Max. Marks: 50

Note:
1. Answer any FIVE fuLtquestiQns." "_ ____ _ __ _ "___ _ n ~__.n____

2. Missing data if any may be suitably assum~d and clearly be indicated. 3. Draw neat ske_tches wher~y'~( neces~ary: -" 1A. What is significant depth?

(1 Mark)"

1B. Discuss Standard Penetration Test. What are the various corrections? What is the importance of the test in geotechnical engineerin"g?_" (5 Marks) 1C. Describe the salient features of a good sub soil investigation report. (4 Marks)

2A. Derive an expression for active earth pressure behind a wall due to a c-<t> soil (Bell's equation). (5 marks) 2B. Determine the active earth pressure and its point of application on the retaining wall shown in the Fig.1. Take Yw=9.81 kN/m3. (5 marks) 3A. What is a stability number? 3B. Discuss the principles of the design of retaining walls. (1 mark) (5 Marks)

3C.An excavation is to be made in the soil deposit with a slope of 350to the horizontal and to a depth of 22 m. The soil has the following properties-c'=30kN/m2, cp'=20, y=18kN/m3. (a)Determine the factor of safety of the slope assuming full friction is mobilized. (b) If the factor of safety with respect to cohesion is 1.5, what would be the factor of safety with respect to friction. (Refer Fig.2) (4 Marks)

4A. Explain Terzaghi's method of determining the bearing capacity of soil? (5 Marks) 48. Calculate the net ultimate bearing capacity of a rectangular footing 2mX4m jn plan, founded at a depth of 1.5 m below the ground surface. The load on the footing acts at an angle of 10. to the vertical. The saturated unit weight of the soil is 19kN/m3. The rate of loading is slow and hence the effective stress shear strength parameters can be used in the analysis. c' =12kN/m2and <1>' =30. . Natural water table

6B. In a 9 pile group, the pile diameter is 30 cm and the center to center spacing of the square group is 1.4 m. If unconfined compressive strength of the soil is 60kN/m2, determine whether the failure would occur with the pile acting individually or as a group? All the piles are 10m long. Take a=O.9. Also determine the safe load if the factor of safety is 2. (Nc=9) (5 marks)
