Session description

High Performing Teams through Team Emotional Intelligence

Geetu Bharwaney, Ei World
Coaches who wish to be at the cutting edge of their practice need to have an awareness of Team Emotional Intelligence. This is different to how most people understand the skills, and practices of an individual who is 'emotionally intelligent'. In fact, we know that team emotional intelligence matters for the high performance of a team. More and more coaches are providing team coaching as an effective way to effect change in organisations and Team Emotional Intelligence offers a framework that can be applied easily. This session will provide a combination of research insight, practitioner experience and examples of practical application to bring the topic of team emotional intelligence to life. By the end of the session participants will be able to describe team emotional intelligence, its relevance to the performance of organisations and have reviewed actual team profiles on Team Emotional Intelligence.

Local to Global coaching beyond the boundaries

Katy Murray, specialist in coaching in multicultural and distance contexts
This interactive session provides an opportunity to explore the boundaries beyond face to face coaching. Katy will share experiences, tips and ideas for developing effective coaching relationships with clients at a distance, and even across continents and cultures. What are the issues and options for building credibility, trust and rapport at a distance; what opportunities can technology open up for us as coaches; practical tips and stories of the good, the bad, and the ugly; what might you adapt in your own practice. Come ready to share your own experiences, this session will stimulate your own ideas about practical tools for your coaching toolkits.

Positive psychology in action: 2 hour workshop

Lucy Ryan, Mindspring
Positive psychology offers an evidence based framework and a rich scientific body of work from which to design your interventions. My intention for this workshop is to dig deeper into two major areas of positive psychology and introduce you to positive interventions that go beyond the norm you can read in most PP books and will stimulate your action and thinking in this area. The two areas we will focus on will be: 1. Character Strengths 2. Motivation and Drive

Typically I work with corporate leaders but you will find the exercises we discuss appropriate for many walks of life. I also tend to work visually, as well as cerebrally, with clients so you will find the exercises involve cards with a wealth of suggested coaching questions. Strengths: Positive Psychologys 24 Character Strengths go beyond most strengths psychometrics, offering clients a route path for growth and development in their life. Using the strengths cards and coaching questions, we will explore together four fundamentals for working with character strengths: How do you help people recognise their strengths (and fall in love with them)? What worth does a client get from exploring their strengths (and considering overuse and underuse); In what other areas can their character strengths be applied and amplified? Beyond your signature strengths, what character strengths need developing to achieve what you want to achieve next in life?

Motivation and Drive: Utilising our Motivation Scale, in the last section of this workshop we will explore the nature of motivation and drive. This section of the workshop brings together much of the new body of scientific work around goals and motivation and shows you how to work in a practical, interesting work with a client, utilising the scale and motivation cards. Within this exercise, well be discussing the main topics of flow, autonomy, self-efficacy, rewards and teamwork.

Developing a Coaching Culture in a local authority our journey so far!

Gina Cole, OD Lead and Helen Jones, Cultural Development Manager at Burnley Council

This session will explore the coaching culture journey undertaken by Burnley Borough Council. You will be introduced to the background research, planning, implementation and organisational impact measures identified by Burnley Borough Council which have since led to the achievement of IiP Gold and Champion Status, a National Training Award for the Coaching Ambassador Programme and most recently to the 2012 EMCC Coaching Organisation Award. Burnley prides itself on providing quality coaching through quality coaches and continually develops its organic approach to cultural change. You will see how coaching adds value to the organisational development strategy and how a coaching culture can be developed in a systemic way and add measurable value to many people practices.

Evidence-Based Coaching: Using Analytics to Improve Performance

Dr Bill Gerrard, Professor of Sport Management and Finance

In his presentation, Bill will outline the development of an evidence-based approach to coaching at Saracens, one of the leading rugby union clubs in England. Analytics play a key role in supporting decisions by the coaching staff. Analytics help the coach-manager to facilitate improved individual performance as well as underpinning strategic review and planning. Key performance indicators (KPIs) have been identified for the team and individual players. A trafficlights system is used to grade performance levels. There is a direct link between performance management and weekly training priorities. Bill will argue that a critical success factor in using analytics to improve performance is the appropriateness of the organisational culture. He will discuss how Saracens combine an evidence-based approach with a people-centred approach. He will conclude that effective organisations exhibit both focus and care.
