ANNOUNCEMENTS:

No class tomorrow July 4th Homework that was assignment today in class is due next Tuesday July 10th o Do not begin until Thursday

NOTES BEGIN: 3 elements to pictures o Light Lines of sight/ projections/ visual rays

o Subject o Film/ memory card

A feature is a shape ANI is the standard for engineering graphics in the US ISC is the international standard for engineering graphics Picture plane o Side view of a subject o Everything appears to be the same size o Not 3 dimensional

Orthographic projections o When a stationary point is at infinity and the visual rays are parallel; when the visual rays are parallel, they are perpendicular to the picture plane o Orthographic Projections are a collection of 2-D drawings that work together to give an accurate overall representation of an object. o By definition for each element of an orthographic projection drawing you only present 2 of the three dimensions. Think of it as an observer look at one face, what do they see.

Date: 07-03-12 Class: EDSGN 100 Section 104 Lecture # and/or Topic (if applicable): Orthographic Drawings Instructor: WU Page 2 of 4 o Any orthographic projection drawing normally has three views Front view, Top view and side view (Right or left side view) Correct terminology is horizontal, frontal, and profile

Which views to present o Top view and bottom view are mirror images Shows depth and with Use top view in drawings

o Front view and rear view are mirror images Shows width and height Use front view in drawings

o Right view and left view are mirror images Shows width and height Use side that has the most detail

o General Guidelines Pick a Front View that is most descriptive of object Normally the longest dimension is chosen as the width (or depth) Most common combination of views is to use: Front, Top, and Side View

Date: 07-03-12 Class: EDSGN 100 Section 104 Lecture # and/or Topic (if applicable): Orthographic Drawings Instructor: WU Page 3 of 4 Glass box approach o Place the object in a glass box o Freeze the view from each direction (each of the six sides of the box) and unfold the box

Angles of projection o Third angle projection is normally used in the US while Europe uses the First Angle projection. Note the symbols at the bottom of each one which tell you which projection that you are viewing.

o These can be confusing to students. We are only highlighting the fact that there are different ways to represent projections. It is not expected for students to fully understand the differences.
