Washing Feet in 2013 by Rev. Justin Gung, Minister of Families & Young Adults
We are squarely in Lent, the liturgical season that culminates in the highest and holiest days of the Christian calendar. One of these days is Maundy Thursday. On the original Maundy Thursday long ago, Christ gathered with his disciples a final time before his execution and burial. He, their leader and teacher, would soon be separated from them. How do you think he spent the precious little time that he had with them? The book of John gives us the invaluable perspective of one who was sitting on the front row: "He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him" (13:4-5). Washing feet was a menial task, reserved only for lowly servants. It was not at all fitting for someone of Christ's station! But in a stunning reversal, he, their master, became their servant. He, the first, became the last. He, the greatest, became the least. The book of John gives a brief, but powerful statement about this act: "Jesus showed them the full extent of his love" (13:1).
How often do we hear, "Why doesn't somebody?" Well, Somebody does. On the first Friday of each month, the Super Somebodies meet to complete work projects around the church campus. Led by a dynamo named Steve McHugh, they do whatever it takes to keep the property in excellent condition, which saves money that can then be directed to outreach ministries. But what if there's a need unrelated to the church building? Susan Batson, who leads the work of the Heavenly Helpers, says, "We're committed to caring for both our church members and community members. The projects that we do are many and varied and require a range of skills. We might paint, build a handicap ramp, complete minor home repairs or yard work, or drive someone to a doctor's appointment." According to Susan, the bottom line is this: "We'll do anything for anyone." Finally, I highly recommend picking up a hammer at Nashville Tools for Schools. Founded by a church member named John Carpenter, this group serves the Metro Nashville Public School System. Like most public school systems, ours has more need than material wealth, so John and his "band of merry men" complete construction projects for local schools - desks, shelves, lockers, and more. In everything, this group not only provides service with a smile, but also a good hearty laugh.
This month, Woodmont Christian Church partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build a three-bedroom home for a man named Randall Lewis. Maybe you saw his story featured on the local news! Not so long ago, an addiction to drugs and alcohol had him living on the streets of Nashville. But through agencies like Room In the Inn, Goodwill, and Friends, if Christ isn't above serving others, then how can Habitat for Humanity, the grace of God touched his life. Now a changed man, Mr. Lewis will soon have a home we be? If Christ isn't above dressing as a humble servant, then and the dignity that comes with it. From homelessness to how can we not trade our suits and ties for overalls and tool belts? If Christ isn't above washing feet, then how can we home-ownership! Hallelujah! refuse to get a little messy ourselves for the benefit of others? One day, I visited the worksite and saw all that the church Consider this your personal invitation to one of these small was doing to serve this man. I was reminded yet again that Woodmont Christian Church is a church full of servants, and groups: the Super Somebodies, the Heavenly Helpers, and I felt an overwhelming sense of pride. I felt proud of the Nashville Tools for Schools. He who washed the disciples' excellent work being done for someone who until recently feet says, "If I, then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed was just a stranger. I felt proud to be associated with a church your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I that does so much good in its community. I felt proud to be have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you" (13:14-15). Say, "Yes, Lord, I will follow!" one of your pastors. and discover how blessed it is be a blessing to others! But service need not be a once-a-year thing! Why wait until next year's Habitat for Humanity project to serve? The church has several small groups whose sole purpose is to serve and who do so all year long - winter, spring, summer, or fall. The Super Somebodies, the Heavenly Helpers, and Nashville Tools for Schools are but a few examples.

Lately I have been stressing myself out, privately noting all the ways I am failing to capture my seven-month old daughter's milestones or to create traditions for her. I carry around guilt for working full time outside of our home, for being away from her so much of the week, for taking work calls at odd hours of the day. I tag things on Pinterest I want to make for her and make lists of experiences I want to share with her instead of just being present in the moment to sing a song or to babble sweet sounds back to her. Self-imposed pressures and feelings of worry and guilt are paired with the We all have a daily grind we have to get through. About the Instructor: Katie Noss began her practice of Yoga ten years ago, following the birth of her twin daughters. It was during her first Yoga class with Karen Renner, a knowledgeable and inspiring teacher, that she became hooked. Intrigued by the vast physical possibilities of this ancient art/science while simultaneously appreciating the inner spiritual awareness a yoga practice fosters, she pursued her teaching certification. In 2007 she gradated from The Yoga School in Nashville and began teaching public classes as well as private sessions. Katie believes that yoga is for everyone, and whether young or old, in shape or out, new or returning to yoga, there is a spot for your mat in her yoga class.
