Straight-through Cable Definition

Straight-through cable is a type of twisted pair copper wire cable for local area network (LAN) use for which the RJ-45 connectors at each end have the same pinout (i.e., arrangement of conductors). It is identical to crossover cable, except that in the latter the wires on the cable are crossed over so that the receive signal pins on the connector on one end are connected to the transmit signal pins on the connector on the other end. Straight-through cable is also commonly referred to as patch cable. However, this might be confusing in some situations because patch cable also has a broader definition that emphasizes the fact that there is a connector on each end rather than the equality (or lack thereof) of the pinouts. Straight-through cable is used to connect computers and other end-user devices (e.g., printers) to networking devices such as hubs and switches. It can also be used to directly connect like devices (e.g., two hubs or two switches) if the cable is plugged into an uplink port on one (but not both) of the devices. Crossover cable is used to connect two like devices without the use of an uplink port.

Network Infrastructure Devices - What are Bridges and Switchs?

12

A bridge is a network device that operates at the Data Link layer (Layer 2) of OSI model. There are many different types of bridges and include Transparent bridges, Encapsulation bridges, Source-route bridges. Source-route bridges are for Token Ring network. Bridges allow segmenting a Local Network into multiple segments, thus reducing the network traffic. A bridge performs the segmenting function by examining the Data Link Layer (Layer 2) data packet (Ethernet Frame) and forwarding the packet to other physical segments only if necessary. Both swiches and bridges function using Data Link Layer (Layer 2) addressing system, also known as MAC addresses. Bridge can connect only a few Networks, LANs or Hosts. A Bridge has comparatively less ports than a Switch. A Switch has usually 24 ports or 48 ports. Brides and Switches are considered to operate at Data Link Layer (Layer 2) of OSI model. The following picture shows a 24 port, 10/100, Cisco 2950 Catalist Switch.

How to connect two computers :

How to connect two computers in Windows XP. This will let you share files and folders, printers, play network games, etc...

Steps :
1. onnect the two computers together either with a Crossover cable or a Hub/Switch to the ethernet card in your computer. 2. Set the IP address on both computers. Goto Start > Control Panel > Network Connections (choose switch to classic view if you cannot see network connections) 3. Look for your Local Area Connection ethernet adapter, right-click and choose properties. 4. Select Internet Protocol TCP/IP and choose properties.

Setup the IP as 192.168.1.1 and the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0on the first computer and 192.168.1.2 on the second with the same subnet mask.

Tips :

5. Choose OK then OK/close again. 1. To share your files, right click on any folder and choose Sharing to make them shared. 2. You can also do this with your printers to be able to print from one computer while the printer is connected to the other.

Things You'll Need :

1. A Crossover cable. This a Cat5 Ethernet Cable that the wires have been switched around to allow two computer only to talk to each other. 2. OR, you can purchase a switch/hub with two Standard "Straight-Through" Ethernet Cables. 3. Check to see if your computer has an Ethernet Adapter in the back of the computer. Most new computers have this. You can tell by the documentation from the computer or by looking at the back of the computer. It looks like a phone jack, but larger.

A network switch is a device that manages the sharing of multiple computers or networks on the same data connection. Another name for a network switch is a network bridge, which is a physical device responsible for routing and processing data within the open systems interconnection model. A network switch does not include hubs or repeaters, as these devices do not include any type of logical processors. A network switch can support 10/100 Mbit/s (Megabits per second) or 10/100/1000 Mbit/s port transfer rates. It is possible to have multiple network switches operating at different speeds on the same network. However, this type of setup lends itself to bottlenecks and restricts the possible routes available for the flow of data. A network switch is absolutely critical in the management of a computer network. The networkswitch functions as the traffic management system within the network, directing data packets to the correct destination. These devices are used to connect peripheral devices to the network and ensure maximum cost effectiveness and the ability to share resources. A typical setup of a network switch is two computers, one printer, and a wireless router. All the devices are connected to the network switch, and each item must be clearly identified and connection rules created.

Once the setup is done, any computer on the network, can use the same printer. All computers can transfer files to each other and anyone with a wireless card can access the network, print and transfer files. The network switch is designed to allow the resources to be shared without reducing performance. A simple analogy for a network switch is a policeman at a four-way stop. The cars are the data packets that are sent from each device as it attempts to communicate with the other devices in the network. The policeman, or network switch, directs traffic, sending the data to the right location, without having any collisions. There are four main types of network switches. The four types are unmanaged switches, managed switches, smart switches, and enterprise managed switches. Each different types has its own strengths and weaknesses that need to be considered. An unmanaged switch is the cheapest option and is typically used in a small office or business. These network switches perform the basic functions of managing the data flow between a shared printer and multiple computers. They can either be desktop models or rack mounted. A managed switch has a user interface or software offering that allows users to modify the settings of the switch. There are multiple methods for updating the network switch, ranging from a serial console to an Internet based application. This type of network switch requires a knowledgeable user to adjust the settings as needed. A smart switch is the middle product offering between a unmanaged and managed switch. The user interface is web-based and set with the most popular default settings. Adjustments to one setting result in an automatic adjustment to the related setting. An enterprise-managed network switch has a wide range of adjustable settings to allow use within a large company or organization. These types of network switches are usually managed by network specialists and are constantly monitored, due to the size and complexity of the network.
