Priest appeals to politicians not to campaign during Holy Week

TACLOBAN CITY A Church official here in Leyte had asked candidates this coming elections not to use the Holy Week for their political advancement but rather use the season for self-contemplation and meditation. Monsignor Bernard Pantin, parish priest of Our Lords Transfiguration Cathedral based in Palo, issued this call for local candidates after the first day of campaign falls under Holy Friday. This is a sacred ceremony and activity for us in the Catholic faith. This is a time for us to contemplate for all mistakes we had done and to renew our self in the presence of our Lord so what we church leader is asking for candidates is to set aside first their personal interests and concentrate in the betterment of their souls, Pantin said in an interview. The Church cannot and will not prevent any politicians to visit, witness and join Church activities, he added. The same call was also made by the Commission on Elections for candidates and their supporters this coming elections as the Synchronized National and Local Elections and Electoral Reforms Act bans campaigning on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. Violating this law is punishable with imprisonment from one to six years, disqualification from public to page 3

Rep. Evardone alarmed over alleged presence of armed groups in E. Samar

BORONGAN CITYEastern Samar Rep. Ben Evardone expressed his alarm over what he said presence of armed groups roaming around in the province that could affect the conduct of elections. Evardone, however, was quick to say that he could not really say if these groups of armed men belong to certain candidates or members of the rebel group, the New Peoples Army. (But the presence of these armed groups) made be a little bit worried, apprehensive even fearful. The holding of the elections here in Eastern Samar might be tainted with violence. Hopefully not, Evardone said. Evardone is seeking for a possible second term with outgoing Guiuan town mayor, Annaliza GonzalesKwan, as his rival for the lone congressional district of the province. The reelectionist solon said that he has already reported the matter to the Philippine National Police and the Philippine Army. Senior Supt. Allan Cuevillas, police provincial director for Eastern Samar, said that he already received such information. Cuevillas said that he has still validating the matter in coordination with the Philippine Army. We are coordinating with the Philippine Army on what to do on this matter. We dont tolerate any armed groups to roam around, the police official said. Evardone said that while he is fearful on the presence of these armed groups, he is confident that both the police and the Army would eventually neutralize their presence in the province. I have full trust and confidence in our law enforcer agencies like the military and the police that they will be able to neutralize these elements which are trying to subvert the will of the people, he said. He said that based on the intelligence report he has received, these armed men are going around to villages and directing his supporters not to vote for him and his allies but to the other camp. We want these elections be fair, just, honest and peaceful. We want the people to exercise their right to vote freely and in accordance with their conscience, Evardone said. For her part, GonzalesKwan said that she too received same information as she also urged the police and the Army to verify their presence in the province. I have been hearing about it but I am taking it with a grain of salt. But personally, I have yet to witness them. I can still go anywhere. I always believe Somebody up there. If its your time to go, you will go. That is my philosophy in life, Gonzales-Kwan said. (JOEY A. GABIETA)

PDEA arrests 2 suspected pushers

T A C L O B A N CITYThe Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) here in the region said it has arrested two notorious drug pushers in Baybay City. Liza Baoy, PDEA8 information officer, said that approximately 100 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride, otherwise known as shabu, were seized by combined elements of the agency and the Philippine National Police (PNP) during an entrapment operation past midnight of March 22. The buy-bust operation inside a pension house in Barangay Hipusngo, Baybay, Leyte has led to the arrest of Fernando Balagbis, alias Intoy, 43 years old and ranked number one in the Baybays AIDSOTF-LPPOs target list of drug personalities and Yolly Prieto, 34 years old, both residents of Baybay City, Baoy said. Baoy added the two were caught red-handed selling one sachet of shabu to a poseurbuyer inside the pension house. The duo also yielded to the authorities to page 8

