10) By the end of grade 11, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, AND literary nonfiction in the grades 11-CCR text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. Quote o (SL.11-12.1) Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 11-12 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. Give a brief overview of page 144 as marked in the text. Students will create their own news editorial piece following a five paragraph format (opening, three bodies, and a closing), though they are encouraged to write more than that. o Using freewriting, students will brainstorm topics for their editorials. Students will get out a sheet of paper and write anything they want on it as long as they write something for two minutes. Students will then underline/mark/highlight a word or phrase they particularly like that they have written. Students will repeat this twice. After the 10 or so minutes this will take, students will pick one of their three marked words/phrases to be their topic. If the student desires, they can choose their own topic afterwards, unrelated to freewriting. o Teacher will outline on the board the five different paragraphs, and what each one means, and what should be in each paragraph (topic sentence, at least two detail sentences, and a closing sentence). o Teacher will also re-explain a thesis, as students should know what a thesis is, but a good refresher cant hurt. A thesis of course is a sentence (or two) that completely and totally encapsulates the essence of the essay/article/editorial. Teacher will encourage the students to start off with making a thesis sentence, but it is not necessary. There should be approximately 30-45 minutes left in class; students will have the rest of the time to work on their editorials and their lessons. The editorials are due on Thursday, and the lessons are due in two weeks time, on the 12th and 14th of March. o (W.11-12.2) Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content. Introduce a topic; organize complex ideas, concepts, and information so that each new element builds on that which precedes it to create a

unified whole; include formatting, graphics, and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.
