QUANTUM maX system

The QUANTUM maX* gravel-packing system can improve reliability and functionality in all aspects of fracand gravel-packing applications. Based on years of experience in reservoir and production engineering, the QUANTUM maX system is designed to handle the dynamic conditions experienced during the treatment application as well as throughout the life of the well. The system includes the QUANTUM* X hydraulically set packer, the service tool and the highperformance circulating housing. The packer, service tool and circulating housing were developed in parallel engineering processes to ensure that all of the components met the established criteria for reliability and efficient performance. All QUANTUM maX products are manufactured to the high Schlumberger QHSE standards and are fully traceable. The QUANTUM X packer can be configured to meet NACE specification MR 01 75 for stress cracking resistant metallic materials.

barrel slips effectively distribute axial loading and minimize casing stress. The barrel slip design provides added support area behind the slip to provide a tighter grip on the casing wall and increase load-carrying capability. It also protects the casing from excessive loading and provides positive retraction during retrieval. The location of the slip below the packer element provides maximum protection from debris fouling. Rotational-locking packer components facilitate emergency milling operations.

QUANTUM X packer
The QUANTUM X packer is a rugged high-performance gravel-pack and production packer. Based on the reliable, field-proven QUANTUM packer design, the QUANTUM X packer improves and optimizes operations in critical performance parameters including differential pressure and temperature, load-bearing capability, torque-through rating, and internal sealing reliability. The packer is deployed on a gravelpack service tool, set with tubing-toannulus differential pressure, and can be retrieved on drillpipe with a retrieving tool. The packer features a high-pressure element designed for increased performance and durability. It also has an energy-retaining setting mechanism that maintains the maximum amount of the setting force delivered by the service tool. The QUANTUM X packer incorporates fewer mechanical parts. A 40% reduction in parts from other designs makes it more debris tolerant, and with only 2 O-ring seals, the QUANTUM X packer significantly reduces potential leak paths. Large-area, single-piece

QUANTUM maX service tool

The QUANTUM maX service tool was specifically designed to address highperformance gravel- and frac-packing applications in a variety of stimulation optimization and sandface completions. The QUANTUM maX service tool has three main positions:

Extensive erosion lab testing was an important part of the successful design of the service tool. Critical design parameters were identified and utilized in a continuous improvement process that focused on

Circulating housings

The circulating housings are designed to facilitate the overall operation of the QUANTUM maX system. Each housing is integral to a particular service tool configuration. During installation, assembly and treatment, the housings provide sufficient diameter for all service tool functions as well as a physical interface between the screen system and the QUANTUM X packer. To optimize the design, key components of the circulating housings have also undergone extensive flow testing in the Schlumberger erosion lab. These key components are the seal bore,

slurry exit port with a port closure sleeve and indicating, or set-down, collar.
Port closure sleeve

Configuration

A locking port closure sleeve snaps in and out of an open and closed position. This system is tested and designed to remain open during slurry placement under extreme flow rates (to 50 bbl/min). The sleeve is designed to lock closed when the service tool is extracted. This eliminates accidental reopening during subsequent operations.

The QUANTUM maX system is integrated in a unique configuration to eliminate assembly errors. Component spacing is engineered to strategically position each piece in the correct position relative to the service tool.

Careful analyses are performed during the design process.

The QUANTUM maX system is designed for hostile and demanding environments.

Skilled engineers and technicians carefully prepare equipment to be tested in the test facility at the Schlumberger Reservoir Completions Center.

Design parameters
QUANTUM maX design enhancements were implemented only after the components passed a comprehensive series of integrated system field tests with high-performance standards. To meet these standards and provide operational reliability, Schlumberger engineers concentrated on key design parameters.
Torque

Final check on screens before installation.

QUANTUM maX systems are designed with a 15,000 lbf torque rating. A unique locking mechanism interlocks the service tool component to the packer to allow right-hand torque transmission. If rotation is required during the bottomhole assembly (BHA) installation, the locking mechanism ensures that the entire system acts as a unified assembly.
Collapse resistance

Housings are designed to withstand a minimum collapse pressure of 10,000 psi, which can occur after a screenout pressure spike during a frac-pack job.
Configuration

The designed system configuration strategically positions key components for optimum performance. The design includes
"

modular service tool components that can be reconfigured without compromising system spaceout minimal flow angles and unique flow patterns that greatly reduce erosion in the crossover, circulating housing and casing a port closure sleeve positioned to direct the slurry flow path to minimize erosion, preventing system malfunction.

Antisticking and erosion

The geometry and metallurgy of the systems design help to maximize the performance of the service tool when handling high-rate slurries and to facilitate the removal of the tool.

Qualification testing

Loading the QUANTUM X packer into the autoclave for ISO V-3 testing.

QUANTUM X packers undergo qualification testing that complies with ISO 14310 V-3 standards. In addition to ISO qualification testing, Schlumberger conducts a rigorous series of functional tests to ensure the packers perform reliably in demanding environments. Parameters for ISO qualification testing include
" "

gas or liquid test medium pressure cycles of 15-min duration with a minimum of 2 pressure reversals above and below the packer temperature cycles between the minimum and maximum rated temperature axial stress cycles to 400,000 lbf used for QUANTUM X tests minimum setting force required to set the QUANTUM X packer.

"

"

"

In addition, the QUANTUM maX system must meet internal Schlumberger standards including
"

packer millup testing to ensure the assembly is securely locked and the packer is easily millable if required. service tool to packer torque testing to 15,000 ft-lbf element flow-by testing vibration and shock testing to 250 G.

Performance envelope

Each size QUANTUM X packer has a performance envelope defining its operating boundaries. The envelope describes the safe operating range of pressure from above and below the sealing element, the pressure forces along the X-axis, axial loading and the mechanical forces along the Y-axis. This helps the completion engineer compare the expected performance of the packer against the dynamics of the job with respect to temperature, pressure and axial load fluctuations. The system performance parameters are also matched to changes in long-term reservoir characteristics for reliable performance long after the job is completed.

The envelope describes the safe operating range of differential pressure and axial loading.
