When show biz and sports merge, its headline material. Some instances are when PBA cagers end up with actresses or when Manny Pacquiao ventures into yet another TV show. Lately, the newest sensation is UAAP Womens Volleyball. The championship battle between De La Salle Lady Spikers and Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles were always jampacked. The players of both teams have gained movie starlike popularity. The charming spiker of Ateneo, Gretchen Ho is exclusively dating TV heartthrob, Robi Domingo. Weve known each other since high school, says Robi. Gretchen and I met at a soiree. At first there were bad vibes between our batches. Weve been dating since June 2012. But as much as possible we want to keep it low-key. We have an agreement not to divulge too much information because we want to keep our bond sacred. How did you show Gretchen your support after her team lost the championship? I told her to look at the bigger picture. Even if they didnt win, mas nag-trending pa siya and the rest of the Fab Five of Ateneo sa Twitter than the winners. She still has a long journey ahead. Vinas Life Revolves Around Pretty Lil Ceana

Vina Morales is one proud mama. Her daughter Ceana (who turns 4 on April 25) just graduated from kindergarten. Will she allow her unica hija to join show biz someday? If she is inclined and the time is right, then okay, Vina says. For now, shes too young to know what she wants to do in life. She can do commercials. Like any mom, I would be thrilled to see my baby in a TV ad or on a billboard. Now that her love life is zero, her world revolves around Ceana. My close friend (daughter of a wellloved show biz icon) feels so bad for her son, who was beaten up by four bodyguards and friends of the son of a high-ranking official in a Quezon City bar on Friday night. It was a case of mistaken identity, my friend sighs. When they learned that he was from a show biz clan, it was too late. My son was already badly bruised. We are still planning what to do.

Al Gaeit, the Assistant of the Undersecretary for Public Rights of the Emirs Office, who met with the Philippine Embassy officials in Riyadh. Binay said Zapantas reprieve begins the day after the deadline set by the victims relatives for the payment of the blood money. However, the Vice President clarified that the reprieve did not mean that the deadline set for Zapantas family to pay the blood money has also been extended. VICE President Jejomar C. Binay yesterday announced that Joselito Zapanta, the overseas Filipino worker scheduled for execution in Saudi Arabia, has been given a three-month reprieve by the Saudi government. In a press conference at the Coconut Palace, Binay, the Presidential Adviser for OFW Concerns, said that Saudi King Abdullah has given an order to defer the execution of all qizas or death penalty cases in the Arab country, including that of Zapanta. The hacktivist group, Anonymous Philippines, has hacked the official website of President Aquino to protest his alleged failure to resolve the crisis in Sabah. The intrusion on the Office of the Presidents website, www. president.gov.ph, occurred at around 1:30 am Thursday, forcing the Palace web administrator to temporarily close down the site. Secretary Herminio Coloma of the Presidential Communications Operations Office said they expect to resume public display of the Presidents website in a few hours after needed protection measures have been put in place. At around 1:30 a.m. today, we detected a breach when an errant sentence critical of the government on the Sabah issue was found to have been inserted in one of the news items within the website. No further intrusions were made as the internal security protocols were activated, Coloma said. In a message posted on the website, the hackers criticized the Presidents supposed inaction to prevent the the deaths of several Filipinos in Sabah as well as the rights abuses against women

Gerald, Maja in Bad Romance?

THE feedback on the net about the Maja Salvador-Gerald Anderson romance is generally negative, but the parties concerned just dont care. They have yet to admit that theyre officially on and just insist on the usual line that theyre just friends. But its common knowledge that action speaks louder than words. They were recently seen surfing in La Union and they even posted their pictures on the net. Right now, Majas show, Ina Kapatid Anak, is rating well but its because Kim Chiu co-stars with her. The real gauge of how her romance with Gerald is affecting her career would be for her to do a solo show or movie. As we all know, when she was launched by Star Cinema in the film Cactus Heart, with her then real life BF Matteo Guidicelli, the box office result was not that satisfactory. As for Gerald, he has two new films coming up, one with Tikoy Aguiluz and one with Erik Matti (co-starring Piolo Pascual). Lets see how his romance with Maja would affect its box office performance. Pimentel Calls Zubiri Face of Dagdag-Bawas

