Return to calculator Step 1: Select the pre-modern award Use the drop down menu to select the pre-modern award that would have applied to the business prior to 1 January 2010. If you are not sure which pre-modern award applied, use the Award finder tool on the Fair Work Ombudsman website. Award Finder Return to calculator Step 2: Select the employment status Use the drop down menu to select whether the trainee is full-time or part-time. Please note, the calculator does not provide rates of pay for school-based trainees. Please contact the Fair Work Infoline for assistance with school-based trainees. Fair Work Infoline Return to calculator Step 3: Select the training package Use the drop down menu to select the training package that includes the qualification the trainee is undertaking. Qualifications are grouped into training packages based on industries. If you do not know the name of the training package, contact your Registered Training Organisation or Australian Apprenticeships Centre to find out. Return to calculator Step 4: Select the certificate level Use the drop down menu to select the certificate level (I, II, III) of the qualification the trainee is undertaking. You can find the certificate level on your training contract. It is included in the qualification name. For example, the Certificate II in Retail qualification is certificate level II. Return to calculator Step 5: Select the number of years out of school Use the drop down menu to select the trainee's number of years out of school.

The years out of school are counted from 1 January each year. Any time between when the trainee finished school and 1 January the following year is not counted. A trainee is classed as a school leaver for the first full calendar year (1 Janaury 31 December) after they leave school. The years out of school increase to the next level on 1 January each year. For example, if a trainee completed Year 11 in November 2008 and left school, they would be classed as a school leaver from 1 January 2009 - 31 December 2009. For the period 1 January 2010 - 31 December 2010 the trainee's years out of school would be "plus 1". Return to calculator Step 6: Select the highest grade of school completed Use the drop down menu to select the highest grade of secondary school that the trainee has completed. Please note, the Year 10 grade applies to trainees who have completed Year 10 or below. Return to calculator Transitional rate After you have completed steps 1-6, the transitional rate that applies to your trainee will be displayed. If the calculator indicates that the transitional rate is not available, check that the date you have selected is before the current date. The calculator cannot calculate future transitional rates. If the calculator still indicates that the transitional rate is not available, please contact the Fair Work Infoline for assistance with finding the correct rate of pay for the trainee. The calculator provides rates of pay for most common trainee scenarios. However, there may be situations where the calculator cannot provide a rate. Please note, rates of pay may be updated on 1 July each year. Please check your rates of pay regularly. Fair Work Infoline Return to calculator
