perceived as a living thing where in each stanza, poet does mention about the rivers character as reflection from humans character with some attitude and wants. For example, The rivers a baby, he gurgles and hums And sounds like hes happily sucking his thumbs. In addition to that, poet also illustrated river as a living thing with two natures which is good and evil. Good nature is elaborated as the river has a sense of making people happy as well as provides a numerous benefits to its surrounding. However, evil nature is perceived as the river can also cause destruction to its surrounding especially when there is a change of season occurred. This poem also was presented in a very poetic style in which there is a rhyming included in every each of second and forth stanza. Rhyme can be understood as the repetition of the end-sounds of words for example the sound of hilland still as written in the second stanza, line two and four. In short the rhyme used in this poem can be formulated as a,b,c,b rhyme. Beside of that, the language used is quite easy to be understood by the reader. As we can see, even this poem use a lot of metaphor, but the descriptions that goes along the poem are easy to understand. Let us take a look on it meaning thoroughly. In the first stanza, poet describes the river as a wanderer and nomad because rivers flow is unstoppable. It goes on and did not stay still and it is similar to what is written in the second stanza. Here, rivers is illustrate as winder as it always twists and turns when it flows through valley and hill. In a third stanza, rivers is perceived as a hoarder which keep all things that pass through it in the riverbed. In addition, for the forth

stanza the river itself is illustrated as a baby, who gurgles, hums and happily sucking his thumb, hence interpret the meaning of it as the river happily flowing along. In addition to that, the sound of river is also has been added up in the fifth stanza of this poem where river is called as singer and dancer as it bring cheerfulness to those who listen to it. Meanwhile, the river also illustrated as an evil thing in the last stanza. In this stanza, poet mention about rivers evil side as a monster. This is because at certain time rivers flow tends to change into something dangerous and will cause destruction as well as can cause death to living things. As a conclusion, this poem is an art that illustrated non living things into a character possess by living things in a beautiful way. As we know, every creation comes with its benefit and detriment. It goes same with river. River does give a numerous benefits to others, but at the same time it also can cause destruction to them.

Learning Experience. Understanding poem is not an easy task for me, as the component of the poem itself is full with symbolic and poetics words that take thorough concentration in reading it. At first, I try to understand these poems by just reading it. There are some parts that can be understood easily, but most of the parts require further additional explanation to be understood. Thus, I make a decision to browse the internet to see the technical meaning of the poem. Throughout the review, I found out that there are a lot of matters discussed and assessed when dealing with poem. For example, the poems theme, poetic devices used and also style in presenting it. In addition, by doing this task, I was able to know new vocabulary that was presented in the poem and for me it is an advantage. However, preparing personal response is quite a tough task for me. In order to prepare it, I need to get a better understanding on it first. Thus, now I can conclude that understanding and interpreting poem is not a simple work and Im sure that preparing it will require a tough effort.
