Purposes
This Guide, LG Product Support Tool, describes the using methods to use all functions, which
is provided in LGNPST, for user who wants to use LG Product Support Tool.

Scope

This Guide describes the using methods of LGNPST in details through one by one step. The
user does not need to have basic knowledge of LGNPST.

Audience
This Guide is designed for the programmer and developer. Thus, this guide assumes that the
reader is knowledgeable of basic concept and terminology about the device and does not
provide separate explanation for these topics. If you feel that contents of this guide are
difficult and requiring more detailed explanations, refer to the other related document.

This chapter describes installation method to let user know how to use LGNPST program and
includes general information such as minimum requirements, files which user should install,
phone connection method, and port setting method of phone to start LGNPST Program

Program Installation

1.1 Requirements for Program Installation


This section describes minimum requirements and recommended requirements for
installation. This section consists of two parts. The First part is for system requirements; the
second part is for setup requirements.

1.1.1 System Requirements


 CPU: Pentium III or higher processor recommended
 RAM: 1024 MB or greater recommended
 Operating System: Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP recommended
 Resolution: 1024 X 768 or higher recommended
 Port Communications: RS-232-C serial cable, USB cable or USB Converter cable (COM 1-
255) capable

1.1.2 Setup Requirements


 Data Cable or LT Cable should be attached between COM port and phone
 USB driver or USB Converter driver should be installed to use USB or USB Converter
cable
 A “Hardlock” or “Megalock” dongle key should be attached to the parallel (printer
LPT1) or USB port for LAB/Field level Professional LGNPST

Program Installation

1.2 Program Installation


This section describes what programs you need to install on your PC and procedure of each
program.

1.2.1 PST Program Installation

The “LG New Product Support Tool” (LGNPST) can be supplied via one CD-ROM and also
comes with a “Hard lock” dongle key, which must be attached to the PC’s parallel or USB
port for LAB/Field level LGNPST in order for the program to operate.

Caution
Make sure there is no other version of LGNPST installed on your PC. If there is a previous
version(LGNPST_Sprint, LGNPST_VMU, LGNPST_Boost) installed, please go to the
"Add/Remove Programs" menu in the Control Panel and un-install the LGNPST software
before re-installing.

1. Insert the CD in your CD-ROM Drive (typically "D:").


2. Find the corresponding .msi files for installing the main program.
3. Type the following command string in the "Run" dialog box and click OK

4. The setup file will configure Windows Installer to install the program.

5. Click Next.
6. The LGNPST End User License Agreement (EULA) appears. Please read the terms and
conditions. If you agree to terms and conditions, Select "I accept the terms in the
license agreement" and click Next to continue installation.

7. The files will be automatically extracted and installed.

Note
If you click cancel, program installation will be aborted.

8. When installation is completed, <InstallShield Wizard Completed> is displayed.


Please click Finish.

We recommend to reboot the PC after installation.

9. After installation is completed, the program is installed in the following location


Start Button -> Phone Flashing Applications => LG Electronics =>
LGnPST_Sprint_VMU_Boost

1.2.2 DLL Installation

This section explains how to install DLLs file on your PC.

Note
LX000 Model represents Sprint model.

1. Insert the CD in your CD-ROM Drive (typically "D")


2. Select RUN from the Windows "Start" menu.
3. To install all available DLLs, Type the following command string in the "Run" dialog
box and click OK in turn.

Caution
Please install correct DLL versions for your model.

4. The files will be automatically extracted and installed.

Note
We recommend to reboot the PC after installation.

1.2.3 Connection Setup


This section describes connection methods. There are three types of method to connect
mobile handset to your PC.

Note
In order to use LGNPST via USB cable, LG USB Driver needs to be installed in advance. For
more information on this, please refer next section.

Caution
Make sure the battery is fully charged prior to attempting software upgrade via device
battery. Loss of power during the upgrade process will result in a failed upgrade. The use of
the external power with cable is recommended.

For USB Cable


1. Connect one end of the provided USB Cable to a USB port on the PC and the other
end to the data port located on the bottom of the device. If the cable is correctly
connected, the red status light indicator on the USB Cable box will light up.
2. On the side of the USB Cable box, there is a special connector used to attach a
travel charger or cigarette lighter adapter to power the device during use.

