The years out of school are counted from 1 January each year. Any time between when the trainee finished school and 1 January the following year is not counted. A trainee is classed as a school leaver for the first full calendar year (1 Janaury 31 December) after they leave school. The years out of school increase to the next level on 1 January each year. For example, if a trainee completed Year 11 in November 2008 and left school, they would be classed as a school leaver from 1 January 2009 - 31 December 2009. For the period 1 January 2010 - 31 December 2010 the trainee's years out of school would be "plus 1".
