The contents of this catalogue were accurate when proof read. However as we are constantly fine tuning the ranges offered, there may now be changes to the range when printed. Please forgive us if there are any discrepancies at the time when you are trying to find your hooks. This catalogue was produced nine years after Partridge became part of the Mustad group, and we keep adding new pages to its history. Ad Swier, a truly good friend of Partridge and myself has supplied the cartoons for this catalogue. He is a great artist, pike fisherman, hook and fly designer, cartoonist and writer. Check his art on www.adswier.com/index2.html As the name implies, Partridge of Redditch originates from Redditch in Central England where the manufacturing was based in Mount Pleasant. Both the town and the district have been renowned for its specialized metal work

throughout many generations, needle making and hook making in particular. It is not easy to establish when this started, but according to one likely theory it began with the existence of a large monastery at Redditch. The monks were reputed to have been skilled artisans, and when Henry VIII dissolved the brotherhood the monks were taken in by leading Catholic families in the area, who obviously put their skills to use. From there processing of steel and specialised metal work were developed and refined. In the early days needle making and hook making went hand in hand. The techniques developed for making needles could be applied to making hooks as well. Steel wire was drawn in Birmingham and then sent out to needle and hook producers in adjacent towns such as Studley, Alcester, Arden and Redditch. In the middle of the nineteenth century Redditch seemed to establish itself as the main hookproducing area. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the transition from hand production to industrial manufacturing made Redditch famous for excellent fish hooks throughout the world. In this period they actually dominated the world market. The early history of Partridge is somewhat obscure. We know that the company was started on the basis of existing hook manufacturing shortly after the turn of this century, but no one knows the exact year any longer. What we do know, however, is that it is the only British sport hook manufacturer who survived from those early days until the beginning of 2000 when it was moved to its sister company: Mustad in Singapore. Partridge of Redditch bears The name of its founder, Albert Partridge. He bequeathed the firm to his son Ted, who in turn sold the company to Alan Bramley in 1970, when none

of his children were interested in taking over the company. Alan Bramley further developed the company, and in the 1970s he extended the production to include exclusive split cane rods as well as continuing to develop and improve hook production. Due to him Partridge of Redditch has become an internationally acclaimed fish hook brand. The latest phase of the history of Partridge of Redditch was initiated in 1996. Then the Norwegian hook manufacturer O. Mustad & Son acquired Partridge of Redditch from Alan Bramley. As far as Mustad is concerned, one might say that the circle had been closed. When O. Mustad & Son started their production of fish hooks in the 1870s, they soon realised that the hooks they were manufacturing were not good enough for the market. The founder, Hans Mustad, then summoned specialists from Redditch, England, to help him solve the problems. They were specialists in tempering, design and fly-tying. Partly thanks to Redditch expertise, Mustad is today the leading

manufacturer of fish hooks in the world. As part of the Mustad group, Partridge will still continue to exist as a specialist brand and be an independent alternative in the market place Partridge of Redditch continues its co-operation with fly-fishers and sport fishermen all over the world and keep its obligations to the continuously increasing number of fans who, throughout several generations, have been enchanted by the magic of our Finest Handmade Fish Hooks. A FEW WORDS ABOUT OUR HOOKS

DESIGN Designed in consultation with experienced anglers. QUALITY WIRE Made out of very high carbon steel wire. STRONG SHARP POINTS Strong needle ground points with a carefully shaped geometry for the sharpest point. For some ranges we have used our own "Flashpoint" technique to perfect the points. FORGED BENDS The majority have forged bends for extra strength. NEAT EYES Carefully formed eyes, tightly closed. SUPERB TEMPER All hooks are heat treated to get maximum benefits out of the high carbon steel wire we use. INSPECTION Highest level of inspection ensures superb quality is maintained. FINISHES Black is a very popular finish for most specimen hooks, although some of our hooks are still in the traditional bronze colour. Black nickel is becoming more and more popular for many types of fishing. Our Grey shadow hooks have a "Niflor" finish. Black Nickel is a relatively new coating on fish hooks. The black is quite shiny, and hooks coated with Black Nickel are chemically sharpened which gives an extremely sharp point.

TROUT
STREAMER AND LONG SHANK FLY HOOKS
Partridge fly hooks for streamer, bucktail, attractor, fry, sculpin and other long shank patterns. These are for trout, but are also used for sea trout, steelhead, salmon and pike flies. Some of these hooks are suitable for longer nymph imitations. Quite a number of Partridge salmon and steelhead single hooks can be used for long flies for trout.

FLASHPOINT
We form the points of each hook with our normal needle grinding method. The wire then goes throughout all the other stages to make it into a finished hook and it is then heat-treated. After that the hooks go through a process in which a chemical attacks the surface. The thinner parts of the wire are affected and, in particular, the point. The chemical smoothes or "eats away" the metal and, in effect, refines the point. This is quite a critical operation because if the chemical sharpening goes on too long it will eventually dull the point and may weaken the barb. Furthermore, if the chemical attacks one side of the point more than the other then the point will be weakened. Finally, it is important to remember that chemical sharpening will not make a weaker point into a strong one. It is more likely to make a suspect point even weaker!

