Frondly Yours

By Dania Erickson Based on a stitch from the illustrious A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns by Barbara Walker; Frondly Yours gets its name from the lacy leaf pattern. This hat is great for those in the midst of a Southern California winter. Also good for those looking forward to spring days that still have a chill in the air. I find that the decreases in the pattern really highlight the individual leaves, and give it a shamrock-like look when looking at it from the back. Depending on if you want a slouchier beret you can use the larger needles. A special thanks to my friend Lexi for being a lovely model much better than that pesky white Styrofoam one. Materials: US 7/4.5 mm circular needles US 9/5.5 mm circular needles and/or dpns (size US 10 / 6.5mm for slouchier beret style see last picture of black hat) 1 - 4 stitch markers (I like to have one after each repeat of the lace section, with a different stitch marker to differentiate the end of the row) Worsted weight yarn

Size: One size fits most adult heads. Special Stitches: ssk and pass: ssk return the resulting stitch to the left hand needle and with point of right-hand needle pass the NEXT stitch over it and off the needle; the sl the stitch back to the right hand needle. sl 1k2togpsso: slip 1 st wyib, knit 2 together, and pass the slipped stitch over (insert the point of the left-hand needle into the slipped stitch and draw it over the knit stitch and off the right hand needle)

yo: yarn over. Bring the yarn to the front of the work. In doing a yarn over before a purl stitch, simply wrap the yarn around the right hand needle before doing the purl stitch.

Notes on stitches: Instead of doing the ssk and pass, you can do a double decrease by slipping three stitches knit-wise and then knitting them all together through the back loop. For the K2 tog stitch and psso, you can simply knit 3 stitches together. ************************************************* With smaller needles, CO 80 sts. Make sure stitches are not twisted and join together, and place marker. Work in k2p2 rib for 10 rows. Change to size 9/5.5 mm needles for the rest of the hat: Increase rows: Row 1: *k4, kfb* to end (96 sts) Row 2: *yo, p1, k6, ssk and pass, yo, k1, yo, p2, yo, k1, yo, sl 1-k2tog-psso, k6, p1* to end. (12 sts) Row 49: *p1,k2* to end. (12 sts) Row 50: *p1, k2tog* to end. (8sts total) Cut yarn leaving a 6 tail. With tail threaded on yarn needle, draw tail through remaining stitches and pull to gather. Secure the tail to the inside (wrong side) of the hat. Weave in loose ends. *All rights to the pattern and design "Frondly Yours" are protected by copyright. Dania Erickson 2012.