four goals, newcomer Javier Patio delivered a brace, while Stephan Schrock and Carli de Murga contributed to the Philippines best scoreline since beating Timor Leste, 7-0, in November 2006. Both sides got off to a slow start before Younghusband connected in the 25th minute off a nifty pass from De Murga. He followed it up with a curling strike in the 30th before completing the work in the 34th as he was assisted by Paul Mulders in both successful attempts. Patio, who plays for a Thai professional team, was then aided by Younghusband and Schrock for his first international goal in the 45th. Schrock and Patio scored in the next 10 minutes. However, match officials suspended the match for an hour from the 65th minute because of the heavy downpour. Late in the first half, the game was also stopped because of a sudden power interruption at the stadium. Back in the game with a waterlogged pitch, Younghusband contributed in the 87th, while de Murga made it eight in the 89th. Mulders, meanwhile, will not be available for the next game after he was booked for a red card. It was a good team performance. We can be happy with the result. Our coach gave us the right words at half time and even the rain break. We respect everybody, and we didnt expect that big win, said Schrock. As punishment for snubbing the tournament due to unavoidable circumstances, Brunei will reportedly be forced to sit out in the next edition and pay fines. Citing tournament rules, The Brunei Times said on Saturday the AFC may extend the suspension depending on the gravity of the situation and/or damages. The sultanate will also have to return to the AFC any financial assistance that had been given to them by the AFC throughout the competition. (SUNNEX)

Philippine Azkals dump Cambodia

MANILA -- Showing no signs of let up, the Philippine mens national football team Azkals thrashed Cambodia on a rainy Sunday night, 8-0, in preparation for the battle with Turkmenistan for the automatic spot in the AFC Challenge Cup finals next year. Game time is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila, as the Philippines needed only a draw because of superior goal difference to advance to the main tourney in Maldives, along with first placers from four other groups and two-best second placed teams. I will probably go a little bit more on the safe side...nevertheless, we will go for a win and have smart tactics, said Azkals coach Michael Weiss when asked whether his squad will settle for a draw or victory against the Turkmen. T he w in overto ok Turkmenistans emphatic 7-0 rout of Cambodia at the opening day match last Friday. Brunei was supposed to battle the Philippines on the same day but a last-minute pullout pushed the Asian Football Confederation to give the sultanates opponents an outright three points. The Philippines and Cambodia squared off at Phnom Penh last November, which ended in a scoreless draw. But this was not seen four months later as Phil Younghusband netted

these technologies are high cost of technology, lack of awareness on existence of technology, and hesitance to shift from traditional farming methods. On the part of traders, they cannot earn the highest income they can from coconut because of the poor state of farm-to-market roads, and lack of affordable financing, the roadmap said. The blueprint drafted by stakeholders and published by NEDA said that processors are facing challenges of high standard imposed by foreign traders. The industry also noticed the lack of unity among stakeholders, which is detrimental in addressing inefficiencies in the entire production process. Producers are hindered of forming themselves into cooperatives because they do not appreciate the value of organizing. The disintegration among oil millers, limits their ability to promote their

interests, especially in dealing with export markets, the plan said. Experts, however, are eyeing new opportunities that will boost production increased competition, efforts to unify the sector, emergence of new thinkers, Samar road upgrading, existence of technologies, and potential to expand planted areas. The NEDA reported that the region is the countrys third largest coconut producing area with 417,786 hectares and 46.1 million coconut bearing trees. Average output volume was pegged at 1.7 billion nuts from 2009 to 2012. The plan has identified 368,524 coconut farmers. The region hosts 10 coconut oil mills with a capacity to process two billion nuts every year. Aside from copra processors, there are also six firms engaged in coco coir processing, an activated carbon plant, eight coco shell fuel processing plants, and two coco water vinegar makers. that day, they can reschedule it to other day, he added. On the forthcoming Transition Commission en banc meeting