HEAVY NYMPH DOUBLE A double nymph hook that conforms to international rules and combines the traditional shape of a wet fly hook with the additional weight to get down to the fish Finish Black Nickel. PARTRIDGE STRAIGHT EYE STREAMER HOOKS About 1982 this hook was made as a prototype carp hook, but it was thought that it was too long and not really strong enough. It was at a time when lure hooks were being more widely used in the UK and it was recognised that this hook would be an excellent lure hook for such fly patterns with its long shank, its low water salmon bend and its straight eye. It was accordingly adopted as a lure hook. However, since lure is used to describe all types of mono-fly baits outside the UK the description lure was dropped and replaced by its present name. PARTRIDGE BUCKTAIL/STREAMER HOOKS This range of hooks arose from the forged long shank hooks which had been Partridges standard hook for all types of long shank flies. The hook was made out of heavier wire and incorporates a wide gape. This hook is now suitable for all types of traditional streamer, bucktail and long attractor flies. The wide gape makes it good for flies like muddler minnows and other larger bodied flies. Traditional down eye. Bronze finish.

ALBERT PARTRIDGE WIDE GAPE DOWN EYE HOOKS This was probably the first range of hooks which were specifically designed by Albert Partridge as fly hooks. They were made with two varieties - down eye and up eye.

The up eye version was dropped as an offset hook was introduced in the E series in 1993 with a finer wire. The down eye version is still widely used for wet flies and dries. It was field tested by Datus Proper in his book What the Trout Said, and came out on top of his list for strength. The Code A has a wide gape and an offset bend. Surprisingly it is not forged, but is made from medium weight wire which accounts for its strength. This range is normally used for wet flies and nymph imitations, but a number of experts recommended them as very strong and effective dry fly hooks. The bend is offset. Bronze finish.

The original name came from a Mr Sproat who went to Hutchinsons of Kendal (Hookmakers) about 1880 and persuaded them to make a hook of this shape. On April Fools day in 1980 the Managing Director of Partridge decided that the De Sproat hooks were developed by a Swiss Admiral of that name. The De Sproat hooks were specifically designed for fishing flies in glacial streams and they were fished upstream. The fishermen ran along the bank to keep the flies in their position.

DRY FLY HOOKS

The following shows you the various ranges of Partridge hooks that can be used for dry fly, trout and grayling patterns. Most of them are made out of fine wire, but one or two are medium weight hooks which can be used for heavily hackled dry flies, palmered or deerhair styles. Many of the light-wire hooks are good for emergers and certain nymphs. THE CAPTAIN HAMILTON L SERIES Captain Hamilton was a Scot who emigrated to New Zealand in about 1860. He fished regularly over there having stocked his nearby river with trout in about 1875. The fish in the New Zealand river grew to average over 2lb in weight. (He compares this with 132 trout taken on a fly in his youth - total weight just over 30lbs!). In 1904 Captain Hamilton published a book on Trout Fishing and Sport in Maoriland. Shortly afterwards he approached Hardys for them to supply a new range of hooks for the large trout in New Zealand. The main features of the hooks were: - An almost round bend - Point with neat barb - A wider gape to take a larger bite and hold the fish better.

This was probably the first range of hooks which were specifically designed by Albert Partridge as fly hooks. They were made with two varieties - down eye and up eye. The up eye version was dropped as an offset hook was introduced in the E series in 1993 with a finer wire. The down eye version is still widely used for wet flies and dries.

It was field tested by Datus Proper in his book What the Trout Said, and came out on top of his list for strength. The Code A has a wide gape and an offset bend. Surprisingly it is not forged but is made from medium weight wire which accounts for its strength. This range is normally used for wet flies and nymph imitations, but a number of experts recommended them as very strong and effective dry fly hooks. The bend is offset. Bronze finish.

Peter MacKenzie-Philips started his fly fishing business on the success of the Yorkshire Fly Body hooks. They captured the imagination of the fly tyers throughout the world and gave Peter a boost in 1973. Slowly they lost their initial impact and it was not until they were slightly redesigned in 1991 that they became somewhat popular again. The redesign incorporated a larger hook which made it easier to hook and hold a fish. The Fly Body hooks are best used for upwinged dry flies or for hooked patterns. The Yorkshire Fly Body hook will enable you to tie better balanced dry flies, with a better chance of hiding the hook. Dressing flies on Fly Body hooks is a two stage operation. Put the hook in the vice with the eye to the left. Start the thread on the point of the body, and tie in the tails and body materials. Complete the body, working to the left, until the top of the shank is reached, tie a half-hitch and then take the hook out of the vice. Put the hook into the vice with the eye pointing to the right, and complete the fly in the normal way.

They were offset because Vince felt that they hooked better, and they had a down turned eye which he felt allowed him to move the fly on the water in the right way. He strongly recommended tying them on with a turle knot which he believed did not lengthen the fly. They have a Bronze finish and a wide gape.

OLIVER EDWARDS NYMPH/EMERGER HOOKS Oliver Edwards recommends these hooks in his book Masterclass. They were developed specially for his small nymph and emerger patterns, but they are also good for dry flies. The Silver finish reflects the colours of the subsurface world of the Trout and Grayling. Straight eye.

SWEDISH DRY FLY HOOKS For all types of dry fly patterns normally tied upside down. The Swedish dry fly hooks were designed in Sweden by Nils Eriksson and Gunnar Johnson who were well known Swedish fly tyers. Partridge first made them in 1979. Gary Lafontaine in his book Caddis Flies recommends them for a variety of Caddis (Sedge) dry fly imitations. Forged wide gape bend. Bronze finish.

JOHN VENIARD GRUB/SHRIMP HOOKS These grub/shrimp hooks were derived from a small fine-wire plain shank hook which was used in Italy for plastic bloodworm imitations. John Veniard, the world famous fly tyer, and author, recognised their versatility, when Partridge developed them as fly hooks in 1976. They were given a down eye with an offset bend which made them good hooks and suitable for all types of grub, shrimp, curved body and some emerger patterns. Bronze finish.