SENATOR Aquilino Pimentel III on Wednesday criticized his fellow senatorial candidate Juan Miguel Zubiri for supposed failure to address the problem of poll fraud in Mindanao. Pimentel called Zubiri the face of dagdag-bawas (voteshaving) and a fake senator who resigned in 2011 out of a desire for political profit, not for principle. Zubiri resigned after certain personalities admitted that former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo had a hand in election cheating in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) in 2007. He was a candidate of Arroyos Team Unity. In the four years that he was a pretender in the Senate, what did Zubiri do to address the perennial problem of election cheating in the Armm?, Pimentel said. Zubiri, who is running under the United Nationalist Alliance, earlier challenged Pimentel to show his accomplishments in the Senate before criticizing the no balance billing in public hospitals implemented in Zubiris hometown in Bukidnon province. Unlike his nemesis, Pimentel said he worked to help Armm reverse its reputation as the cheating capital of the Philippines being one of the authors of Joint Resolution No. 17 which caused the cleansing of the list of voters in the region. Zubiri is the face of dagdagbawas and other insidious and malevolent forms of electoral fraud in this country. He is one good reason why some of our people completely distrust elections and politicians, the senator, who is seeking re-election under the administration-backed Team PNoy, said. As chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms and Peoples Participation, Pimentel said he authored/coauthored and sponsored four significant bills, two of which have become laws. TWO showbiz couples parted ways recently and both are said to have had bitter breakups. Singer Jay R is reported to be accused by former Bb. Pilipinas International Krista Kleiner of battery. Their relationship lasted for more than two years. Everyone thought Kristas showbiz career would flourish after she became a beauty queen but what happened was the opposite. All the more that it didnt take off. We havent heard anything from her until she and Jay R broke up, with her saying shes a victim of physical abuse. They used to be so sweet with each other, especially when Krista was a contestant at Bb. Pilipinas and Jay R was so supportive. Wonder what happened. Jay R refuses to defend himself and say anything about Kristas allegation. Someone close to him says he just doesnt want to dignify the issue anymore. Another showbiz couple whose relationship obviously didnt end well is that of Sheena Halili and Rocco Nacino. They never officially admitted theyre on but its obvious on Sheenas twits that their parting was less than cordial. She confesses theyve lost their past closeness to one another. As Cindy in Pahiram ng Sandali, Max would deliver her baby abroad and still would not allow the father, Dingdong Dantes as Alex, to see their baby. But Alex has a terminal illness, pancreatic cancer, and Cindy relents when she learns about this. Mark Gil as Larry is devastated to learn his son Alex is dying while his other son, Neil Ryan See as Andrew, is now confined in a mental hospital after losing his sanity due to substance abuse. Lorna Tolentino as Janice is reconciled with her late husbands other woman, Alessandra de Rossi as Baby, who she helps deliver her baby. Baby reveals to her that Christopher de Leon as Philip has forgiven her before he died for having an affair with Alex. Prepare to shed some tears as Pahiram shows its final heart-rending episodes this week.

LA IMMIGRATION JUDGE TERMINATES REMOVAL PROCEEDINGS OF BATTERED WIFE

At the status, master calendar hearing on February 27, 2013, Los Angeles Immigration Judge Monica M. Little terminated the removal proceedings of a Mexican respondent battered by her U.S. citizen husband, upon oral motion of Deputy District Counsel Jennifer W. Smith of the Department of Homeland Security, as requested by this Author. Indeed, this Author represents the Latina respondent in her removal proceedings for entering the United States without inspection, when she was brought here from Mexico at one-and-a half year old. Her identity is withheld to protect her privacy and maintain confidentiality. Facts Of And Proceedings In The Case: This 31-year old female respondent has lived, studied, and worked in the United States since 1985, when she came here from Morelia, Michocan, Mexico. She was served with a Notice To Appear on February 21, 2008, which placed her in removal proceedings. On or about July 13, 2009, she filed, through this Author, her Form EOIR-42B, Application for Cancellation of Removal For certain Nonpermanent Residents with the Texas Service Center. During the pendency of her application for cancellation of removal with the Los Angeles Immigration Court, on January 2, 2010, her U.S.citizen husband committed domestic violence on her by hitting her above her left eye with his forehead. She fell to the ground and began crying. She sustained a large bump above her left eye. A family friend came into the room and pulled her husband out. He was extremely intoxicated. He was prosecuted and convicted of domestic violence on her on January 6, 2010, by the Riverside County Superior Court. On June 6, 2011, she filed her Form I-360, SelfPetition of Abuse Spouse of U.S.-Citizen Husband, and her Form I-485, Application for Adjustment of to Lawful Permanent Resident with the 6 Status www.FilAmInsider.com Vermont Service Center. She is separated from her husband because of the domestic violence. She takes care of their four-year-old son. Prima Facie Determination And Extension and Termination Of Removal Proceedings: On July 11, 2011, the Vermont Service Center sent notice on establishment of prima facie case for classification under self-petitioning provisions of the Violence Against Women Act. The Vermont Service Center subsequently approved the Form I-765, Application For Employment Authorization on November 18, 2011 to November 17, 2012. Moreover, on May 15, 2012, the Vermont Service Center extended the prima facie case determination for 180 days up to November 11, 2012. After which, no further extension was granted. A recent check online with the Department of Homeland Security revealed that the Form I-360 is still pending. At the status hearing on February 27, 2013, before LA Immigration Judge Monica M. Little, this Author reminded the Court that the Form I-360 self-petition of the abused respondent has been pending since June 6, 2011. So, the Court inquired of Deputy District Counsel Jennifer W. Smith of the Department of Homeland Security, if the Department would lessen the Courts docket in view of the delay in adjudication by the Vermont Service Center. She obliged by orally moving for the termination of the renewal proceedings of the respondent, as requested by this Author. Judge Monica M, Little issued Order, terminating without prejudice the removal of proceedings on February 27, 2013.

