through a variety of festivals and
events, year-round. The array
of entertainment is staggering.
There are traditional events, like
the Apple Blossom Festival, newer
celebrations like Rhythms at the
Lake, and everything in between.
Even the most particular visitor
can find something to their liking.
Manson Apple
Blossom Festival
May 8 to 11

Eighth annual fly-in, breakfast and

Street Fair

Rodeo Parade
July 19
The Rodeo Parade, in conjunction
with Chelan’s Rodeo, starts in down-

Things to do
Scenic Drives
The Lake Chelan Valley has much to
offer in the way of driving adventures.
Both shores have distinctive sights and
attractions to appeal to every level of
tourist, from the dirt-road adventurer, to
the small-town explorer.
A drive along the south shore will lead
you to Fields Point, a small park with
picnic tables, a swimming hole and an
informational kiosk with a 3-D relief
map of the Lake Chelan basin. Continu-
ing on, the pavement ends at 25-Mile
Creek, but a primitive road heads over
the mountains and into the Entiat Val-
ley. Or you could go straight up to the
great scenic views on Slide Ridge and
Stormy Mountain.
In 2004, wildfires burned nearly
50,000 acres along this route, and visi-
tors who make this drive can get a close-
up look at the burn zone.
The dirt road that winds up Chelan
Butte makes for a shorter trip. The Butte
rises above downtown Chelan to an el-
evation of 3,800 feet, and offers unbeat-
able views of Chelan and the lake, the
Columbia River and the flatlands to the
east.
The north shore offers a relaxed, well-
traveled path to Manson, full of apple or-
chards and new agri-tourism businesses,
including an ever-growing number of
wineries. Downtown Manson is full of
quaint shops, good restaurants and bars,
not to mention a swimming hole and

Riverwalk Pavilion
Murals
Chelan is a 105-year-old town in the
heart of the North Cascades. It is known
as a center for tourism and agriculture.
But for the discriminating mural con-
noisseur, Chelan is also a tremendous
outdoor museum.
Throughout the City of Chelan, the
region’s culture, history and industry are
explored and expressed through murals.
Since 1994, local artist Ron Blackaby
and others have painted scenes depicting
everything from a local grower grappling
with a stockpile of gigantic apples, to
homage to Chief Peter Wapato.
The murals can be found on down-
town businesses, banks and churches.
There are 14 in all, and each one in-
cludes an apple - sometimes well hidden.

Things to do
valley can find the Lake Chelan Histori-
cal Society’s Museum.
Lake Chelan was carved out by gla-
ciers more than 10,000 years ago. Native
Americans populated the lake’s shores
for centuries, before white settlers ar-
rived in the 1800s. The city of Chelan
was founded in 1902.
The museum holds Native American
artifacts from around the region. Other
exhibits tell the story of early white set-
tlers, miners and hydroplane racers.
There is a tribute to the local apple in-
dustry and the lost art of old-fashioned
apple labels.
Apple labels, historic photos and nu-
merous publications are available for
purchase.
Pamphlets are also available for self-
guided historical walking tours. As an
example of early 20th century architec-
ture, check out Hotel Chelan, currently
home of the Campbell’s Restaurant and
Pub. Built in 1901, it is one of the oldest
buildings in Chelan.
Another example of early American
architecture is St. Andrew’s Episcopal
Church, built in 1898 by volunteers. Its
steeple and belfry were added in 1900.
The Ruby Theatre, just down the street,
was built in 1914. It is thought to be the
oldest continuously running movie the-
ater in Washington State.
During the summer the museum will
be open Monday through Saturday 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. Hours will vary in the fall
and winter. The museum will also be
open by appointment during that time.

In Manson, a new reading corner
opened in May 2004. Ray Bumgarner
collected artifacts, pictures and writ-
ings about the area during his 88-year
lifetime in the hopes that one day they
would be put in Manson’s own mu-
seum. When he died, he left more than
$300,000 to the Parks Department to

trout from the local hatchery. The hatch-
ery raises other trout species, which are
transported all over eastern Washington.

