RUNNING AND HANDLING PROCEDURES

Maximum benet from your tubulars may be obtained by employing a TenarisHydril Field Service Representative during your inspecting, running and pulling operations. Contact your local representative for assistance, or go to www.tenaris.com/tenarishydril for locations and contact information.

4. Inspect all thread and seal areas for damage.

the thread locking compound to the large step of the pin thread only and apply running compound on small step of the pin and metal seal area at the back of the box. Avoid applying thread-locking compound on any metal seal area.
B. For Wedge connections, apply thread-locking

cleaning solvents.

tools on location, such as: pup joints, crossovers, oat equipment, stabbing guides, handling plugs, single-joint elevators, etc. Verify interchangeability with size, weight and connection type.
2. Ensure that a safety clamp (dog collar) is correctly sized

Stabbing
1. To prevent damage from accidental mishandling, the pin

thread protector should not be removed until the joint is ready to stab.
2. While the pin is hanging in the derrick and the box is

and in serviceable condition. It should be used above the oor slips until there is enough weight to properly set the slips or as long as the back-up tongs are required. A minimum 1" space is recommended between the bottom of the safety clamp and the top of the slips. The clamp should be set a minimum of 2" below the box thread length. Do not set the clamp over the box thread.
3. Slip-type elevators are recommended. Check elevator

suspended in the rotary table, remove the pin protector and handling plug. Clean and re-inspect the connections if conditions warrant.
3. Check centerlines of the suspended pin over the box,

making adjustments if necessary. If misalignment is excessive and cannot be corrected, CHROME RUNNING PROCEDURES may be required.
4. Precautions must be taken to keep the running

setting plate for proper operation. Elevators should not be set on the upset or connection area.
4. Collar-type elevators are suitable for use on coupled

compound free of contaminants.

5. Apply a thin, even coat of running compound (thread

When running integral or special clearance coupled connections, ensure elevators are bored to the appropriate diameter and are used in conjunction with a handling plug. NOTE: If a pick-up chain or line is used to hoist the joint into the derrick, it must be double wrapped. The chain or line must be secured in a manner which prevents its shifting up over the box. The handling plug ange or coupling face cannot be expected to prevent the chain or line from slipping completely off the joint.

Handling
1. Handle all tubulars with thread protectors in place. 2. If tubulars are to be left on the rack for an extended

period of time prior to running, apply a suitable compound to the thread and seal areas. Place clean, damage-free thread protectors on all connections.
3. Any accidental mishandling is cause for reinspection of

torque values.
3. During make-up, pipe must be vertical and allowed to

spin freely, which may require slacking off or unlatching the elevator.

Lowering
1. Tubulars should be picked up and lowered carefully.

Care should be exercised in setting oor slips to avoid shock-loading the string.
2. Ensure elevator slips are set well below connection area. 3. Keep handling plug in the box connection until the joint is

approximately one turn prior to connection shouldering. For CB connections that have installed rings, run in low gear during entire make-up.

Standing Back / Laying Down

1. Handle all tubulars with protectors in place. 2. Using a mustache brush, re-distribute the existing running

dope, mud and corrosive uids. Apply storage compound and install clean, undamaged thread protectors. Practices consistent with API RP 5C1 are recommended. NOTE: Any damaged connections also require protection. After inspection, the damage may be eld repairable. Failure to apply protectors or storage compound may render the connections unsuitable for repair and the whole joint as scrap.
3. Unserviceable connections must be properly marked. 4. Annual inspection of pipe and connections is recom-

compound on the connection when standing back for extended periods.

3. Apply a clean, undamaged thread protector to the pin

end and stand back on platform. The protector should be on straight and tight.

CHROME RUNNING PROCEDURES

Non-carbon or chrome pipe has a higher thread galling characteristic than more standard carbon grade pipe. The design of TenarisHydril connections helps to reduce galling, and the procedures that follow will help ensure maximum performance. When running chrome pipe, all procedures found in the bulletin should be followed, substituting these Chrome Running Procedures where applicable. It is best practice to employ a TenarisHydril Field Service Representative during the running and/or pulling of chrome pipe. Contact your local representative for assistance, or go to www.tenaris.com/tenarishydril for locations and contact information.

RUNNING
1. Check for traveling block and rotary hole alignment. If

misalignment is excessive, an adjustment must be made. Most chrome connection make-up problems are caused by poor allignment.
2. The use of a weight compensator is recommended to

facilitate hand make-up.

3. Before stabbing, any shiny areas should be sprayed

lightly with moly coat spray. Ensure running compound is clean and spread thinly and evenly on both pin and box connections.
4. Do not use power tongs for spinning the connection.

Make-up the connection by hand using a strap wrench and a steady pulling motion. Only after the connection is hand tight should the power tongs be engaged to apply the nal make-up torque. Do not jerk on the connection.
5. When making up by hand, torque developed prior to

PRE-RUNNING
1. Drift using a nonmetallic drift mandrel. 2. Avoid excessive or vigorous cleaning. 3. After cleaning, apply a thin, even coat of moly coat spray

shoulder contact is an indication of misalignment. Rotation should be stopped and reinitiated only after the misalignment has been corrected.
6. In the initial stages, monitor make-up and rotation speed for

to any shiny areas of the pin metal seal.

4. Apply a thin, even coat of running compound (thread form

outline will be clearly visible) to both pin and box using a mustache brush.
5. Reinstall clean thread protectors.

PULLING
1. After the initial break, rotate the connection turn,

unlatch the power tongs and continue breakout with a strap wrench.
2. Ensure the connections turn freely by hand following

the initial breakout.

3. Re-inspect both pin and box for any signs of galling or

damage. Spray moly coat on any shiny surfaces.