ALDEN Richards is currently being linked to Julie Anne San Jose and Lauren Young. Julie Anne is the established ka-love team of Elmo Magalona while Lauren is said to be Elmos real life squeeze. Hes also being linked to his own ka-love team, Louise de los Reyes, whos the girlfriend of Enzo Pineda. How come hes not courting anyone whos not attached to any other actor yet? A writer asks Alden pointblank: Bading ka ba? Instead of being offended, Alden just laughed. Sure po ako sa pagkalalaki ko, he says. Wala lang sa agenda ko ang panliligaw as of now kasi bago pa lang ang career ko at sayang naman ang opportunities coming my way. BB Gandanghari didnt disappoint in Halik ng Tarantula (based on the best-selling novel which inspired the Hollywood movie Kiss of the Spider Woman), mounted over the weekend at the Teatrino (Greenhills, San Juan City) as the first venture of her own production. My friends and I caught the first staging last Thursday, March 7 (last show was on March 9), and although we found it much too long (two hours and a half, excluding the 15-minute intermission) we sat it out until the much-awaited(?) finale when BB as Molina (played by William Hurt in the movie) was locked in a lip service with her leading man, newcomer Jovic Monsod as Valentin (played by the late Raul Julia in the movie). I guess those who were anxiously waiting for the much-ballyhooed passionate nude love scenes (the plays publicity come-on) went home a bit disappointed (bitin), especially since those who watched the press preview the night before were gushing over how BB and her other leading man, Jet Alcantara, went all the way, kissing in gay abandon and stripping to the buff
before the curtain fell. Was the first regular run purposely made more tame because Jovics parents and BBs mom Eva Cario were in the audience? (Said Eva, Ano kaya ang makikita ko? adding in jest, Baka baliw na ako paglabas ko dito. Luckily, she survived the play with her sanity intact.) Newcomer Jovic, who was among the tenants of Big Brother in Pinoy Big Brothers Teen Edition four years ago (When he was 16, said his manager Jonas Gaffud), was a revelation even if he buckled (but only slightly) in some lines. He appeared comfortable onstage and he deserved a pat on the shoulder for having memorized those long lines during the more than two hours that he was onstage with BB. Did the third actor back out because he was intimidated by the challenge of delivering those kilometric dialogues? We cant say anything about Jets performance because we didnt see him. But maybe we would, in case BB staged a repeat as she promised. Three cheers to director Soxie Topacio for his controlled work, despite the fact that he was handling relatively new actors.