We are pleased to announce that the first en banc meeting of the 15-member Transition Commission has been set in the first week of April. The Transition Commission, whose composition comes from vital Bangsamoro constituencies, is tasked with drawing out stakeholders sentiments that will be considered in shaping inclusive, participatory and empowering social and political institutions in the future Bangsamoro. These features will be embodied in the draft Bangsamoro Basic Law which the Transition Commission will craft for submission to Congress. The President has requested that the 37th round of formal exploratory talks that was originally scheduled to begin today, March 25, be reset to April next month. Government Peace Panel Chair Miriam Coronel-Ferrer with two other panel members Yasmin Busran-Lao and Senen Bacani are currently in Kuala Lumpur to personally convey the request and to set with their counterparts the new date for the talks. The Government and MILF Panel chairs will likewise discuss the preparations being undertaken for the Transition Commission. As the President said today, it is important to finish all the annexes, which requires reaching a meeting of the minds on these annexes. This will, in turn, help in the process of crafting a new organic act so that the final outcome will be legislation all stakeholders agree to, and rally behind. March 25, 2013

Election campaign quirks and quarks

Despite the statement released by the National Democratic Front against the election of the Tan candidates in Samar province, it has appeared until this week that avid supporters of the Tan families, led by matriarch representative Milagrosa Tee Tan of the second congressional district (Catbalogan City down to Marabut town) simply ignore that and supporters among the voting populace are even unmindful of it. To some, the Tans remain unfazed. More correctly, they are thought to be unaffected. That statement did sound like a threat, in a way, but many have believed it as not actually meant to be a serious one, just plain blah-blah. Candidates running via the Tan clouts even appear to be unmolested and thus are said to keep on preparing for the fast-coming launch of their respective campaign salvos. That is politics. Never deadserious in Samar, er, in the entire Philippines. Its the way not personnel. Today, some observers are saying that even if the local election campaign period is only just coming, already there are campaign strategies by candidates for local elective positions that face the electorate 24/7. Other strategies include early cash loans of up to 5,000 pesos per borrower (notwithstanding whether or not the borrower is qualified under United Nations standards, because anyway, as far as the barrio-based coordinator is concerned, she is given the fullest authority to determine who should be lent from among the constituent registered voters in her barrio). That actually went together with the Philhealth I.D. cards gimmick. And then ostensibly the lousiest and most scandalous there

for the Comelec czar and clean-election vanguards for those who believe they can argue better and refute every charge against them by any who recline on supposedly effective and operative election laws. That seriousness went under acid test for over two years earlier. Did you remember that the PNoy Aquino administration yelled at those who had their names and even faces painted on

tarpaulins that talked about government projects? Well, towards the national campaign period, candidates went on a crazy display of their tarpaulin pre-campaign announcements, first mostly in the form of greetings (for fiestas, Christmas, New Year, and others delving on advocacy lines), and lately, best wishes (like for graduates). Most them remain still high up on display, unremoved by Comelecs deputies and

Tubbataha Reef Fiasco: A Marine Eco-System Set-Back

My writing experience

It appears that 2013 has started with the poisonous fang of the reptile snake representing the Year in the Chinese calendar, being experienced in the Philippines. There were reported lives and properties lost as a result of the New Years revelry, bloody cases involving the PNP and the military against anti-government elements, even among themselves, and many more news like these are regular fixtures in the trimedia! Poor President PNoy and his chosen PNP chieftain, both in the receiving end of peace and order related happenings. To us members of the dwindling population of Filipino marine biologists and peers in the science community, we have our share of HEADACHE the Tubbataha Reef fiasco! The extent of the damage caused to the Reef, that makes the Philippines as part of Asias Coral Triangle and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, cannot be measured and compensated monetarily. The estimated 1,000 square kilometers portion of the reef damaged by the US Warship Guardian, was true only at the time the report was made. Big waves hitting the Sulu Sea continue to rock and dislocate the steel monster while the fragile hard-corals continue to break dead. How fast or is it slow this type of corals grow annually measured in few millimeters ONLY, unlike other marine organisms. While people are talking only about damage to the coral population, their concerns should expand to include