Stehekin is a small community at the
northwest end of Lake Chelan, nestled in
a valley in the North Cascade mountains.
Its slow pace and old-fashioned lifestyle
is due to its remote location – no roads

Swimming
Lake Chelan is 50.5 miles of some of
the nation’s cleanest water. A number
of major beaches in both Chelan and
Manson are favorite swimming holes
for locals and visitors alike, but any area
free of boats and other water traffic is
good for swimming in the lake's breath-
taking blue to turquoise water.
The Lake Chelan State Park is an ex-
cellent place to swim, camp, hike and
boat.
Just below the Best Western Lakeside
Lodge on the south shore, Lakeside Park
offers shaded, grassy spaces and easy ac-
cess to the water.
Right in town, along Highway 150
(Manson Road), Don Morse Memorial
Park is a popular destination for swim-
mers and sunbathers. Don Morse Park
also provides several amenities for those
who seek a quick break from the water
– a putting green, a go-cart racetrack,
basketball courts, a sand volleyball pit,
tennis courts, and a skate park. Don
Morse Park is adjacent to the Lakeshore
RV Park, so it’s convenient for the camp-
ing and RV crowd.
Seven miles up Lake Chelan’s north
shore, Manson is the last town in the
Valley accessible by car. In down-
town Manson, near the boat moorage,
Manson Bay Park is less populated than
the swimming areas in Chelan. Manson
Bay features an enclosed swimming area
with a dock and two lifeguards.
Follow signs farther up the back roads
of Manson, and you will be led to one of
the Lake Chelan Valley’s best kept se-
crets – Willow Point Park, just off Lake-
shore Drive. Beautifully landscaped, this
secluded park slopes down to the invit-
ing water and includes park benches and
barbecues available for public use.
Remember to play it safe. Accidents
occur on the lake every year because
people aren’t aware of their surround-
ings or do not know how to swim. Don’t
dive into the lake if you don’t know how
deep the water is. Don’t boat without a
flotation device, and don’t go into deep
water unless you’re an accomplished
swimmer.
Boating
More than 60 percent of Lake Chelan’s
shoreline can be reached only by boat as
it extends into the North Cascades Na-
tional Park or wilderness areas. So it’s no
surprise that many launch docks, boat
rentals and tours are available to anyone

Rules of the water – To keep the lake
clean, it is important to dispose of mil-
foil, a weed that interferes with swim-
ming, boating and fishing. Milfoil is car-
ried on the propellers or other parts of
boats being transported from one body
of water to another. The weed looks
feathery, with at least a dozen pairs
of leaflets. Make sure you remove and
properly dispose of all plant material
from your boat and trailer before they

dispose of it when you return to shore.
This applies to sewage as well – bring a
port-a-potty or make sure your holding
tank is well sealed. Sewage should leave
your boat only at a pump-out station.
Bilge water is not to be pumped into
the lake. Boat washing must be done on
shore to assure that no chemical clean-
ers enter the lake. Exhaust systems must
meet legal requirements and be in good
working order.

River Rafting
Those who seek their thrills on the wa-
ter may find Lake Chelan’s pace a little
slow. In that case, a trip to the head of
the lake is in order. That is where you’ll
find the remote village of Stehekin and
the white waters of the Stehekin River.

end.
The American Canoe Association rates
this stretch of rapids as Class 2, but the
outfitters who lead the tours call it a
2-plus. The Stehekin is faster than most
Class 2 Rivers, and has a number of haz-
ardous log jams.
The second half of the ride is consider-
ably smoother, but boaters still need to
look out for woody debris.

Canoeing and
Kayaking
Lake Chelan offers the canoeist or kay-
aker an opportunity to escape the pres-
sures of modern-day life for a few hours
or even a few days. In the early morning
and late afternoon, when the lake is calm
and the majority of the watercraft is off
the lake, a paddle around the lower basin
is a unique and calming experience.
For a more adventurous paddler,
heading uplake in a canoe or kayak is the
experience of a lifetime. The busy boat
traffic gives way to quiet wild beauty still
largely unknown to most visitors. There
are a number of campgrounds accessible
by water for camping along the way. Be
sure to get through the narrows before
the winds kick up in the afternoon and
makes maneuvering difficult.
The Columbia River offers another
paddling opportunity between the Wells
Dam and Rocky Reach Dam. Beavers,
eagles, ducks, geese and other fowl have
made this area their home. There are
many boat launching places in this area,
making it ideal for long or short pad-
dling trips.
Personal
Watercraft
With such an expansive surface, Lake
Chelan is in no danger of running out
of room for boaters. All the same, there
are those who prefer the motorboats
smaller, more maneuverable cousin, the
personal watercraft. You need not even
own a PWC, as several rental agencies
offer them here.
As for every other vehicle on the water,

