A word from our President..

President Zakia Pugh Bryn Mawr College MSS/MSLP Candidate

Hotep Family! I hope that each of my brothers and sisters are enjoying your spring semester at your respective schools. I am hopeful that many of you are preparing to join OSA in Jacksonville, Florida for an exceptional conference. OSA is working hard to provide our family with a fun & educational experience while you are in Jacksonville. The 45th Annual Conference activities include OSA Veteran Stand down, Student Symposium, Dance with step show, and our Annual Luncheon/Elections. Brothers and sisters, if you have not registered for conference, I highly suggest you log onto www.nabsw.org and register today. It will be an experience you do not want to miss. Conference is time for all members of NABSW to come together as family and empower each other so that we can take it back to our communities and continue the work of ujima in our communities. It is also a great time for students who are interested in becoming more involved, to take on leadership roles, participate in the newly revised Sankofa project, or join a national committee to make more connections within the organization. If you have not submitted a nomination form to hold a national position within the office of Student Affairs, you can do so at conference, please look for any OSA officer. We are excited to see you there! I wish you luck in your studies and hope to see you in Jacksonville!
Peace & Blessings,

Zakia Pugh

Advisors Comments..
Hotep Family! As we prepare for Jacksonville, I hope you are preparing to bring five essentials with you: (1) your love for our African culture & heritage (2) your appetite for knowledge (3) your networking skills and business cards (4) plenty of energy and last but certainly not least (5) your commitment to OSA and NABSW! Did you know, our organization does not receive federal funds because we are an organization exclusive to people of African descent? We understand that as social workers, collaboration is necessary but more importantly, we acknowledge that family meetings are for family. What are you saying Advisor Brown? I am saying, when you have a family meeting, you do not include those people who are not a part of your immediate family and/or do not know or understand the issues up for discussion. We see NABSW the same way! When we come together as family, it is to address those issues, circumstances, and societal ills that affect people of African descent (people who look like us). At conference, you will see that the workshops, symposiums, and functions are all African centered. President Benton once said a river that loses its source dries up, African proverb. In a nutshell, we have planned a week of activities to get you energized, keep you motivated, and to get us all ready to continue the work in our respective communities. Earlier in this message I quoted President Bentons reference to the African proverb a river that loses its source dries up; we do not expect that happen because weve got the source-come to conference!

A team of second year MSW students (Brandi Shine, Breanna Kelly, Brittney Adams, Franci Frazier and Tiffany Person) from Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA have been working hard to engage the community in disaster preparedness. The team is being supervised by the National ABSW Disaster Preparedness Committee. The team is conducting workshops in the metro Atlanta area, educating the Black community on the importance of being prepared for natural and man-made disasters. This semester they will have completed four workshops and trained over 120 community members. The team is presenting the details of their experience, at the 45th Annual NABSW Conference on Thursday April 3, during the morning symposium. The student Disaster Preparedness Team has incorporated various social media outlets into their project. Each media outlet shares information with the community about disaster preparedness, upcoming workshops, and ways to prepare a kit. You are encouraged to follow all social media outlets for alerts and helpful information to keep you prepared in the dorm or at home. Please be sure to follow on:

OSA IS PROUD TO INTRODUCE TO SOME AND RE-ESTABLISH FOR OTHERS:

SANKOFA DEFINED: originated in Ghana from the Akan language, Sankofa means to go back and take or taking past lessons from our history to guide the present and future. The primary goal of the Sankofa Mentoring Project (SMP) is to foster relationships between a pool of experienced professionals within the National Association of Black Social Workers and new members of the organization. Through this partnership, emerging leaders are able to grow and develop personally and professionally with the guidance and leadership of seasoned members of the organization. Seasoned members are referred to as mentors and the emerging leaders are mentees. By establishing reciprocal relationships, the Sankofa Mentoring Project enables NABSW to continue its commitment of uplifting our communities. Optimistically, we look to local chapters who are interested in the SMP and ask that you begin to identify members willing to participate and who you believe would benefit most.

CALLING ALL CANDIDATES!

We also encourage active, dues-paid student members to participate in this years election of National Officers! Please contact OSA Parliamentarian, Shawn Johnson at osa.parlmt@gmail.com for more information. You must be present for the 45 th Annual National Conference in Jacksonville, Florida April 2-6, 2013 to participate in the election.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU IN JACKSONVILLE!