other marine lives and destruction to the natural ecosystem and habitat to fish, shell-fish, reptiles, and mammal species that had chosen the Tubbataha Reef for their sanctuary. Has one forgotten about the marine plants growing in and around the reef seaweeds or marine algae that co-exist with hard/ stony corals, food to fish species and man alike? Corals by themselves cannot exist without the marine plants (algae) living in symbiosis! Like most of the thousand species of animals, the marine algae/seaweeds found populating the Reef have not been fully documented, reported. We, students of marine biology are at a loss not to have known the species of plants and animals lost, killed by the Guardian Fiasco. Indeed, a big blow to the desire of the taxonomists, systematists and ecologists to write the marine flora and fauna of the country considered as the center of marine biodiversity. This writer, himself an active marine biology researcher (on marine algae/ seaweeds), is wondering why the Philippine Government do not monitor the pronouncements about the marine ecosystem fiasco being made by a non-scientist, nonmarine biologist. This explains for the lack of technical statements/opinions printed in the broadsheets or blared over radio and TV news programs. There are, definitely, active Filipino specialists on Coral biology and ecology who could fill the void of reports about the extent of damage caused to the Reef. Let these people do the talking because they are the ones in contact with the marine organisms, studying their biolviolations well, call them, sidetracks if no law prohibits them and then yet, they are stupendously tolerated, ignored, and excused, maybe even dismissed with the power and effect of absolution, by the Commission on Elections, the church leaders and those who are mumbling for clean and honest elections (which includes all activities related to the con-

ing language. This time, most of my creative works are still written in Winaray, but it is just to document its usage in our generation. Moreover, I want to help enrich Waray literature, which is one of the poorest regional literatures in the country today. That is why most of my songs, poems, and short stories, in-

cluding my short stories for children and my two ambitious novels that are still in the making are in Winaray. Since the best language to use in writing is the language you think in, I then write my creative outputs in my native tongue knowing that, most if not all of the time, I think in it. (To be continued)

March 28, 2013 Holy Thursday Ex. 12:1-811-14; Ps 116; ! Cor 11:23-26; Jn 13:1-15 THE WASHING OF THE DISCIPLES FEET
Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father. He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end. The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand him over. So during supper, fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God, he rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet and dry them with the towel around his waist. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, Master, are you going to wash my feet? Jesus answered and said to him, What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later. Peter said to him, You will never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, Unless I was you, you will have no inheritance with me. Simon Peter said to him, Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well. Jesus said to him, Whoever has bathed has no need except to have his feet washed, for he is clean all over; so you are clean, but not all. For he knew who would betray him; for this reason, he said, Not all of you are clean. So when he had washed their feet (and) put his garments back on and reclined at table again, he said to them, Do you realize what I have done for you? You call me teacher and master, and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one anothers feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.

FIND THE NEEDY

A man told me that one of the most popular aquarium fish is the shark. He explained: if you catch a small shark and confine it, it will stay a size proportionate to the aquarium. Sharks can be six inches long yet fully matured. But if you turn them loose in the ocean they grow into their normal length of eighth feet. Likewise, if we get out of our own selfish preoccupation and reach out in loving service to others, we can develop our human and divine potential to the full. If, however, we live all for ourselves without any care and concern for others we will end up remaining six-inch Christians, who swim around in a little puddle. In order to instill into us the importance of loving service to others, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and said, if I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one anothers feet (Jn 13:14). If we love Christ for what he has done for us on Calvary, if we have learnt to see him in others, especially the needy, it will be possible for us to love and serve them, as Christ has commanded us. As Mother Teresa said, We have to find the needy. What she meant was that we cannot be content with some kind of abstract notion of mercy and service. We cant say, I love humanity; it is only people I cant stand. She meant to say that it is in people, in individuals, that we will discover Christ as we serve them. Maybe, sometimes, we wont discover Christ in people we serve, behind the dirty hands, the wrinkled face, the matted hair. But those who love God and want to serve him, will serve any person who is in need., they serve when they are tired and when it is inconvenient and repulsive. There are no violins playing softly in the background when they serve others. Yet, in the name of love they are able to bear it all. (His Word is Life by Vima Dasan, S.J., published by Paulines.
