Project HUGS
Project HUGS is a philanthropic surgical program dedicated to improving the quality of life for all individuals. Our goal is simple: to improve individuals overall health and wellness by funding the procedures for those in need of our services.

Background and Overview

Founded in 2011, Project HUGS is determined that surgical care and quality of life treatment should not be out of reach for individuals who are uninsured or unable to afford the procedures they need. Project HUGS is deeply committed to expanding and providing access to high-quality surgical care for those who need it most. Charitable donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and institutions directly fund the surgeries individuals need, but cannot afford. Since its founding, Project HUGS has led the way in improving and changing quality of life for many individuals in the Chicago-land area. In the coming year, Project HUGS hopes to expand their surgical care services across the country. The Project HUGS Foundation is 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

A pioneer in providing surgeries and quality of life treatment for those in need, and improving the quality of life for all individuals. A vision for expanding access to high-quality surgical care in all communities, all across the country. Promoting health, wellness and the belief that no one should be denied the surgical care they need.

Project HUGS life-changing program hopes to fulfill the needs and positively change the lives of all our applicants.

Vision for Improving Health- A Unique Surgical Program

Our surgical care and quality of life goals are distinguished by these defining characteristics: Comprehensive Approach: The applicants selected into our program are provided with the surgery they need, at no cost, transportation to and from their procedure, and comfortable accommodations for recovery with their family. Community-Centered: A community-centered approach is key to building local capacity for management and fulfillment of surgeries. Project HUGSs vision is to improve the health and wellness of communities through gradually growing and expanding access across the country, in all communities. Family of Donors: Surgeries are almost entirely funded through our family of donors (individuals, corporations, foundations, institutions). All donations go to funding our patients procedures. Our affiliated surgeons and staff donate their time and expertise to perform charitable surgeries for Project HUGS. Full Accountability & Transparency: We directly oversee and review all patients applications, and choose those admitted to the program. We make those in life-threatening situations our top priority. Committed to transparency and full disclosure, we ensure all donations go directly to funding surgeries and maintaining the Foundation, and that key financial information is readily available. Project HUGS is a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization, and, as such, is organized and operated exclusively for charitable purposes.

Project HUGS- Success Stories

Project HUGS works exclusively with individuals who cannot afford the surgeries they need. We are deeply committed to providing our patients with the very best in surgical care, at no cost: Artur, Chicago: Artur is a husband and father to his 3-year-old son. For over a year, he was in need of a Laminectomya type of spinal decompression surgerybut could not afford the procedure. Artur felt dejected and abandoned, having to accept living in pain, until he heard about Project HUGS from a family friend. He applied and was approved for his surgery at no cost. Artur now knows the joy of holding his child without discomfort, of living without pain and feels healthier and happier. Jorge, Chicago: Jorge needed hardware removal from his left foot after complications from a previous surgery. Unable to afford the corrective surgery,

Jorge dealt with chronic pain for months, until he was accepted to Project HUGS, and provided with the surgery he needed to correct the pain. Monica, Chicago: Monica sustained a Lisfranc injury, requiring screws in her right foot as treatment. She continued to experience significant pain, necessitating a hardware removal procedure, though she did not have the financial means to fix the problem. Project HUGS performed the procedure for her, believing that no one should feel abandoned or have to accept living in pain, just because they cannot afford the surgery they need.
