First Indication of Sticking

Increased tension indicates that the tool is sticking, but is not stuck. KEEP MOVING UP-(within safe cable tension limits).

a.

Stop the winch PROMPTLY and attempt to lower the tool. Downward travel may open the bridge or shift the tool and allow passage next time up.

b.

Check the tension for -Total Bottom Hole Weight- (This is the weight of the cable (Twcm) + the tool (Wtm) at that depth).

Mark the cable again at exactly the same elevation, measure accurately the distance between the marks.

Mark the cable again at exactly the same elevation, measure accurately the distance between the marks.

Note the depth of the bridge and flag c. the line.

Repeat( II a) several times, if necessary, increasing tension only slightly each time to avoid hanging the tool in the bridge. Watch the flag and depth screen for indications of progress.

Read Considerations

e.

It is considered DANGEROUS AND UNWISE to release the cable suddenly after any pull in the above situation. There are no advantages to suddenly releasing tension. There are disadvantages- such as the possibility of a resulting KNOT in the cable.

Step II Considerations
Whenever the hole is directional or crooked, wall friction at deviations will reduce the effective length of free cable and falsely indicate a keyseat at the deviation, or at least shallower than the actual stuck point. Exact keyseat determination under this condition is impossible.

If the cable is keyseated, repeat Step I & Step II at other tensions. The keyseat II may be increasing or decreasing. Record the data gathered.
