TOTAL

PHYSICAL
RESPONSE

What is TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE or TPR?

TPR is based on the premise that the human brain has a biological program for acquiring any natural language on earth including the sign language of the deaf.

The process is visible when we observe how infants internalize their first language.

I am Dr. James J. Asher and I originated TPR.

TPR is based on the Comprehension Approach

ABOUT THE

EXPERIENCE

Now that we have observed the Total Physical Response Method

being used in a class, lets examine what we have seen. We will list our observations and then try to understand the

principles upon which the teachers behavior is observed.

REVIEWING THE TECHNIQUES

The major technique, as we saw in the lesson we observed, is the use of commands to direct behavior. Asher acknowledges that although this technique is powerful, a variety of activities is preferred for maintaining student interest. A detailed description of using commands is provided in the following pages.
