A complete teaching system with comprehensive experiments, data analysis, tutor's and student manuals if desired, and all instruments and controllers.

Studies hydrodynamics and mass transfer in liquid/liquid systems Dispersed light or heavy phase operation custom designed for technician/undergraduate teaching Complete visual monitoring of the process Easily operated and used No further development work necessary Suitable for project or research work

Specification
A QVF liquid/liquid extraction teaching system module comprising a 50mm diameter x 2000mm long pulsed extraction column with stainless steel perforated plates, 50 liter capacity light and heavy phase feed and storage vessels, duplex variable capacity

metering pump, and interconnecting pipework, all manufactured in borosilicate glass. Designed to study hydrodynamics and mass transfer in liquid/liquid systems. Supplied with all valves, controllers and supporting structure. Complete with an installation and maintenance manual and tool kit.

Experimental Capabilities

Observation of light and heavy phase dispersion, column flooding The effect of pulse volume and throughput on the transition and flooding points Determination of HTU Influence of liquid flowrates on extraction efficiency Influence of pulse volume on extraction efficiency

An Iodine/water/perchloroethylene acid system is used in the experiments. Many other liquid systems can also be investigated. The experiments are also designed to provide training in chemical plant control and operation.

Optional Manuals
The equipment can be supplied with the following manuals: Tutor's manual: The basis of a lecture course on extraction theory and practice. Also including operating instructions , experiments, typical results and answers to student questions. Student manuals provide the basics of extraction theory and practice with plant operating instructions. Experimental booklets provide step-by-step instructions for performing the experiments, data to be recorded and questions to be answered. Additional copies of the student manuals and experiment booklets can be reordered.

Description
The extractor comprises a vertical pulsed sieve plate column fitted with light and heavy phase setting zones. Light and heavy phases are pumped continuously from their feed vessels to the column by means of duplex variable capacity dosing pump where they are contacted countercurrently. The custom designed, variable capacity pulse unit fitted to the column varies the mass transfer rate within the extraction column by applying shear stress to the passing liquid streams. Interface level is controlled manually using a flexible pipe connection which allows light and heavy dispersed phase operation to be studied.

The extract and raffinate are collected in receiving vessels and suitably positioned sampling points allow samples to be taken for concentration determination of the phases. A mimic diagram is integrated with the equipment and ensures simple identification of valves and recording of plant variables. All major process items and pipework are manufactured from QVF borosilicate glass with other contact parts in PVDF, PTFE and stainless steel.
