PRESENTACIN
INTRODUCTION
UN PAS EN SUS IMGENES El vigor de la cinematografa colombiana se refleja en la diversidad de sus pelculas. Tanto en el largometraje como en el cortometraje y el documental, el cine colombiano reflexiona sobre la historia del pas, representado en sus imgenes. Las nuevas tecnologas han sido aprovechadas por una nueva generacin de realizadores para filmar la realidad y las fantasas que definen la vida en este rincn de Latinoamrica. A travs de la cmara, el cine muestra la diversidad de las regiones con sus matices culturales, ofreciendo un panorama contrastante entre el Caribe colombiano, la regin andina o la costa Pacfica. Gracias al inters del Estado por la produccin cinematogrfica, a travs del Ministerio de Cultura, al apoyo de Proimagenes Colombia, al Consejo Nacional de las Artes y la Cultura en Cinematografa-CNACC que ha otorgado los premios del Fondo para el Desarrollo Cinematogrfico, al intercambio en distintos festivales con productores y distribuidores, a la participacin en talleres alrededor del mundo para realizadores, el oficio del cine se ha profesionalizado cada vez ms en Colombia. Para demostrarlo, el repertorio que ofrece este catlogo sirve de aproximacin a la forma como se presenta en una pantalla de cine una geografa y quienes la habitan. As, que empiece la pelcula y buena proyeccin!
THE IMAGE OF A COUNTRY Colombian cinema is a lively art. Its features, short films, and documentaries are diverse. Its images and reflections have permanently recreated our history. New technologies as creative tools for a new generation of filmmakers have enhanced the visual and narrative possibilities of artists to deal with fantasy and reality in this corner of Latin America. The camera is an eye looking at cultures as different as those of the Caribbean, the Andean, or the Pacific regions of the country. Thanks to the interest of the Colombian government in promoting film production, the Ministry of Culture, the support of Proimagenes Colombia, the Consejo Nacional de las Artes y la Cultura en Cinematografa-CNACC that have granted the awards trough the Fondo para el Desarrollo Cinematogrfico, to workshops and cultural exchanges in festivals around the world with producers and distributors, the professional status of filmmakers in the country has been steadily improving. This catalogue clearly demonstrates the direction of Colombian cinema today, and how the films show a landscape and its people in images. So, showtime and good projection!

HEALING WOUNDS
Colombian jails are full of guerrillas, soldiers, paramilitaries and even farmers locked away for crimes committed in a war that has devastated the entire country. In this context, director Roberto Flores decides to screen his film Heridas (Wounds) at reclusion centers in the city of Barranquilla. The films central axis is the conflict in Colombia and the screening becomes a pretext for inmates to reveal their stories and tell us how they survived a war that has scarred their bodies and left open wounds in their souls.

Un camargrafo graba los pormenores de una fiesta en un club social de la ciudad de Cartagena (Colombia). A cameraman tapes the happenings at a party in a social club in the city of Cartagena (Colombia). Captured by his lens, the stories that unfold among the guests, waiters, and musicians, reveal the silent currents that distinguish them and set them apart, in a setting that synthesizes the social landscape of the city and its racial hierarchies. Based on testimonies of racial discrimination in Cartagena studied by the Texcultura research group.

Las crceles colombianas estn llenas de guerrilleros, militares, paramilitarese incluso campesinos encerrados por los crmenes de una guerra que sufre todo el pas. En este contexto, el director de cine Roberto Flores decide presentar su pelcula Cerrando heridas en los centros de reclusin de Barranquilla. Esta es una pelcula que tiene como tema central el conflicto colombiano. La proyeccin se convierte en una excusa para que los reclusos nos revelen sus historias y nos cuenten cmo sobrevivieron a esta guerra, que ha dejado cicatrices en sus cuerpos y heridas abiertas en sus almas.

