Use the absolute volume method to compute mix proportions for 1 m3 for the given conditions and specifications; - Concrete is required for a foundation in Dammam 1.5km from coast. - design compressive strength, f'c = 25 MPa at 28 days (No reliable data on previous mixes is available). - No air entrainment. - Slump should be in the range 75 25 mm. - The available materials are as follows: Cement Coarse Aggregate (Crushed Stone) Fine Aggregate (Natural Sand) Type I, specific gravity = 3.15 Nominal maximum size of aggregate = 20mm, Oven dry specific gravity = 2.68, Dry rodded unit weight = 1600 kg/m3, Total moisture content = 2% absorption capacity = 0.5%. Fineness Modulus = 2.8, Oven dry specific gravity = 2.64, Total moisture content = 1%' Absorption capacity = 1.8%.

Strength: Design strength, f'c = 25 MPa For corrosion protection for reinforced concrete exposed to sea water f'cr = 35 MPa f'cr = 25 + 8.5 = 33.5 MPa Use f'cr = 35 MPa Water Cement Ration: For corrosion protection for reinforced concrete exposed to sea water W/C = 0.4 f'cr = 35 MPa Use W/C = 0.4 Air content: For 20 mm aggregate and non air entrained concrete = 2% Use air content = 2%.
