Upgrade NemSLock Licenses

When you are running Allplan 2006 with a NemSLock license (no hardlock!) and you - as a Serviceplus customer - want to upgrade to Allplan 2008, you also need to update your NemSLock licenses. You can update your existing Allplan 2006 licenses using the Allplan License Upgrade program without this having any effect on Allplan 2006 or your existing installation. Allplan License Upgrade automatically finds the licenses that need to be upgraded and leads you to the process of generating a registration request, which is required for requesting licenses for Allplan 2008. You can then install these licenses when upgrading to Allplan 2008. Allplan License Upgrade starts automatically when you opt for Upgrade or Upgrade with data transfer during installation and select the Existing license file option.

Update licenses prior to upgrade

If you want to update your licenses before you upgrade to Allplan 2008 (as you need to upgrade several computers, for example), you can also use Allplan License Upgrade as a standalone program. You can download this program from Nemetschek's website (http://). The LicenseUpgradeTool.exe program must be copied to each computer with Allplan 2006 and executed there. Double-click in Windows Explorer to start it. Note: Allplan Version 2006.1 or higher is required for using Allplan License Upgrade as a standalone program. If this is not so, you need to update Allplan to this version first.

Building information modeling

Building information modeling

A major task for Version 2008 was the development of Allplan towards a tool for building information modeling (BIM). Nemetschek is a pioneer in the field of BIM: based on conventional computer aided design (CAD), BIM facilitates the application of data models that combine information on rooms and components with geometric data and graphics, which is also known as component-oriented designing. All those involved in the design, construction and management of buildings get all the information they need and all the data is transferred without errors or problems.

The two central tools in Allplan are the building structure and the plane model.

10

Working with the building structure

Allplan 2008

Working with the building structure

Basics
What is the building structure?
The building structure provides a new way of structuring, organizing and using documents (=drawing files) in Allplan (think of the Building Information Model). You can use the building structure to logically structure a building using several hierarchical levels. Sections, views and lists can be derived directly from a building structure. Allplan comes with several predefined building structures you can use. The plane model is directly associated with the building structure. The building structure consists of a number of hierarchically structured levels; drawing files are assigned to the individual levels. You can then assign a pair of default reference planes to each structural level. All the drawing files belonging to a structural level can adopt their default planes from the structural level to which they are assigned. When you change a structural level, the height setting of the associated drawing files can update accordingly.

New Features in Allplan 2008

Building information modeling

11

Advantages of the building structure

Working with the building structure has significant advantages: The building structure includes an integrated plane model you can use to manage default planes and roof planes for an entire project. These planes can be assigned directly to drawing files. Data can be copied in an easy and comfortable manner (for example, create new stories, design alternatives etc.). Views, section and list can be generated quickly and easily. Source drawing files and target drawing files are saved; you do not need to give any thought to which drawing files should be activated. Simplified data exchange via IFC. Structuring data based on the topological structure of a building reflects the approach of designers.

Example of a building structure

Example of a building structure (taken from the Simple House example that comes with Allplan)

Working with the building structure

Allplan 2008

Using structural levels to apply a logical structure to a building

Structural levels allow you to apply a logical structure to a building. You can assign one or more drawing files to each structural level. There are two different types of structural levels: Predefined structural levels: predefined structural levels may only be used in their hierarchical sequence. For example, a structure cannot be subordinate to a building. However, structural levels can be left out (e.g. a building can be subordinate to a project). The following five predefined structural levels are provided (in this hierarchy): Site Structure Building Story Sub-story

Any structural levels: in addition, you can use custom structural levels, which you can insert anywhere in the building structure. Click Restrictions of building structure (see "Restrictions of building structure dialog box" on page 38) on the shortcut menu of a project to specify which structural levels can be used in the building structure and which structural levels can be assigned drawing files. For example, you can specify that only IFC-compliant structural levels can be used.

Building structure and fileset structure

You can use the building structure and the fileset structure in parallel manner. The drawing file status can be set in the fileset structure and in the building structure; these two settings are independent of each other. The drawing files are activated depending on which of the two tabs is active when you close the dialog box. Important difference: a drawing file can only be assigned to a structural level once in the building structure.

New Features in Allplan 2008

Building information modeling

13

Select structural levels

You can select structural levels by clicking the relevant check box. The status of drawing files is taken into account when the corresponding structural level is selected.

Structural level enabled

Structural level disabled

Clicking a check box activates the relevant structural level and all subordinate levels. Clicking a check box while pressing the CTRL key only activates this structural level. Subordinate levels are not selected.

