Salve Football Tackles the Fall Season October 8, 2009 This 2009 fall season the Salve Regina

University Football Team will stagger the scoreboards on their way to a winning season in the New England Football Conference, led by Head Coach Chris Robertson. Robertson begins his fourth year with the Seahawks ready to take their challenges head on. Last season, the team doubled their winning total from their previous year for the second year in a row and had their highest win total in seven seasons. The 2009 season opened up to two losses against Hartwick and WPI, both games scheduled to establish team potential. The diminutive point difference showed the teams ability to play against good teams, Robertson said. Thats how you learn to be a champion. On Sept. 19, 2009 the Seahawks took on Bridgewater State and won 27 to 20. Quarterback Jeff St. Onge, a senior, threw three touchdown passes to wide receiver, Ben Hall and tight end, Matt Shubert, both seniors. Linebacker Carlos Santos made 11 tackles with two sacks. On Sept. 26, 2009, the Seahawks beat Endicott College for the second time in a row since their first meeting seven years ago. We are not doing anything differently, Robertson said. Preparation from week to week is pretty standard. We take it one game, one opponent at a time. Played on Gaudet Field, the new turf field in Middletown, this was a record breaker for the home team. Michael Dargan, a sophomore, caught a record 224 receiving yards and Brendan Deasy, a freshman, tied the school record with three field goals, 13 points by a kicker. This years incoming freshmen hold real talent for the Seahawks. The past three classes have had up to 40 recruits and they are fitting in well. Its about how the team plays together that matters says safety, Colin McQueen, a sophomore, said. In football you need eleven players on both sides of the ball, it may be different every time, but we step up and play our game. The team will prepare for their major challenges this season against teams such as UMass Dartmouth, Nichols, MIT and Western New England College. I think we prepare just like we always do, said sophomore Spencer Ambrosius. We dont look at our opponents as special teams were just trying to get the win each week. The first home game had 2,700 fans observing their big win. Its nice to know people are supporting you, Robertson said. Its much easier to support a champion. Its nice to know we are making the university proud.