certain regulations govern the operation
of personal watercraft. Most important-
ly, a Coast Guard-approved life jacket
must be worn during operation. Drivers
must be at least 16 years of age, and mi-
nors must ride with an adult. You must
be 18 to rent a personal watercraft.
Water-skiing and other towing is pro-
hibited from PWC’s. The only exception
is when the craft’s manufacturer has
rated it for three passengers and an ob-
server is on board to keep an eye on the
person being towed.
Fishing
Fishing Lake Chelan can mean an all-
day excursion with one of the Valley’s
fishing guides, or dropping a line off the
dock between Campbell’s Resort and
the old bridge. The biggest catches are
the plentiful lake trout and the prized
Chinook salmon.
Stocking programs release about
200,000 cutthroat trout in Lake
Chelan. There is no limit on lake trout,
or Mackinaw, which are in season every
day of the year. The state’s largest-
ever lake trout was pulled out of Lake
Chelan, weighing in at 35 pounds, 7
ounces.
Due to dwindling numbers, Chinook
fishing is limited to the month of May.
The Kokanee, which are landlocked
sockeye salmon, congregate in the wa-
ters near Lakeside Park in April and
May and make their way to Mill Bay
near Manson by late June, before head-
ing farther uplake. They are also in sea-
son year-round.
The prize fishing in Roses and Wap-
ato Lakes near Manson may be more of
a secret. Each of those lakes gets about
150 jumbo rainbow trout every spring.
You’ll also catch catfish, crappie, bass,
brown trout and bluegill on Roses.
Other fish found in Wapato Lake are
bluegill, perch, crappie and largemouth
bass.
The Columbia River and its tributar-
ies north of Lake Chelan offer steelhead
and Chinook salmon fishing in season.

Chelan. In Stehekin, McGregor Moun-

every Mother’s Day – it’s the Clark-

at the Lake Chelan Golf Course. The
pond is stocked with trout, and every
child between the ages of one and 14
who reels in a fish gets a prize. This
year, the derby is Sunday, May 11, in the

the Lake Chelan Sportsman’s Associa-
tion.

Pig Jig
This run is a 2K/5K event that takes
you through Manson’s streets the morn-
ing of the Manson Apple Blossom Pa-
rade. This year, the Pig Jig is May 10
starting at 8:30 a.m. Meet race organiz-
ers in downtown Manson. Arrive by 7:30
a.m. to register the day of the race. The
fee is $15. Proceeds benefit the schol-
arship fund for Manson’s royalty. All

Sky Park on top of Chelan Butte, using
rising pockets of hot air called thermals
to lift them 9,000 to 12,000 feet above
sea level. Hang glider pilots can then
travel as far as Idaho or Canada.
Chelan hosts several hang gliding
events each year, the biggest being the
Chelan Cross Country Classic – one of
four events in the nation sanctioned by
the United States Hang Gliding Associa-
tion. If the weather cooperates, the pilots
will fly for six days of competition end-
ing Saturday, July 5.
Hang gliding and paragliding are
extreme sports that are generally not
spectator friendly, but a trip to the top
of the butte to watch the pilots launch is
worth the drive. The best viewing time
is between noon and 2 p.m., when the
thermals become active.
A dirt road that switches back and
forth up the butte will take you to the
top – the ride is slow and quite bumpy.

Smoking is a fire hazard and is not
allowed on the butte. Bring plenty of liq-
uids and sunscreen – the sun is relent-
less up there.

Lake Chelan’s resort atmosphere, the

area a great destination for golfers from
across the state and around the world.

along the Columbia River. The front nine is
called “Desert” and the back nine “Lakes,”
and the landscaping accentuates these
designations to a “tee!” Desert Canyon also
offers a championship putting course. Cart
rentals are included in course fees and are
a necessity. Desert Canyon was recently
purchased by Homestead Northwest and
reopens this spring with a newly remod-