Displaying the height of default reference planes

The height of the lower and upper default reference planes is displayed as follows in the dialog box:

14

Working with the building structure

Allplan 2008

A: the height of the associated default reference planes is displayed beside the relevant structural level. B: when a drawing file adopts the height of the default reference planes from the superordinate structural level, nothing is displayed. C: when the height of the default reference planes in a drawing file differs from the height assigned to the superordinate structural level, the height is displayed in blue. D: when a drawing file does not adopt its default reference planes from the plane model, "-" is displayed. E: if the default reference planes assigned to a drawing file are not available, "?" is displayed (for example, when you delete the planes from the plane model later). When you move the cursor over a height displayed, the ToolTip shows the name of the plane model, pair of reference planes and of the default reference plane. When Show pairs of planes in color in tree structure is enabled in the Plane Manager options, the ToolTip appears in the corresponding color (not with Windows Vista).

Behavior of building structure in workgroup environment

Each user can modify the building structure. When you have opened a building structure which is currently modified by another user, the flashing icon is displayed beside the name of the project. The ToolTip of the project shows who has changed the building structure.

You have the following options: Import data again: you import data modified externally; the current building structure is overwritten. Save: you can decide which changes to retain:

The discarded building structure is saved as a conflict document (*.conflict). Note: The plane manager (see "Plane manager dialog box" on page 48) can only be opened by one user at any one time. If another user has already opened it, the name of this user is displayed in the ToolTip.

New Features in Allplan 2008

17

Restrictions of building structure

You can restrict the use of structural levels and the option to assign drawing files to a structural level. This way, you can limit the structures to IFC-compliant structures. You can define restrictions by clicking Restrictions of building structure (see "Restrictions of building structure dialog box" on page 38) on the shortcut menu of a project. If restrictions, which you define later, are inconsistent with the existing structural levels and drawing files, you must first eliminate these inconsistencies and remove the structural levels and/or drawing file assignments that are no longer permissible.

In the dialog box, a red cross indicates structural levels and drawing file assignments that are no longer permissible.

Working with the plane model

Basics
What is the plane model?
Default reference planes and roofscapes are managed in a plane model. A plane model contains pairs of default reference planes. Each pair of planes has a name. The same is true for the lower and upper default reference plane. The pairs of reference planes in a plane model are equivalent to the stories of a building and can be assigned to the structural levels of the building structure or to individual drawing files. A project can include several discrete plane models. The height of the default reference planes in the plane model can be changed. Any changes made to the height are immediately reflected in the drawing files to which a default reference plane is assigned from the building model. A plane model must not include pairs of planes with overlapping height settings with the exception of the pair of planes that defines the minimum and maximum height of the building. You can assign the height of a pair of planes to a drawing file or structural level of the building structure. You can also use the lower and upper default reference plane from different pairs of planes. This way, you can implement components in a cross-story manner (e.g. chimneys). Default reference planes that are not associated with the plane model can also be assigned to drawing files You can even select a custom height for the lower default reference plane and adopt the upper default reference plane from a plane model. Plane models can also be used without a building structure. You can use the animation settings to configure the program to display planes in isometric view and animation (see "Planes displayed in isometric view and animation" on page 118).

Printing and Plotting

Retain plot settings
In previous versions, the output device or paper format was automatically reset to its default if this setting, which was saved together with the relevant layout, was not available when you opened this layout using Windows drivers. Allplan 2008 includes the following improvements: The program does not check the availability of the output device and paper format saved in the layout until you activate the Plot Layouts tool. This way, the process of switching to the layout editor has been accelerated considerably even when the output device or paper format saved in the layout is not available. If the output device saved in the layout is not available, the program displays a dialog box where you can specify which device you want to use. If the paper format saved in the layout is not available, the program attempts to find an identical format with a different name. If this attempt fails, the program selects the next larger paper format. If the resulting larger printable area is within a specific tolerance range, which you can define as a percentage in the Plot Layout module's options, the program will use this paper format

You can assign a printout color to each of the 256 basic colors even if the Color stands for pen option is disabled. You can select one of the 256 basic colors in the list box or define a RGB color by entering values for Red, Green and Blue.

Until now, line elements have appeared in color or black in printouts. Now they can also be displayed using shades of gray, which the program internally calculates based on the colors assigned. Plotting is basically based on the setting for the Color stands for pen option in Show/Hide. When this option is active, the dialog box shows the colors that are assigned to the Allplan pens 1 to 15 using Tools - Definitions - Pen thickness; otherwise, all 256 basic colors are displayed. You can use the Show effect of "Color stands for pen" option to modify the scope of colors displayed without having to change the setting of the Color stands for pen option.

To apply reinforcement to corbels that are smaller than the adjacent column or that are located at a wall, you need to create a section and define the clipping area within the corbel. As a result, there is no irritating component edge between the corbel and the load-bearing component. And when you delimit the height of the section in addition, the reinforcement is automatically placed in the corbel in the correct position. Otherwise, you need to adjust the placing region using the shortcut menu.

