Upgrade Overview
The Meridien II board set consists of the digital media board and the attached daughter board. The Meridien II board set takes up one PCI slot and is located in either the Avid PCI Extender, if you are using a Macintosh operating system, or the IBM IntelliStation, if you are using a Windows NT operating system. Depending upon the operating system you are using, do one of the following: If using a Macintosh operating system, go to Replacing the Meridien II Board Set in an Avid PCI Extender on page 4. If using a Windows NT operating system, go to Replacing the Meridien II Board Set in an IBM IntelliStation on page 16.
This document does not provide software installation instructions. You should read the release notes that ship with the upgrade kit to see if you need to install new software.
The following sections explain how to replace the Meridien II board set in the Avid PCI Extender. You should perform the replacement procedure in the following order: 1. Remove the top cover. 2. Remove the fan assembly. 3. Locate the Meridien II board set. 4. Remove the Meridien II and 3D effects board sets. 5. Replace the Meridien II daughter board. 6. Disconnect the Meridien II and 3D effects board sets. 7. Connect the Meridien III and 3D effects board sets. 8. Replace the fan assembly and top cover.

The second method is to gently rock the board sets up and down until the over-the-top connector is loose, and then remove it.
You should now place the 3D effects board set on a static-free location and continue to the next section that explains how to replace the daughter board on the digital media board. Removing the Old Daughter Board You now need to remove the old daughter board from the digital media board and replace it with the new Meridien III daughter board. You will need a plastic pen or some other nonconducting instrument with a blunt end. To remove the old daughter board from the digital media board: 1. Place the board set on an antistatic bag on your lap, with the daughter board facing down (see Figure 7).
Figure 7
2. Place your finger between the two boards next to a plastic standoff (see Figure 7). Using the blunt end of the pen (not the writing point of the pen), cover the plastic standoff and carefully push down. Do this for all five plastic standoffs, until you feel each connection loosen.
11
3. Turn the board over. Using the ejector handles on the digital media board, release the two cables that connect the daughter board to the digital media board (see Figure 8).

2. Position the Meridien III daughter board over the top of the digital media board with the plastic standoffs facing down. 3. Line up the one connector on each board that is used (see Figure 9) and the five plastic standoffs. 4. Press the connector on each board together and squeeze the five plastic standoffs until you feel them click into place.
Take care to align the cables to the connector in the following step. You can damage the pins if not centered properly. 5. Carefully center the cables of the Meridien III daughter board over the cable connectors on the digital media board (see Figure 8) and squeeze them until they are properly seated. 6. Check to make sure the connector between the boards is still properly connected (it sometimes come loose).
13
Connecting the Meridien III and 3D Effects Board Sets Once you have the Meridien III daughter board firmly attached to the digital media board, you need to connect the Meridien III board set to the 3D effects board set. It is easier to place the 3D effects board set and the Meridien III board set into the PCI slot separately, and then attach the over-the-top connector. To connect the two board sets: 1. Carefully place the 3D effects board set into slot 8 of the PCI (see Figure 4). 2. Carefully place the Meridien III board set into slot 7 of the PCI (see Figure 4). 3. Carefully position the over-the-top connector over the two board sets as shown in Figure 6. Gently, but firmly, press the connector until it is properly seated.
You might have to jiggle the board sets slightly to get the over-the-top connector to line up properly. 4. Connect the external cable between the Meridien III board set and the Meridien I/O box. Connect the cable to the M connector of the Meridien III board set. 5. Connect the cable from the display controller board to the Meridien III board set (see Figure 9). 6. Use the two screws you saved when you removed the board sets to connect the board sets to the connector strip at the rear of the system.