The Lake Chelan Municipal Golf Course
is conveniently located in Chelan and has
greens fees that compare favorably to
some of the other local courses. Playing
conditions are excellent, and the views, of
course, are grand. Club and cart rentals
are available. Metal spikes OK. There are
senior, junior and twilight discounts, a
driving range and practice putting greens.
Check out the full service Lovo’s on the
Green restaurant in the clubhouse – it’s
operated this year by the owners of the
popular Lovo’s Bistro restaurant in down-
town Chelan.
Alta Lake Golf Course, 20 miles north of
Lake Chelan on Highway 97, has still more
scenic mountain and lake views. The front
nine is known as “Mountain,” while the
back nine is “Desert Links.” The challeng-
ing course has large undulating greens and

a practice putting green.
The MA-8 Golf Course is a 9-hole course
located by Mill Bay Casino in Manson. Be
sure to visit this fun little course and play 9
or 18-holes.
Fifteen miles farther north, at Bridgeport
State Park, is Lake Woods Golf Course
overlooking Rufus Woods Lake behind
Chief Joseph Dam. This is a 9-hole short
course open to the public, easy enough for
beginner and intermediate players to play
in the cool shade of large trees on a hot
summer’s day.
An 18-hole putting course called “The
Green” at Don Morse Park in Chelan of-
fers fun for everyone from tiny tots to hot
shot golfers. No “putt-putt” course, the
Green has rolling terrain, water, rocks and
hazards. Great family fun, no tee times
necessary.

Shooting Range
Did you bring your gun with you on
vacation but can’t find anything to shoot?
Head to the shooting range managed by
the North Cascades Sportsman’s Club. The
public range, located about 10 miles north
of Chelan, has a 75-yard outdoor pistol
range, 400-yard outdoor rifle range, and
areas for muzzleloaders, trap, skeet and
archery.
The Club’s most popular event is the
annual turkey shoot the Sunday before
Thanksgiving.
The range is open to the public on
Thursday’s at 7 p.m. and Sunday’s at 10
a.m. for trap and skeet shooting, and week-
end days from 10 a.m. until dark for firing
on the rifle and pistol ranges.
To get to the range, head north on High-
way 97A and take a left before the Lake
Chelan Municipal Airport onto Apple Acres
Road. Follow the road for four or five miles
then turn left on Washington Creek Road.

Camping
Day-Use Parks
There are plenty of campgrounds
and parks for visitors to enjoy.
Summer in the Lake Chelan Valley
is wonderful! The lake and the
surrounding mountains, hills and
orchards provide the beauty, and
the parks provide the places to
stay and play. The Lake Chelan
park system provides day-use
parks as well as campgrounds for
overnight stays.
Don Morse Memorial Park is
where the City of Chelan meets the lake.
It opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m.,
Memorial Day weekend through Labor
Day. It features a large swimming area
with lots of grass where visitors and
locals soak up the sun or take a break
between dips. There are also basketball
courts, a volleyball court, tennis courts
and a skate park. Small children will
enjoy the variety of big toys in the chil-
dren’s play area.
Also available for a fee, are the 18-hole
putting course, and a go-cart course. A
rental outlet has plenty of recreational
items from board games to bicycles, ca-
noes and boats to keep the visitor who
forgot his tennis racket happy.

Lakeside Park, just off Highway 97A
at the west entrance to Chelan, is a 10-
acre park with a playground area, shade
trees, a seawall, an unsupervised swim-
ming area, volleyball and basketball
courts and two floating docks.
Lakeside Park is also the site of many
events throughout the year, including a
hang glider “fly-in” and a triathlon.

Chelan Riverwalk Park lies on both
sides of the Chelan River between the old
bridge and the Dan Gordon Bridge. It’s
12 acres feature a one-mile scenic river
loop trail, a free boat launch, day-use
moorage, a picnic shelter and restrooms.
Regular concert events are planned for
2008 taking place at the Pavilion.
Riverwalk Park is a great place to take
a morning or evening walk or run. For

Manson Bay Park is located in
downtown Manson and has three day-
use boat docks, a swimming area with
two lifeguards and a 32-slip marina.
There is a $13 per night moorage fee -
$15 with water and power hookups. A
sewer pump-out station is also available.