For USB Converter Cable


1. Connect one end of the provided USB Converter Cable to a USB port on the PC and
the other end to the data port located on the bottom of the device. If the cable is
correctly connected, the red status light indicator on the USB Converter Cable box
will light up.
2. On the side of the USB Converter Cable box, there is a special connector used to
attach a travel charger or cigarette lighter adapter to power the device during use.

For Serial (RS-232-C) Cable


1. Securely connect one end of the provided Serial Data Cable to a serial port on the
PC and the other to the data port located on bottom of the device. Once the cable
is correctly connected, the red status light on the Serial Data Cable box will light up.
2. On the side of the Serial Data Cable box, there is a special connector used to attach
a travel charger or cigarette lighter adapter to power the device during use.
3. Attach the "hard lock" or "Mega lock" dongle to the computer’s parallel or USB port.

1.2.4 Getting Started

In this section, we will provide a quick overview of LGNPST to get you started. LGNPST can
be started in two ways.

Using Start Menu

1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start.


2. Select Phone Flashing Applications -> LG Electronics ->
LGnPST_Sprint_VMU_Boost

Please make sure that correct type of I/O cable is used (USB, USB Converter or RS-232-C
Serial Cable).

Shortcut icon on the Windows desktop is not created in installation process.

1.3 Port Settings


This section describes the procedure of installing device driver on windows to control the
device as the port of window.

1.3.1 How to install LG USB Driver

Caution
A Device must be connected through USB cable from this point on

1. Double click LGUnitedMobileDriver_S4981CANXXAP22_ML_WHQL_Ver_X.X.exe.

Note
LGUSBModemDriver is located on
D:\USB\True_USB_Driver\LGUnitedMobileDriver_S4981CANXXAP22_ML_WHQL_Ver_X.X.exe
We recommend you to install LG USB Driver version 3.5 or higher one.

2. Click Next to start installing LG USB Modem Driver onto your PC.

3. <Setup Status Window>is displayed on your PC. The files will be automatically
extracted and installed.

4. When installation is finished, the following window will be displayed. Please click
OK.

Note
If same of higher version is already installed on your PC, you can skip this process.
LG CDMA USB Modem, LG CDMA Composite USB Device and LG CDMA USB Serial Port drivers
will be installed automatically and LGNPST can be used via USB Cable.

1.3.2 How to install LG USB Converter Driver


This section describes the method of installing USB converter driver for handset.
1. Double Click LG USB Converter Driver_Ver.X.X.exe.

2. Click Next to start installing USB Converter Driver onto your PC.
3. <Preparing Setup Window> is displayed on your PC. The files will be automatically
extracted and installed.

4. If an incompatibility is issued with Windows XP, <Incompatibility Issue Window>


comes up at any point during setup. Always Click Continue Anyway. This dialog box
may come up more than once.

5. When installation is completed, following figure is displayed on your PC.


Click Yes, and then all programs will be closed and PC will be restarted promptly.
After the PC has been restarted, Mobile device can be used via USB Converter Cable.

1.3.3 How to connect the device through USB, USB Converter or Serial (RS-
232-C) cable

This section explains how to connect device to PC. After installing all applications, which you
need for coupling device and PC, user can connect device to PC.

1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start and then select Phone Flashing Applications =>
LG Electronics => LGnPST_Sprint_VMU_Boost

or, click Start and then select All Programs => LGnPST_Sprint_VMU_Boost

<LGNPST Main Window> is displayed as below.

The LGNPST Window is composed of Model list manager, Phone status window and
Provision window. You can see all available ports of models, which are automatically
detected. If a device is connected properly to a unused COM port, the information of
device is displayed in the phone status window.

2. On the LGNPST Window, Click File(F).


3. Select Select DLL and then <Select DLL Window> appear.

4. Check radio button, which you want to use DLL, and Click OK.

2.1 Main Function of LG PST (LGNPST)


The LGNPST Window is composed of Model list manager, Phone status window and Provision
window. Model List Manager lists up all connected devices. Status Window shows all
information of DLL and Handset. Provision Window provides the downloading functions such
as binary upgrade download, PRL download and etc.