How Maja Salvador Stays Positive Amid Intrigues

So how was your Valentine date? a show biz scribe asked Maja Salvador. Craning her neck, the actress called for her handler behind a group of reporters crowded around her. Maja asked, feigning surprise as if hinting that the interview was supposed to be only about her contract signing as endorser of Tupperware Brands fragrances, and not about her relationship with rumored boyfriend Gerald Anderson. Maja and Ina, Kapatid, Anak costar Kim Chiu had a much-publicized falling out earlier this year, when Kim found out that her close friend has been dating her ex-boyfriend Gerald. Intrigues are part of this business, and one should know how to handle them, she said. Id rather stay quiet than talk and try to clear the issues. I know who I am. I just want peace. Maja pointed out that in the world of show biz, rumormongers will try to concoct incredible stories out of thin air. And theres nothing anyone can do about it. Sometimes people write about an issue as if they know the whole story. Theyll meddle and play with our lives because its their job, she lamented. Does she turn to Gerald for support amid all the controversies? Just because I have a suitor doesnt mean I have to solely rely on him. I also draw inspiration from my career, my fans and family. Leave family out And when asked how she feels about Gerald declaring in a recent interview that shes special to him, Maja could only muster, Im thankful. Despite everything, Maja chooses to appreciate all her blessings, and look at the brighter side. But still, bashers do get the better of her at times, especially when they cross the line and drag her family into the fray. I do get negative comments whenever I post something on Instagram, but I welcome them because its their opinion, she said. But dealing with them every single day could be exasperating, Maja confessed. Im not a statue or made of stone. I get hurt, too. Theyre too much to take at times. She pleaded: Im the celebrity here; the one workingplease leave my family out. I want to protect them. So far, Maja has managed to keep her composure, not giving in to the bait and bile of her detractors. I dont want to waste my time replying to them. Dingdongs drama series, Pahiram ng Sandali, which also features Lorna Tolentino, Christopher de Leon and Max Collins, is set to air its final episode on March 15. Dingdong plays Alex, a photojournalist who falls in love with an older woman, Janice, who happens to be the editor in chief of the publication where he is employed. Lessons learned Asked what he learned from playing Alex, the actor said: You have to stand by every decision you make, may it be right or wrongthis will mold you. Its how you rise and step up from difficulties and failures, especially in a not-so-perfect situation, that truly matters. He admitted to feeling relieved that the series, with a theme so sensitive, complicated and tragic, would soon end. Carrying on with complicated relationships is still unacceptable to most viewers. The topic is still taboo to Pinoys. Also, the story is so melancholic. Its too draining for us actors. Dingdong will soon be seen in an independently produced film called Dance of the Steel Bars by Cesar Apolinario and Marnie Manicad. It will be shown in SM cinemas in May. Burbank, CA On Thursday, March 7, 2013, the 2nd Annual Queen Lola Pageant was formally re-introduced to the community. Having had tremendous success the previous year, it was only fitting that a pageant dedicated to and in celebration of Filipino grandmothers (lolas) blasts off this Spring 2013. In brief, the Queen Lola pageant was created to be a heartwarming and touching tribute to lolas everywhere. Too many times, lolas are not fully appreciated or recognized for their contributions to society, and more importantly, to our families. The Queen Lola Pageant is simply an opportunity to showcase the lolas skills, talents, capabilities, personalities, and allow each lola to tell their story. Heard on the Radyo Inquirer show Kliq Showbiz (dzIQ 990 AM, Monday to Friday, 3 to 5 p.m.): Haughty Star is not well-loved by peers. In fact, HS has incurred the ire of not a few coworkers. So it comes as no surprise that HS is whispered about in the studio because of an embarrassing condition. Under the hot studio lights, HS sweats profusely, particularly under the arms. It is most obvious when HS is wearing a colorful outfit. We suggest HS go after a deodorant commercial. Or Wet Ones.

Neophyte Insider was unhappy with the way a Pet Project turned out. Although fast friends with PPs producers and stars, NI quit in the middle of production. PP ran into all sorts of problems; NI was probably right to bail out before the ship sank.
This mom not a good role model

Who knew Gorgeous Starlets Feisty Mom had the makings of an actress? FM accompanied GS on a provincial sortie. At the airport on their way back to Manila, FM had to answer the call of nature. Since boarding time was minutes away, FM had to rush. She was dismayed to find a long queue at the ladies room. Quick-thinking FM pretended to be disabled so she could use the cubicle for the handicapped.

MI fell in love with screen partner, Cute Girlfriend who was similarly smitten. Romance quickly turned to animosity, however. CG broke up with MI because she couldnt stand his body odor. Talented Performers ego has ballooned bigger than his fan base, says a mole. Making matters worse, TPs HighFlying Manager has likewise become very demanding. Local producers are being turned off by the duos overbearing ways. No one wants to hire TP because HMs asking price is too steep. TP should really consider dumping HM now. Humility goes a long way in the biz.

