Volume 13, Number 12

Yo u A i nt S ee n No t hi n Yet !
Jesus answered and said to him, "Because I said to you, 'I saw you under the fig tree,' do you believe? You will see greater things than these" (John 1:50). Faith (believing something) is a strange characteristic in us. Sometimes we will do it with the least amount of clear evidence. At other times, we will remain skeptical even in the face of overwhelming proof. We are just kind of funny that way. So, when Nathaniel was impressed with Jesus immediate recognition of him, he believed. There must have been something in Jesus knowledge of Nathaniels life and whereabouts that impressed him. He immediately declared to Jesus, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel! It would appear that it didnt take much, or at least long, to get Nathaniel to turn from questioning if such a one could come out of Nazareth to the point of believing that this Jesus really is the fulfillment of the Law and prophets. It is Jesus follow-up observation that deserves to catch our attention. In essence, He told Nathaniel, This small thing may have impressed you, but you havent seen anything yet! (Russs paraphrase). We are fairly easily impressed. We generally come to some belief with ease. There is a part of each of us that wants to believe what appears to be good and true. We hear the message. We see the world. We recognize our temporary nature. We long for more. We want to believe. We want to believe in something good. We hear the words. We visualize the events. We weep at the cross, and rejoice at the empty tomb. These things are good and we believe. Jesus reminds us, The best is yet to be! Russ
