Welcome Cattle Producers,

2012 was quite a challenging year in southeastern Montana. e snowfall was light and the spring was dry. We were on the edge of the 315 thousand acre re with no electricity for eight days. It was a challenge for us to keep all the cattle watered and the freezers charged. We made it and were fortunate enough not to have lost any grass or cattle to the re. On the brighter side, we were blessed with two more grandchildren, both girls, so that tallys up to an even dozen six boys and six girls. ose grandchildren are such a joy in life. is is an exciting time for cattlemen and women. e prices we got for our calves are at an all-time high. With cattle numbers down in the country, quality breeding females will be in high demand. We fed the bulls out in our feedlot at Broadus again this year. ey are on a high roughage ration formulated for us by the nutritionists at CHS. e cattle are not supplemented in the summer. e only help they get is the hay in the winter months. e calves are grown without creep feed, just good old mothers milk. We have introduced a couple of new sires to our program and we are excited about them and looking forward to your input on what they have done to help your herds. We strive to keep cattle that have a moderate frame, maternal instincts, sound feet and legs and, of course, a good attitude. e bulls are run through a battery of tests that include scrotal and pelvic measurements, semen evaluating and have had their DNA check to carry no genetic defects. We invite you to stop by the ranch anytime to look at the bulls. e feedlot is only seven miles north of Broadus and the coee pot is always on. John loves to talk bull with anyone who will listen. So give us a call and let us help you pick out a bull to t your needs. Remember, all of our bulls are 100% guaranteed for one full year. ere are no questions asked if you feel your bull did not grow and develop like you expected, if he was hurt in any way or even if he was struck by lightning and died. We will give you full credit minus the salvage, which you keep, at our sale next year. And if you need, we will loan you a bull to nish the season. We are proud to have helped you with your breeding needs for the last 40-plus years and hope to continue to help you in the future.

PERFORMANCE INFORMATION
BirtH Wt. ePd: Birth weight EPD is expressed in pounds and is an indicator of an individuals contribution to its progenys weight at birth and is a comparison to breed average. Birth weight seems to aect calving ease of rst calf heifers. BirtH WeigHt: Birth weight is moderate in heritability and excessive birth weight may increase calving diculty. Birth weight seems to have a positive relationship to yearling growth and each breeder must determine how much birth weight is acceptable. It seems birth weight will vary from year to year depending on winter weather and feeding rations. Length of gestation can also aect birth weight. e unborn calf is gaining about one pound per day during the last days of gestation. Weaning WeigHt ePd: Weaning weight EPD is expressed in pounds and is an estimate of the amount of increase or decrease in weaning weight you would expect from the progeny of a bull compared to an average bull of the breed for weaning weight. It is related to the genetic growth that a bull will pass along to his ospring. Weaning WeigHts: Actual weaning weight is taken at the time of weaning. Adjusted 205 day weight is a calf s weaning weight adjusted to a standard 205 days of age. Adjusting weaning weights allow for comparison of one bull against another for weaning growth. ese comparisons are only against other animals in a contemporary group in the same herd where all animals are handled the same. Since adjusted weaning weights are moderately heritable, choosing bulls with high ADJ WW can increase that trait in your herd. Yearling WeigHt ePd: e yearling EPD is expressed in pounds and is an estimate of the amount of increase or decrease in yearling weight you can expect from the ospring of a bull compared to an average bull of the breed for yearling weight. adJusted 365 daY WeigHt: Yearling weights are adjusted to 365 day weights to make an accurate comparison of bulls. is comparison is also made against animals of a contemporary group. Since 365 day weight is considered highly heritable, choosing for the 365 day weight will increase growth. ere is a direct correlation between birth weights and increased yearling weights. Accepting a little more birth weight may be necessary in increasing yearling weight. MilK ePd: Milk EPDs are a prediction of milking ability of a bulls daughters. Milk EPDs are not related to teat size or udder shape of those females. PelVic area: Pelvic area is one of the factors which determines calving ease. Pelvic area is attained by multiplying the width times the depth of the pelvic opening. Pelvic area is highly heritable and measuring the pelvic area in bulls should be a good indicator of pelvic size that can be expected in a bulls daughters. scrotal circuMFerence: Scrotal circumference is directly related to mobility and concentration of semen. Bulls with larger testicle size are more likely to have higher pregnancy rates. Scrotal circumference is also closely related to age at puberty in both bulls and females. Maintaining early sexual maturity in larger, fast growing cattle is among the most important performance traits and is essential to protability.

pelvic Area is Critical

Its a major factor in calving ease.

This drawing shows where measurements are taken to determine size of the pelvic area. The heritability of pelvic size has been estimated to range from 36 percent to 92 percent, with an average of 61 percent, which is quite high. This value is higher than the heritability estimate of 45 percent for calf birth weight and similar to the 58 percent for yearling weight. This means that pelvic size should be transmitted readily from sire and dam to resulting progeny. Selecting sires for pelvic size should result in increased pelvic size of daughters.

Bulls Pelvic Size Affects Calving Ease

Edited from an article in the Drovers Journal
Buying a calving-ease bull is the key for most cattlemen in reducing calving difficulty, but this is only a partial solution. It is important also to screen bulls and heifers for pelvic size. Calving difficulty is costly. An average of 30% of all first-calf heifers have calving difficulty. Approximately 10% of the calves are lost. In addition to the calf losses, heifers who have calving problems will be difficult to breed back. The first thing is to decide the average size of calves you would like to have. From that number, you can determine the minimum square centimeters of pelvic area your heifers and cows must have. To do this, multiply the pounds of calf you would like to have by 2.2. For example, if you want an 82 pound calf, multiply 82 by 2.2. That will give you a number of 180.4, which is the minimum number of square centimeters needed in the pelvic area of a female to handle an 82 pound calf. The fastest way to reduce calving difficulties is to screen heifer replacements for pelvic size. Cull those that fall below the pelvic opening required for your target birth weight. The longer range approach to reducing calving problems involves selecting bulls on the basis of pelvic area.