Alex y Jonathan trabajan en el taller de Alfonso. Animados por Alex, deciden robar a unos contrabandistas entre los que est Vctor, hermano de Alex, parentesco que los dos amigos desconocen. La rivalidad fraternal y los oscuros caminos a recorrer para ingresar en el mundo del hampa, son los temas de fondo de este trabajo. Alex and Jonathan are working in Alfonsos workshop. Encouraged by Alex, they decide to rob some smugglers, ignoring that one of them is Alexs brother, Victor. Sibling rivalry and the dark roads that must be travelled to enter the criminal underworld, are the main topics of this interesting creation.

La historia transcurre en el departamento de la Guajira donde, paradjicamente, se inicia el documental con la trgica desaparicin del protagonista mientras graba una pelcula sobre los indgenas de la regin. Este hecho propicia el encuentro, veinte aos despus, de dos culturas ancestralmente distantes (la wayu y la francesa) para realizar el segundo funeral de Claude Herviant. Es entonces cuando se hace evidente la importancia que tiene este ritual para la etnia wayu, con la mstica que rodea su entorno. A filmmaker disappears while filming a documentary about the natives of the Guajira region in Colombia. Twenty years later, two different cultures, the Wayu and the French, convene for a second funeral for Claude Herviant, recognizing the importance that the ritual has for the Wayu people and the mysticism that surrounds it.

Their tunes, in the end, have become a rebellious scream that rises in the search of a dreamed freedom.

Un da, el letrero Magnolia hace que la mujer decida entrar a la casa y, con ella, la luz que Rafael dej de ver hace mucho tiempo. Rafael, a lonely old man, has been living in the darkness of his house for a long time. Every day, he writes womens names on pieces of paper and puts them on his window trying to catch the attention of an old homeless woman that always passes in front of his home. Orfa, una solitaria anciana, recibe un da un paquete de correo que contiene una carta y un telfono celular, enviados por su nico hijo, a quien no ve hace mucho tiempo. En la carta, el hijo le cuenta que no podr visitarla y que ella tendr que subsistir vendiendo minutos de tiempo. Pablo, un adolescente proveniente de la burguesa bogotana, es atracado por Leo, un joven de origen desfavorecido apenas ms viejo que l. En Cali, al igual que en muchas ciudades de Colombia, casi todo el mundo tiene en el lbum familiar una foto en blanco y negro de un transente que pasea elegantemente por la ciudad. Este tipo de fotografas es conocido como foto-cine. Son fotos antiguas, tomadas con cmaras analgicas, que usaban soportes qumicos para la imagen; rollos de pelcula fotosensible de 35 mm. que necesitaba ser expuesta, revelada, fijada y copiada para que apareciera la imagen. Fotos de las que ya no existen; imgenes que poco a poco desaparecen de nuestro lbum y de nuestra memoria. 384 instantneas es as un documental/ensayo que habla de las relaciones entre imagen, memoria y ciudad. Una pelcula que refresca la memoria de una ciudad que se est olvidando de su pasado. Historias ntimas y colectivas de quienes quedaron detenidos por una instantnea que fue tomada mientras paseaban por la ciudad. Un paseo por el Puente Ortiz, vestigio de la modernidad de Cali.

In Cali, as in many other cities in Colombia, almost everybody has an old black and white photograph of a passerby who walks elegantly through the streets of the city. These oldfashioned photographs, known as Photo-Cine, were taken with analogue cameras, which used chemical bases to get the image and photo-sensitive 35mm film that needed to be exposed, developed, fixed, and copied to obtain the picture. These are the kind of photographs that can no longer be found; images that have been gradually disappearing from our personal albums and from our memories. 384 Snapshots is a kind of essay documentary that talks about the relationship between image, memory and city. It is a visual document that refreshes the memory of a city that is slowly forgetting its past. Minimalistic stories, both intimate and collective, of those who were captured by a snapshot that was taken while they walked through the city. A walk through the Puente Ortiz, vestige of Calis modernity.

