Lesson Plan: The Law of Supply and Demand

Name: Haley Stojak, Ben Rubin, Eddie Walsh Class/Subject: Unity Junior High School 8th Grade History Reconstruction to WWII The Law of Supply and Demand (a mini lesson) Date: 12/5/11 Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: Students will investigate the forces of supply and demand through a cooperative learning activity. Students will compare the supply and demand activity to historical economic events through content review and holistic discussion. Content Standards: 15.A.3c Describe the relationship between consumer purchases and businesses paying for productive resources.
15.B.3b Explain the effects of choice and competition on individuals and the economy as a whole.

Materials/Resources/Technology: Game Activity hand-out Candy for Game White Board Teachers Goals:
To engage students in the principles of supply and demand through a fun activity To successfully facilitate a discussion that connects to students previously acquired knowledge

Time: 15-20 minutes 3 minutes Start of Class: Teacher will start class by asking students to recall the law of supply and demand graph from last weeks worksheet: What did the graph look like? What did the graph mean? Introduction of Lesson: Teacher will vocally introduce the lesson as a game that will demonstrate the Law of Supply and the Law of Demand. Teacher will explain the directions for the game and tell students that the Law of Supply and Demand played an important role in the Farm Economics and Populism section they covered in last weeks class. Lesson Instruction: Teacher will hand out game instruction sheets and designated candy to students after forming them into four groups. Students will follow the instruction sheet and play out the gamedemonstrating the laws of supply and demand (see game instruction handout for further detail). Assessments/Checks for Understanding: After the conclusion of the game, teacher will facilitate a discussion about what the students learned from the game: What happened to the supply and demand of the candy Who won the game and why? Closure/Wrap-Up/Review: Teacher will wrap-up the class with a short explanation of the law of supply and the law of demand. Teacher will use the white board to draw the graph on the board for students to visualize. Teacher will relate this concept to the overproduction in farming that occurred in the late 19th century (a topic students learned about last week) Self-Assessment: Cooperating teacher evaluation/Professor evaluation