2.1.1 Starting LGNPST


1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start. And then Select Phone Flashing Applications
=> LG Electronics => LGnPST_Sprint.

2.1.2 Menu Bar


The menu bar provides the function that allows you can go to each sub-menu by clicking.
Menu bar is composed of File, Provision, Data, Tool, and Help.

File
The "File(F) " menu provides "Select DLL" and “Exit”.

 Select DLL: This function enables to choose a DLL needed if the frame does not detect
a proper one.
 Exit: This function closes the LGNPST Program.

PST Functions

The " PST Functions(P) " menu supports short key definitions and allows to execute each
process.

 REFURBISH WITH SW DOWNLOAD: This is a shortcut menu to run the Refurbish SW


Download Function process.
 PRL UPDATE: This is a shortcut menu to run the PRL Update process.
 UPGRADE: This is a shortcut menu to run the Refurbish UPGRADE Function process.
 EMERGENCY: This is a shortcut menu to run the Emergency Function process.

Tool
The "Tool (T)" menu provides the ability to access extra functionality needed in order to
communicate with the handset but does not have a special classification. Currently there is
"Lock Code", "Reset", “Sound On” and “Load Serial Ports”.

 Lock Code: This functionality is used to get the lock code from the handset so the user
will be able to have access to their handset for proper usage.
 Reset: If a forced reset is needed for a particular handset due to un-expected idle
activity, then this functionality is needed to bring the handset back to an initialized
state for a process to be run.
 Sound On: This is the option which turns on/off the sound effects within the program
during execution. The default setting is checked "On". This can be easily turned off by
un-checking the option in the main menu.

 Load Serial Ports: This function is used to activate serial ports.

2.1.3 The Model List Manager

The above figure shows which models are available for download processes. And, it is
composed of 4 sections. Those are the following:
Model Number, COM Port, Process, and Status
The user is able to see the current status of all connected devices from the model list
manager. This provides information to the user which processes each device is going through
at any given time.
Example:
Model Name: LX000
Port: COM2
Process: REFURBISH, PRL WRITE, UPGRADE and etc.
Status: Stand By, Complete, Error, and etc.

2.1.4 The Phone Status Window

The figure 2-8 depicts detailed information of one particular handset, which is currently
connected to port. Clicking "Hide Phone info." button can hide the phone information. The
hidden status can be shown again by clicking “Show Phone info.” button.

Caution
Please confirm the correct DLL file is selected before attempting to execute any download
function.

The above figure is consisting of three areas. The first area displays information about the
version, associated DLL name, device’s compiled date to use the LGNPST Program with the
current device.

The second area displays the current device ESN, Digital, and analog device numbers, S/W
Version, S/W date info, PRL Version (if available) and ERI Version (if available)
The third area (lower) displays the specific info related to the received system, device
system state, additional programming, and hardware related items.

DLL Section

Version: The version of the DLL file available. Example) 0.0.9.0


File Name: Name of the DLL file being used
Compiled Date: Date that the DLL file is compiled

Handset

IMEI/MEID: The Mobile equipment identifier stored on the handset (Unique ID)
Mobile ESN: The electronic serial number stored on the handset (unique ID)
Phone Number: This is the phone number stored on the phone for the user.
Digital MIN: The min value in the format of a phone number
Analog MIN: The min value in the format of a phone number
Software Version: This shows the version of the binary
Compiled Date: The compile date for the handset software
Release Date: The release date for the handset software
PRL Version: The PRL version is displayed

The Refurbish with SW Download function reset the device back to original state when it was
shipped. Upgrading binary file is optional.

1. Click REFURBISH WITH SW DOWNLOAD Function.

3.4 Emergency Function


The Emergency function provides recovering the device from irregular status such as doesn’t
boot up the device. Emergency function is used on the Emergency mode.
To enter the Emergency mode, press keypad “5” in the device without battery and then
connect the download cable to the device.
But, the cable must be connected to power charger when connecting to the device.

If you correctly process emergency step, you can see "UNKNOWN” Model Name in Model List
Manager
