UAIS 2100
The SKANTI UAIS 2100 is a new Class A shipborne Universal Automatic Identification System. Designed to meet the International Maritime Organizations (IMO) requirements for AIS equipment on board SOLAS vessels.

Improved Safety at Sea With an AIS system on board, data can be received automatically from other AIS equipped vessels or base stations within VHF range. The UAIS transponder communicates on a VHF data link, which enables the UAIS to see around corners and obstacles. The data presented on suitable display equipment, such as the SKANTI KDU 2100 Keyboard Display Unit, can provide navigators with important information long before visual contact is established. Text Messages The AIS system can also be used to transmit text messages between vessels within VHF range, or from vessel to shore and vice versa. This capability is particularly useful for broadcasting safety messages, port conditions, etc. This text message function will undoubtedly facilitate inter-vessel communication.

Listen-Only Mode As a special feature, the SKANTI UAIS 2100 has the possibility for a Listen-Only Mode. Via the menu structure of the KDU, the UAIS transmitter can be switched off, which disables the automatic transmission of AIS information. Other AIS equipped vessels can thus not identify the vessel. However, the transponder will continue to receive all information transmitted from other AIS equipped vessels or base stations. The Listen-Only Mode is highly suitable for vessels operating in situations where anonymity is required, such as Coast Guard, Navy and environmental surveillance. New IMO Safety Standards The IMO has introduced new requirements for safety equipment on board: According to Resolution MSC.74 (69), Annex 3, all SOLAS vessels must install AIS transponders between the years 2002 and 2004, according to the pre-defined deadlines for different categories of ships mentioned below. Deadline July 1, 2002 July 1, 2003 July 1, 2003* July 1, 2004 December 31, 2004

IMO Requirements apply for: All newbuildings constructed on or after All passenger ships Tankers of all sizes Vessels of 50,000 and greater gross tonnage All other vessels covered by SOLAS

*Not later than the first survey for safety equipment on or after July 1, 2003

Summary of US Regulations, based on the IMO requirements The Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 applies for: Self-propelled commercial vessels more than 65 ft Passenger ships (size not yet decided) Towing vessels more than 25 ft and more than 600 hp Other vessels as may be determined by the Coast Guard through regulation. Deadlines All newbuildings built on or after All SOLAS passenger ships and all tankers and towing vessels moving a tank vessel on or after All other affected vessels on or after January 1, 2003 July 1, 2003 December 1, 2004

Interface to Display Systems The SKANTI UAIS 2100 is a single talk - multi listener system, making the transponder very flexible and easy to interface with various displays systems. In addition to displaying data on the SKANTI KDU 2100, the received data can thus be displayed on systems such as ECS, ECDIS and ARPA radars. Interfacing with other advanced systems makes it possible to display vessels as AIS icons on the ECS/ECDIS maps or as targets on the ARPA radar. The SKANTI KDU 2100 can display the thirty nearest vessels graphically. This exceeds by far the minimum requirement from IMO, which is display of data from the three nearest vessels within VHF range. Interface to Navigational Equipment By means of the dedicated sensor ports on the SKANTI UAIS 2100, it is possible

to interface with different kinds of navigational equipment. Sensor 1 Sensor 1 is for input and output. An external GPS/D-GPS is normally connected to this sensor and is the main source of position information. However, if input from this equipment fails, the built-in 12-channel GPS serves as backup and will automatically take over the transmission of the vessels position. Sensors 2 and 3 Sensors 2 and 3 are for input only. They are available for connection of additional instruments, such as gyro compass, speed log and ROT sensors. Information from these sources is included in transmissions to AIS receivers, further enhancing the level of surveillance of traffic in the area.

Differential information can be fed to the DGNSS port to obtain D-GPS position accuracy. AIS Channels The two VHF receivers and the VHF transmitter are, as standard, tuned to the assigned AIS channels 87 and 88. In areas where other AIS channels are used, the transponders channel 70 DSC receiver automatically switches to the required local AIS frequencies. The DSC message to switch channels is broadcast by local shore authorities. Antenna Requirements SKANTI UAIS 2100 requires connection to only one VHF antenna and one GPS antenna. The transponder can receive both GPS and DGPS signals.

The Universal Automatic Identification System from SKANTI is a complex system with extensive flexibility that allows interfacing with other on-board systems.

Transmission within VHF range The transponder automatically transmits and receives data to/from all AISequipped vessels or base stations within VHF range. The technology used for this highly advanced automatic communication is SOTDMA (Self-Organized Time Division Multiple Access). It uses the extremely accurate standard time references supplied via GPS signals to synchronize data transmission from multiple users - thus preventing interference and loss of information. The GPS provides both the universal time reference and the positioning data for each vessel. The SKANTI UAIS 2100 has been prepared for connection to a satellite terminal, e.g. an Inmarsat-C. This feature is useful when access to a vessels data is needed from shore through a satellite service.

The integrated transponder system consists of the following units: Two VHF radio data receivers One VHF radio data link transmitter One DSC Channel 70 receiver One 12-channel GPS receiver One main computer unit One interface module for external equipment Display of Information To present the information, an external keyboard display unit must be connected to the transponder. The SKANTI KDU 2100 has been designed to interface with the SKANTI UAIS 2100 and to meet the requirements for an easy-to-use keyboard display unit. The large graphical display presents the data of the nearest thirty vessels. Additional information is available by scrolling or accessing sub-menus. The SKANTI KDU 2100 can also be used for manual input of messages concerning voyage or safety and for operation of AIS and data selection.
