2. Augustus Hahn-2(John Hahn-1) was born on 15 Jan 1825 in Hanover, Germany[1, 2, 3]. He died on 04
May 1908 in Deerfield, NY[4]. He married Anna (Hannah) Grub Hahn on 1851 in St. Paul's Church,
Fort Plain, NY[5, 6]. She was born on 1828 in Hanover, Germany. She died on 05 Dec 1874 in
Deerfield, NY[7]. He married Caroline Ketchener (Kirchner) Bauer Hahn on 1888 in Utica, NY. She
was born on 01 Dec 1832 in Prussia, Germany[1, 8]. She died on 10 Oct 1902 in 223 Mohawk Street,
Utica, NY[1]. He married Maria Menning (Minung) Hahn on 06 Sep 1878 in Utica, NY. She was born
on 1824 in Wurtemberg, Germany. She died on 1884.

The 1850 Census showed August and Anna living in The Town of Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY.
The name was spelled Hone and Anna was Hannah.
The 1860 Deerfield Census says he and his wife were born in Hannover, Germany and name was
spelled Hann. The 1870 Utica Census spelled his name Auguste Hahn and said he was born in
Prussia.
Augustus served in Company F of the 146th NY Infantry Volunteers in the Civil War . Taken from
cemetery notes Oneida Co. Historical Society. The 1869 County directory states Augustus Hahn
was a stone mason. Taken from the 146th NY Infantry Book - Augustus Hahn, age 36 years.
Enlisted August 29, 1862 at Deerfield to serve 3 years under the command of Capt. Peter
Claesgens. Mustered in as a private Co. F. Oct. 10, 1862. Captured in action 5/5/l864 at the
Wilderness, VA. He spent ten months in Andersonville Prison in the state of Georgia. At the end of
the war he was paroled. He was released May 1, 1865; mustered out with company July 16, 1865
near Washington, D.C. His personal description was five feet five and a half inches tall, dark
complexion and dark hair, eyes brown. He had been wounded while in the service of his country
and for some years received a pension. He died 8/4/1908 in Utica, NY.
Returning from the war he settled in Deerfield and lived there until 1884 at which time he moved to
Mohawk Street in Utica. He learned the trade of plasterer in Germany and went into the German
military service. In 1848 he escaped from Germany and came to America settling in Utica. He
worked at his trade here and also as a stone mason. He worked for himself most of the time. He
was a member of the German Rifle Co., Post John F. McQuade, G.A.R. In 1883 August sold
property to George Bowman and his wife in the amount of $450. The property was listed on
Hamilton Street, Utica, NY (40' frontage and 100' deep.) Obituary said he came to America in
1848.
The naturalization record I found on Augustus Hahn showed a Declaration of Intent on Oct 1,
1852 with the Naturalization being Oct 25, 1854.
Augustus died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Eisenhuth in Deerfield, NY. His death
certificate said he died of old age with general breaking down.

Rosanna lived in Utica all her life. She was a member of St. Paul's
Lutheran Church. One daughter married George E. Joslin and lived in
Rochester in 1939. The other daughter who was listed as a step daughter
to Fred Schimmel married Frank Philo and lived in Indian Lake in 1939.
She had four grandchildren at the time of her death.

15 Sep 1892 in 150 Schuyler St. Utica, NY[10]. She married George Bowman on Abt. 1878 in Utica,
NY ??, son of John Baumann Sr. and Martha (Martina Kohlhammer) Baumann. He was born on 16
Nov 1856 in Utica, NY[9, 16, 17]. He died on 30 Jan 1898 in Jersey City, NJ[4].

Newspaper article: A man found dead in a highway ditch between Nelliston and
St. Johnsville this morning was believed to be Edward Bowman of Jersey City, NJ.
Two of his brothers live in Utica.
Believed to have been struck by a car operated by a hit and run driver while hitch-
hiking to Utica to visit his brother Walter J. Bowman. Victim 58 years old had a cut
on his head and bruises on his arms and hands. His clothes were torn and his
false teeth were found lying near the body. Edward, who had been a frequent
visitor to Utica, had sent his traveling bag to Utica after writing his brother that he
would pay him a visit. The American Railway Express receipt for the bag was found
in the man's pocket and this, with the fact that the man had false teeth and had
planned to visit Utica, let Utica relatives to believe that he was Edward Bowman. He
had been unemployed for several years. Relatives expected to view the body during
the day to make certain about the identification. The body was discovered at 8:15
a.m. by Francis O'Brien, St. Johnsville, driver of an oil truck. He stopped and
investigated when he saw a hat lying on the shoulder of the highway. The body lay
in a pool of water in the ditch. O'Brien notified Sheriff Gerald Nellis, Fonda, who
began an investigation. A piece of some sort of vehicle was found nearby and this
with injuries suffered by the man led the authorities to believe that he was a victim of
a hit and run driver. Coroner Clark Congdon of Fort Plain was notified and he
ordered the body removed in the Graves funeral parlors in Fort Plain for an autopsy.
Besides the brother mentions, Mr. Bowman is survived by three other brothers,
George Bowman, Utica, Thomas, Jersey City, Noble, Albany. Also a sister Viola,
Jersey City. His body was interred November 1, 1938 in Utica, NY, New Forest
Cemetery.

A baptismal record was found in St. Patrick's Church Records, Jersey City, NJ
saying that the sponsors for him was Annie Clark and the priest was Rev. J.A.
Sheehan. He was baptized Joseph George. The 1900 Jersey City, New Jersey
census placed George living with his stepmother in Jersey City. He was listed as
Joseph and was born in New Jersey. The 1910 Censes showed George living

with this brother, Walter, in Utica, NY and said he was born in New York. In the
1920 and 1930 Census, he was married and living with his in-laws in Utica. Said he
was born in New York.
Obituary:
George F. Bowman, 65, of 226 North Genesee Street died unexpectedly in his
home, Jan. 8, 1957, a week after he retired from the Bossert Division of the
Rockwell Spring & Axle Co. Dr. Preston Clark, corner, said death was due to
heart attack. Bowman was born in Utica,
December 18, 1891, a son of the late George and Rose Hahn Bowman. On Sept.
16, 1916, he married Etta Sifer in St. Joseph's Church. He was a member of St.
Peter's Church. For the past 23 years he had been employed at the Bossert
Division, retiring Jan. 1, 1957. Besides his wife he leaves a son, G. Marvin
Bowman; a daughter, Mrs. Gordon Emery, Sauquoit; a brother Thomas, Jersey
City, NJ; a sister Mrs. Violet Valet, Albany; four grandchildren and several nieces
and nephews. The funeral will be held Friday morning from the Langdon Funeral
Chapel, 630 Varick St., and from St. Peter's Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's
Cemetery.