Old Mill Park is located on State
Route 150, two miles east of Manson.
This park has a four-lane boat launch,
day-use boat moorage, a pump-out sta-
tion, a picnic area with restrooms and
boat-trailer parking. The boat launch
day pass is $7 for both residents and
non-residents. A yearly pass costs non-
resident's $40, and resident's $25. For

Willow Point Park in Manson is two
miles up-lake from downtown Manson.
This two-acre park is right on Lake
Chelan with a picnic area, swimming and
restrooms. For more information, call

Singleton Field in Manson, near the
intersection of Madeline Road and State
Route 150, has ball fields, a regulation
basketball court, a large grassy area and
restrooms.
Fields Point Landing is on the
south shore of Lake Chelan, approxi-
mately 17 miles from Chelan. This
17-acre park features picnic areas, re-
strooms and a 3-D interpretive display
about the Lake Chelan Valley and the
surrounding region. Fields Point is a
departure point for people traveling up-
lake aboard one of the ferries. The land-
ing is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily,
from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

On the Columbia River, Chelan Falls
Park is a 53-acre park with a swim-
ming area, horseshoe pits, playground
equipment, restrooms and showers, a
shoreline trail, a tennis court, picnic shel-
ters, soccer and softball fields, some day-
use boat moorage and a two-lane boat
launch, plus plenty of parking. Call (509)

Visitors to this park may catch a
glimpse of a hang glider or paraglider us-
ing it for a landing site.
Powerhouse Park will be closed for
the 2008 and 2009 season. As part of the
license issued to the Chelan PUD for the
Chelan Dam, habitat restoration work
must be done along the river adjacent to
the powerhouse. The work will help cre-
ate a better area for fish spawning in the
future.

Information
The overnight campgrounds listed
here are accessible by boat. They
are equipped with tent sites, fire
rings, toilets and picnic tables. The
docks are either fixed or floating
and cannot be reached by car. More

The campgrounds open during
2008 are: Deer Point, Graham
Harbor, Corral Creek, Prince Creek,
Domke Falls, Refrigerator Harbor,
Lucerne, Flick Creek, Manley Wham,
Weaver Point, Moore Point, Safety
Harbor and Purple Point.

Camping
State Parks
Lake Chelan State Park and 25-
Mile Creek State Park charge $17 for
a regular site, $12 for a primitive site and
$23 for a partial utility site and $24 for
a full utility site, per day. A daily fee of
$5 is charged for watercraft launching,
sewage dumping and parking. For more

Campgrounds
There are numerous campgrounds
in the Lake Chelan Valley - next
to a lake or the Columbia River, in
sunshine or in forest.
Lakeshore RV Park is adjacent to
Don Morse Memorial Park in Chelan. It
has 165 full hook-up sites (water, electric,
sewer and cable TV), which accommodate
RVs up to 40 feet, as well as 22 - 16’ x 16’
tent pads. The park also has picnic tables,
a dump station, wireless Internet and
ADA accessible restrooms and showers.

Wapato Lake Park on the north side
of Lake Chelan is operated by the Manson
Parks and Recreation Department. This
two-acre park has 26 RV and 14 tent sites,
showers, restrooms, a pump-out station,
docks and a boat launch. An upgraded RV

Lake Chelan 1889: The First Congregational
Church of Chelan, later the Little Stone

Valley Church, was organized in Lakeside, then

bunkhouse were built.
1889: The first steamer on Lake
Chelan - “The Belle of Chelan.”
1890s: Miners came into the valley.
1892: The railroad from the south
reached Wenatchee.
1900: The first Lady of the Lake pas-
senger boat began service. It operated
until 1915.
1927: A dam was built and the lake
was raised 28 feet to provide hydroelec-
tric power.

eline deeded 346.14 acres to Wapato Ir-
rigation Co., incorporated in 1906, which
then developed the town.
1911: Chelan Leader newspaper an-
nounced the birth of the new town of
Manson on June 22. Manson was named
for Manson Backus, one of the initial in-
vestors in the town’s development.
1912: The first school was built, and a
U.S. Post Office was established.
1921: The town’s first apple blossom
festival was held. The first queen was

1891: The town was founded and plat-
ted.
1891: The Chelan Falls Leader newspa-
per began. It moved to Chelan in 1892.

1800s: The Entiat Valley was first
settled by the Columbia River Chinook
Indian Tribe. It was originally named

site of Entiat to settlers in the area.
1906: The first high school, Union
High School was built.
1913: A fire destroyed the old town of
Entiat except for six buildings. The town
was rebuilt and moved closer to the rail-
road tracks, which were built in 1914.
1944: The town officially adopted their
corporate seal.
