In this chapter you will learn how to use a grid and guides so that you can accurately lay out a folded document, such as a brochure or birthday card. If you had to produce a brochure, you would probably use desktop publishing software, but you could use Fireworks to create some text headings and graphics to use in the brochure. These would then be reusable in future brochures. We will take a closer look at how to create and edit text, and the options you can use to change its appearance in different ways.

Create a new canvas with a Width of 1200 Pixels, a Height of 850 Pixels, a Resolution of 72 Pixels/Inch, and the Canvas color set to White.
Go to View on the bar, and choose Grid, Show Grid. The screen is now covered in squares, but the grid needs to be edited for our purposes. Choose View, Grid, Edit Grid. We need the grid to fit perfectly the canvas is 1 200 by 850 pixels so a grid of 50 x 50 pixels will do nicely. Copy Figure 9.1 and press OK.

Press Ctrl-0 (that's Ctrl and Zero, the shortcut key combination for fit all). This will fit all of your canvas onto the screen. Click and hold on the left-hand ruler, drag a guide and measure along the top ruler 600 pixels. Look at Figure 9.3, and draw out guides so you have two pages marked out ready to design your brochure

Suppose you wanted to have vertical text down the left margin of the second page. Make sure nothing is currently selected.
Click the Text tool. In the Properties inspector, click the button to the left of the Text alignment buttons. Choose Vertical left to right.

Choose a typeface that suggests a home-made sign and enter a large font size, say 120. (You will need to type in the font size, rather than using the slider, to get it big enough to nicely fill the whole canvas.) Click towards the middle of the canvas and type Base (Enter) Camp.
Use the Pointer tool to centre the text box in the canvas don't forget you can tweak the position with the arrow keys as well. With the Pointer tool or the Text tool selected, click the Color box in the

Figure9.11:Woodfill
This next bit is up to you. It will take a bit of work, so really try to achieve the right effect: the lettering has to appear as if it is engraved, or carved, into the background.
Add a Live filter you can use Bevel and Embose, Inset Embose or the Eye Candy 4000 LE, Bevel Boss With the vector Rectangle tool, draw a rectangle over the entire canvas. It should fill automatically with the wood pattern. If it is does not, fill it using options in the Properties inspector.
In the Layers panel, drag the Rectangle object under the Text object.

Add another Live Filter. Select Adjust Color,Hue/Saturation, and make the text look burnt by darkening it and taking a little colour saturation out - have a look. at Figure 9.12 for reference.
