Welcome to StuffIt 10.0.2 for Macintosh
All of us at Allume Systems would like to thank you for using our products. This document contains information about installing the 10.0.2 versions of StuffIt Expander (Stand-Alone version), StuffIt Standard, and StuffIt Deluxe. It also includes any last minute information that did not make it into the Electronic Help files.
System Requirements
StuffIt Expander (Stand-Alone version): At least 20 MB of available disk space. StuffIt Standard: At least 25 MB of available disk space. StuffIt Deluxe: At least 50 MB of available disk space. StuffIt Deluxe and Standard: CD/DVD burning requires an Apple iLife-compatible CD/DVD burner. .Mac uploading requires a .Mac account (visit http://www.mac.com for information about obtaining a .Mac subscription). All versions of StuffIt 10.x require Mac OS X 10.3 or later. Certain features of StuffIt Deluxe (Spotlight and Automator plugins) are Mac OS X 10.4 specific, and therefore require Mac OS X 10.4. It is highly recommended that you stay current with Apple's free OS updates. You can do so by going to System Preferences and running "Software Update". As of this writing the latest free update for OS 10.3 is 10.3.9. The latest free update for OS 10.4 is 10.4.4. Older versions of StuffIt Deluxe, StuffIt Standard, and StuffIt Expander are available for those not yet running Mac OS X 10.3 or later: Version 8.0.2 of StuffIt is the recommended version for those using Mac OS 10.1.5 through 10.2.8. Version 7.0.3 of StuffIt is the recommended version for those using Mac OS 8.6 through
9.2.2. You can purchase these older versions of StuffIt Deluxe or download these older versions of StuffIt Standard from the Allume online store at: http://www.allume.com/store
StuffIt Deluxe users: Click Continue at the opening splash screen. At the StuffIt Read Me screen, click "Continue" again. At the next screen, read the Software License Agreement (SLA), and click the Agree button if you accept its terms. You must agree to the Software License Agreement before installing the software. If you do not agree to the terms of the SLA you must quit the installation. StuffIt Deluxe users only: Enter your Name, Company, and Registration Number (see Finding Your Registration Number below) when prompted to do so and then click "Register". If you are upgrading an existing registered copy of StuffIt Deluxe 10, you will not be prompted to enter a registration number. At the next screen, click Install to install this StuffIt product. StuffIt Deluxe users only: If you wish to install only part of the StuffIt Deluxe package, click the Easy Install pop-up menu and choose Custom Install, then select the package(s) you want to install. At the next screen, click the "Choose" button to install this StuffIt product into the OS X Applications folder (this is the default and recommended location). When prompted, you can optionally choose to add icons for StuffIt Expander and DropStuff to your dock. When the installation has finished, Log Out and then Log In again to ensure that all components that use the StuffIt Frameworks are updated with the new version. If you are upgrading from an older version, the installer will automatically remove old versions of System components and replace them with newer versions. The installer WILL NOT delete the old StuffIt application folder. When the installation is complete you can manually remove your old StuffIt application folder by dragging it to the trash.
your CD, or in the confirmation E-mail you received after purchasing the product online. StuffIt Deluxe registration numbers have a prefix beginning with DLX, StuffIt Standard registration numbers have a prefix beginning with DRP. Be sure to keep a copy of your registration number in a safe place. You will need it if you request technical support or if you need to reinstall your software.
Fixed issue with browsing a StuffIt X archive after extracting files and closing the archive.