Los Angeles-based Fil-Am dancer Peter De Guzman recently received the 2013 Philippine National Commission for Culture and the Arts Ani ng Dangal for Dramatic Arts for his choreography in the PAE Live! production of Lonnie Carters The Romance of Magno Rubio and Bernardo Bernardos Tagalog translation Ang Romansa ni Magno Rubio which opened the 2011 Winter Season of the prestigious Ford Anson Theater in Hollywood. Previously, De Guzman won the 2012 LA Weekly Theatre Award for Best Choreography for the same play. Incidentally, your humble columnist (BB) also received the 2012 LA Weekly Theatre Award for Best Direction for the same production but apparently failed to qualify under NCCAs stringent rules. Were puzzled but happy nonetheless that our Tribute to the Manongs, a Depressionera low-budgeted production, merited rave reviews from LA mainstream critics as well as three other nominations from LA Weekly: Best Actor (Jon Jon Briones), Best Fight Choreography (Jon Jon Briones), and Best Ensemble. Actor Briones was also nominated for Best Actor in the Ovation Awards. The staging of MAGNO RUBIO at Inside the Ford Theatre capped the celebration of Filipino American Heritage month. Lonnie Carters THE ROMANCE OF MAGNO RUBIO, based on Carlos Bulosans short story, essays the challenges faced by the early Filipino migrant workers in California during the 1930s. A major highlight of that particular Manong-journey was when Assemblyman Luis A. Alejo (D-Salinas) came as a special guest to a performance of MAGNO RUBIO. Assemblyman Alejo initiated ACR 74--Californias apology for a history of injustice against Filipinos-which was recently passed unanimously by the California Senate and Assembly -- and presented the cast and production staff with a copy of ACR 74. Incidentally, Assemblyman Alejo hails from Watsonville, CA scene of the most violent anti-Filipino riots in the 1930s.

PINOY IN AMERICA

position of being both a reporter on and example of the brightest in Filipino-American culture. Hes a true pride of the community. I cant let a description of the richness of Filipino life in this area pass without mentioning music and, within that, Pinoy jazz. I must admit to some bias here because jazz happens to be my choice of music, but I really think this area has something special, given the many exceptional Filipino jazz artists who are based here. Theres, for example, Mon David and Charmaine Clamor, two singers who by their sheer talent, have done so much to expand the boundaries of Filipino jazz. There is also Winston Raval, who is as good as jazz pianist-composers get. And then theres keyboardist Tateng Katindig and saxophonist Ner de Leon, nicknamed the Batman and Robin of Pinoy jazz because they always seem to be together. There are many others. I wish I could mention them all here. There are many other individuals and groups that make the Greater L.A. Area a hotbed of Filipino artistic and cultural activity: musicians, singers and entertainers, painters, writers, community leaders, and others. And events celebrating our culture take the stage constantly. Last year we even had a pageant for Filipina lolas. (It was a fundraiser staged by ABS-CBN Foundation International and Insider Productions, the publisher of FilAm Insider.) Watch as the pageant makes a return this year. The L.A. area, for that matter, is a hotbed of multi-ethnic activity, an expansive and colorful tapestry of different cultures that is without equal in all of Southern California and that symbolizes, along with the biggest and brightest American cities, the cultural

Filipino Culture is Alive and well in the Greater Los Angeles Area Part II
The L.A. area is also home to Kababayan L.A., the news channel that for quite a while now has been doing an amazing job of highlighting Pinoy culture. Hosted by the incomparable and multitalented Jannelle So, the daily news program has filled a huge gap in the coverage of Pinoy artistic and cultural goings-on in the Greater L.A. area. Kababayan L.A. continues to be the go-to program for Pinoy artists, organizations and businesses when they want to promote their works. You havent made it if you havent made it to Kababayan L.A. And speaking of championing Pinoy culture, L.A. is also home to Ruben Nepales. Nepales, who chairs the board of no less than the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the organization behind the Golden Globe awards), has earned the respect of Filipinos worldwide for the reporting hes done on Filipino newsmakers in Hollywoodand theres quite a few of them, whether stars or movie industry professionals. Nepales writes one of the most popular columns in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Only in Hollywood, through which he does his reporting on not only Hollywoods biggest starssuch as Nicole Kidman, Sacha Baron Cohen, Russel Crowe and Quentin Tarantino, just to name those hes interviewed recentlybut also up-and-coming names such as Vanessa Hudgens, Darren Criss and Hailee Steinfeld, who all have ties to the Philippines. He has compiled some of his pieces in his book My Filipino Collection: The Philippines in Hollywood, (an Anvil Publishing release). Its a must-read for Pinoys who are crazy about showbiz.
