In our latest edition of Speak Up!, we look back at the past 2 months in Telok Blangah Toastmasters. Speak Up! is a bi monthly newsletter that shares the past happenings as well as tips for members and the public to learn more about communication and leadership success. It has certainly been a fulfilling 2 months with more new members joining us and being part of passionate about learning, contributing and growing. In this edition, we highlight the camaraderie developed and recognize the milestones that some of our members have reached. Enjoy!

Themes, Fun and Achievement

Congratulations to the new Competent Communicators We are happy for our club member Tan Teck Heng and Sergeant at Arms, Wong Yoke Yong who have put in their best to speak regularly and achieve their Competent Communicator Title this term. With strong commitment to the Telok Blangah Toastmasters, Teck Heng and Yoke Yong have been very active in helping out as an appointment holders during meetings. They have also been active in volunteering at other clubs too. Congratulations and kudos to them who serve as role models to keep improving though volunteering and speaking.

International Speech and Table Topics Contests On February 28th 2013, our club organized the International Speech and Table Topics Contests. It was that time of the year where members get to challenge themselves and vie to represent the club at the Area level. Speakers Wekie Tay, Tan Yi Shu and Kelvin Koh gave their best for the International Speech by speaking about compassion, curiosity and character. Wekie Tay, Kelvin Koh and Claudia Cheng tackled the table topics with confidence and poise. Ultimately, Club Mentor Wekie Tay won both contests and will go on to represent our club at the area level. We wish him all the best and we know he will do us proud! Club Officers Training 2 and Exco Outing 19th January 2013 was a day of get together to learn and celebrate for the Exco of Telok Blangah Toastmasters Club. The Exco attended the yearly Club Officers Training to learn more about the challenges of being a leader in Toastmasters and learn how to improve from this mid term onwards. The Exco also took time to get together and bond in an informal outing, getting to know each other better and celebrate the progress made so far in the term.

Chinese New Year Chapter Meeting Our Chinese New Year Chapter Meeting was a great night of celebration and fun. Sergeant at Arms Yoke Yong specially prepared Yu Sheng for everyone to usher in the New Year by tossing in good luck and happiness.

"International Speech and Table Topics" Contests Area Level
Contest season is here for Toastmaster Clubs in Singapore and all over the world. Our clubs contest ended in February but contest season doesnt end there. Club Champion DTM Wekie Tay will be representing our club in the upcoming Area Z2 contest. He will be contesting against the champions of the other 4 clubs in our area. Namely, Chua Chu Kang, MDIS, NOL and Frontier Toastmasters Clubs. Support Wekie and Learn too! This is definitely a great time to support Wekie and also get to learn from the other Club Champions and their winning speeches. We encourage you to come and view the contest or volunteer to be an appointment holder. Its FREE! Want to learn more about public speaking? In this new section, you can continue your education about communication and leadership. Here are some additional tips that weve carefully picked for you to learn and apply the next time you give a speech, network or just want to share tips about public speaking with someone. Enjoy! For this edition, we share some tips about How to Choose a Speech Topic and some tips related to getting ideas for your next speech. Below is a summary ideas shared during an Educational Talk given by our Club Mentor DTM Wekie Tay in our January Chapter Meeting.

Who is My Audience?
From What am I going to speak about to Who am I speaking to?. Pick a topic appropriate for the type of audience you are speaking to.

Nature of Speech
Is it an informative, inspiring, persuasive, entertaining speech? What type of speech do you want to give?

Objectives
What are the keywords in the project objectives? Look at the purpose too. E.g. Research Your Topic is more of an informative speech.

Subjects I Know Well

What are you passionate about? Learning something new recently? How about interesting personal experiences?

Which Focus will Interest the Audience?

Will you focus on the story? The statistics? The twist? Is it the subject matter that is interesting?

What Will The Audience Learn in the End?

What is in it for them? What can they become? Be specific with your message or call to action.

Title
Choose a compelling or interesting title that makes the audience look forward to your speech.