All StuffIt products: Improvements to the StuffIt X Format JPEG Compression: The StuffIt X format now allows you to compress your JPEG images up to 30% without any loss of image quality. Improved compression speed: A number of changes have been made to the StuffIt X archive format that should significantly improve compression speed when you are using
the "Better" compression level. StuffIt Deluxe suite: View Thumbnails in an archive: The StuffIt Deluxe application now allows you to view thumbnails of StuffIt X archived JPEG images directly from within the StuffIt Deluxe browser. Spotlight Support (Mac OS 10.4 only): The StuffIt Deluxe suite now includes a Spotlight importer that allows Spotlight to view file names for items stored within StuffIt, Zip, and Tar archives. Automator Support (Mac OS 10.4 only): The StuffIt Deluxe suite now includes support for Apples new Automator automation tool. You can now include steps that create and expand StuffIt, Zip, and Tar archives in your Automator work flows. Improved .Mac support: StuffIt Express PE (included in the the StuffIt Deluxe suite) can now create drop box applications that send and retrieve files from an iDisk. Create Self-Extracting Archives for Mac OS X: The StuffIt Deluxe suite now includes SEA Maker which allows you to create self-extracting archives for Mac OS X. These archives allow you to install files to any location on the hard drive that you choose, and also allow you to display a splash screen and read me file as items are being expanded. Improved MultiProcessor Support: Support for multi-threaded operation has been extended to include compression actions preformed via the Magic Menu and StuffIt contextual menu.
Backwards Compatibility
Some of the new features in StuffIt Deluxe 10.x will cause the StuffIt X archives you create to require at least StuffIt Expander 9.0.2 for Mac or StuffIt 9.0.x for Windows to open. To create StuffIt X archives that are compatible all the way back to StuffIt Expander 7.0.3 for Macintosh and StuffIt 8.0 on Windows use these steps: Turn off JPEG compression. You can find this option on the StuffIt page of the Preferences dialog in the DropStuff application.
Set the StuffIt X compression method to Faster. Again, you can find this option on the StuffIt page of the Preferences dialog in the DropStuff application. Changing these settings in the DropStuff application will only effect archives created by DropStuff. For information on creating compatible archives with StuffIt Deluxe and MagicMenu/StuffIt CM please check the documentation included with those applications. Changes to Zip Compression: The Zip format in StuffIt 10 now uses Apple's AppleSingle encoding method for preserving resource forks on older Mac files rather than our triedand-true MacBinary encoding method. This means that if you enable "Preserve Mac Content" when you make Zip archives, they will now be compatible with Panther and Tiger's built-in unzipping tool, but it also means that they are NOT compatible with older versions of StuffIt Expander (Note: StuffIt Expander 10 can expand either style). People using Panther or later can update to the StuffIt Expander 10. People using older versions of the Mac OS will not be able to expand the resource forks of these files properly. Basically, if youre sending files to another Mac user, dont use Zip. Really, trust us on this. Encrypted Zips and Zips created using the Deflate64 option are not supported by Apple's built-in unzipping tool.
Known Issues
Issue: Expanded .sit archives appear empty on Mac OS 10.4 (aka Tiger) An issue exists, when expanding StuffIt 5 (.sit) archives on Mac OS X 10.4, whereby the expansion process appears to result in incomplete expansion. Expanded folders are either empty, or have fewer items than expected. This issue only occurs when you have turned on the "Show Item Info" option in the Finder's "Show View Options" dialog. In reality, all the items have been expanded, they are just not being shown in the Finder.
You can verify this by using the Terminal.app and looking in the "empty" folder. This is a Mac OS 10.4 Finder update issue. Workaround: You can easily force the Finder to update the empty folder at any time by dragging a new item into the folder after expansion completes. You can also avoid this issue by turning off the Show Item Info option in the Finder. To disable the "Show Item Info" option: Open a new Finder window. Set it to "Icon" view. Select "Show View Options" from the Finder's "View" menu (cmd + J). Uncheck the "Show Item Info" checkbox. Issue: Erroneous error when expanding compressed or encoded Disk Images with Continue to Expand enabled and Mount Disk Images disabled. Expanding a compressed or encoded disk image (.dmg) file when the DMG is the only item in the archive and with Continue to Expand enabled and Mount Disk Images disabled will generate an erroneous unrecognized file error. Workaround: enabling Mount Disk Images or disabling Continue to Expand will eliminate this error.