On April 9, 1948the day that the conflict between the Blues (conservatives) and Reds (liberals) reached the limits of hatred in Colombiaa family lives its own war. Ramiro, a man devoted to the Blue Party, has to think how to get out of his store and avoid the fury of the Reds after the assassination of their leader, Jorge Eliecer Gaitan. While he is at risk on the street, his wife, Lucia, is at home painting and caring for her mother, Doa Rita. Completely shattered, Ramiro meets the two women, who cannot hide their sadness after they find out about Gaitans death and cry for the tragic fate of the Red leader. The tension between the principles of Blue and Red transform this house into a battlefield, where Ramiros brutal attacks will be met with a deadly vengeance that the women quietly prepare.

In the cold of night and amid the tension that prevails at home due to his grandmothers illness, Daniel has a meeting with Claudia, the woman he loves. But the cold has also crept into the relationship: she does not want to be with him and breaks his heart again. In the next room, the dying grandmothers incessant wheezing begins to invade the room, making the atmosphere yet more uncomfortable. Unaware of the seriousness of the situation, Claudia decides to leave, but Daniel, refusing to let her go, decides to go after her. When he returns, its too late. En el fro de la noche y en medio de la tensin que se vive en casa por la enfermedad de su abuela, Daniel tiene un reencuentro con la mujer que ama. Antes de cumplir con su propsito, el rumor de mar previene a Celia de sus intenciones, evitndole su trgico final. After the death of her husband, Celia is forced to raise her two sons by herself, with a fishing boat as her only inheritance. She asks her brotherin-law, Azael, to operate the boat, but is unable to find anyone else to join him in the fishing. Desperate, she decides to become a sailor, defying an old custom forbidding women to go fishing, and defying Azael, who refuses to go out with her fearing to bring misfortune to the town. When the fishermen arrive to the coast with their nets empty, they blame Celia for their curse, and their women look at her with hatred. As Celia insists on going out to fish, the women decide to take matters into their own hands. But before they can act, a sea rumor warns Celia of their intentions, and averts her tragic ending.

Custano es un rbol mayor, imponente y cordial, que vive con su familia en las riberas del ro Vatea. Hopeless, the family arrives at the closest city, weakened by their new consuming reality. Custano struggles to survive and keep his family together, but his nature acts against him, and failure becomes inevitable. He ends up sacrificing his own life for Remigio, his beloved son and inseparable companion.

Celia, despus de la muerte de su marido, debe asumir sola la crianza de sus dos hijos. Con una lancha como nica herencia, se ve en la necesidad de buscar a Azael, su cuado, para que se la maneje. Al no encontrar en el pueblo de pescadores quin acompae a Azael y urgida por el sustento de su familia, decide embarcarse como marinera. Inicialmente Azael se niega a salir con ella por temor de traer la desgracia a su pueblo, donde existe la creencia ancestral que prohbe a la mujer salir a pescar. Al llegar los pescadores con las lanchas vacas, culpan a Celia de haber salado la pesca y las mujeres resentidas la miran con odio. SALOM
Para Salom, una hermosa joven de catorce aos, el 16 de Julio era el da ms feliz del ao. Las fiestas de la Virgen del Carmen en su barrio se convertan en la ilusin de poder ver a Miguel, uno de los chicos que carga la imagen de la Virgen en la procesin. Sin embargo, este 16 de Julio es diferente. Salom celebra el primer aniversario de la muerte de su padre, quien la acompaaba cada ao a ver ese chico que le haca temblar los pies. A su regreso del cementerio, despus de ponerle flores a la tumba de su padre, los ojos de Salom y de Miguel se cruzan por primera vez, mientras ella lucha por confrontar su propio dolor y mantener viva la ilusin de una tradicin. Ser entonces que el 16 de Julio puede convertirse de nuevo en el da ms feliz del ao para Salom?
For Salom, a beautiful 14-year-old girl, the 16th of July is the happiest day of the year. This is the holiday of the virgin of El Carmen, and she looks forward to seeing Miguel, a boy from the neighborhood, carry the virgins sculpture in the procession. However, this year is different: it also marks the first anniversary of the death of her father, who would always take her to the festivities to see Miguel. On her way back from the cemetery, where she places flowers on her fathers grave, the eyes of Salom and Miguel meet. As she tries to control her own pain and honor a tradition, will this 16th of July turn out to be, once again, the happiest day of the year for Salom?
