Lab1: Separation of Ammonia and Water 1.

2012

PROCEDURE

Methodology for process separation of ammonia and water using Aspen Plus:

1. First, the Aspen plus user interface is opened and Aspen plus blank simulation is chosen. 2. Condenser, flash vessel (phase separator), and valve models is dragged one by one from the unit operation model toolbar at the bottom of process flow sheet onto the flow sheet. 3. All streams from each unit operation models are connected. Each stream and model block is renamed. 4. Setup, components, properties, streams, and blocks inputs from data browser are filled with related information and values. 5. Next button is pressed as for running the simulation process.

THEORY

In this modelling and simulation lab1: Separation of ammonia and water, the SRK Equation of State fluid package is used as physical property method. SRK is a short form for SoaveRedlich-Kwong equation. The major use of SRK equation is to utilize the (SRK) cubic equation of state for all thermodynamic properties with option to improve liquid molar volume using volume correction.

As mentioned in Aspen physical property system, when using the SRK method, it is best to select STEAMNBS as the free-water method. This due to the fact that NBS steam table provides greater accuracy and SRK is designed to work with it. Besides, the enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs energy, and molar volume of water are calculated from the steam tables. In addition, the total properties are mole fraction averages of these values with the properties calculated by the equation of state for other components. Fugacity coefficient is not affected. SRK equation is recommended for gas-processing, refinery, and petrochemical applications.