Rise The polygonization value defines the maximum rise value of the secant to the arc (in mm). Then a polyline is applied to the curve so that the maximum offset of the polyline segment is smaller or equal to the rise entered. This option produces more accurate results than the segments in circle option.

Cross-Section Catalogs
New stock meshes
As of January 1, 2008, the producers of ISB will issue new stock meshes. Consequently, the current stock meshes, which were introduced in 2001, will no longer be produced. Allplan 2008 provides these new stock meshes, which are included in the German and Austrian cross-section catalogs. When upgrading, the new cross-section catalogs are copied to the ...\New\Ing folder. This is to prevent any data from being overwritten. To use the new cross-section catalogs, open Windows Explorer and copy the catalogs to the ...\Std folder. In addition to modified reinforcement cross-sections, the following changes are important: The outer dimensions of the meshes are 6000mm x 2300mm and 6000mm x 2350mm. New overlap and anchorage lengths for some types of stock meshes (due to the switch from double-bar meshes to single-bar meshes). Use for working and shell drawings

Allplan 2008

Associative views
The functionality and performance of associative views and sections has been improved in Allplan 2008. Now you can use this module for the entire building design process.

Use for working and shell drawings

As an alternative to Define Section and the tools in the Shell module, the Associative Views module provides a modern and forward-looking way of creating and editing working and shell drawings. However, when it comes to creating views and sections for a large number of stories, you should still use the Define Section tool. This is for performance reasons. The original architectural components and 3D models are retained in associative layouts; views and sections are derived directly. As a result, any modifications you make to the models or to the views and sections always produce consistent representations.

New Features in Allplan 2008

Associative views

157

Advanced functionality
Allplan includes the following new tools which you can use to modify existing views and sections without having to create them again and to get information on the referenced drawing files: Convert View to Section You can use this to convert a view to a section. You can define the height of the section object in the Section dialog box or by entering any polyline. Convert Section to View

You can use this tool to convert a section to a view. Show Clipping Path You can use this tool to display the section object of a section with or without clipping area in a view, section or in 3D elements in order to check which elements are included in the section, for example. Show Referenced Drawing Files You can use this tool to open a window providing information on referenced drawing files. This is useful when you have created views and sections based on several drawing files. In addition, all associative views and sections are created with a border, which is useful for selecting views/sections and activating tools via the shortcut menu.

158

Use for working and shell drawings

Allplan 2008

Convert to 2D
You can convert views and sections to 2D elements by clicking Convert. The associativity is retained. When views and sections are converted to 3D, the representation is calculated based on the 3D model and cannot be modified. When views and sections are converted to 2D, on the other hand, the program creates discrete lines which can be modified individually. Modifications are retained unless the changes you make to the model affect the modified line.

New Features in Allplan 2008

160

Use for working and shell drawings

Allplan 2008

You can select area styles for section area elements of 3D objects.

Special features
As associative views and sections are derived directly from 3D elements, you have to take into account the special conditions when the views and sections you want to edit and display are based on several drawing files.

Editing associative views

The 3D elements must be loaded whenever you carry out an operation that requires a calculation of the views and sections based on the model. Although you can dimension and label views and sections or edit the section object without loaded 3D elements, you cannot create or modify views and sections. The Modify View and Section Properties tool only allows you to modify properties that affect the display of a section. When you work in a team in a workgroup environment, it is a good idea to open the drawing files with the 3D elements in reference

New Features in Allplan 2008

Associative views

161

mode and activate them only when you need them. This ensures that every team member can work with identical data. Check that the document access mode is set to Advanced in the Services installation. This is the default setting when you install Allplan 2008 for the first time. You can also copy the original drawing files to empty drawing files. However, this approach should be used for exceptional cases only. In this case, you need to make sure that the copied data and the original match when printing out layouts.

Displaying associative views

What is important when displaying associative views and sections is the status of the 3D elements (not the drawing file status). The same is true for the display of fills. The drawing file status of the associative section only plays a role when you want to display and modify the section object. If the 3D elements are not loaded or if they are in drawing files open in reference mode, the associative views and sections cannot be edited, regardless of their drawing file status. If, on the other hand, the 3D elements are active, the relevant associative views and sections are also active even if the relevant drawing files are open in reference mode. Consequently, you can use the 3D elements and the associative views and sections to modify the 3D model. When you modify the 3D model without having loaded the associative views and sections, these changes are also updated the next time you select the associative views and sections. Associative views and sections thus simplify the process of modifying 3D models.

Layers
When creating associative views and sections, you can assign layers to all linear elements. These layers allow you to control element visibility. In addition, the entire view gets the layers of the 3D elements. When you set these layers to Hidden, frozen (to hide the 3D elements in layouts, for example), the elements of the view are also hidden. To avoid this, you can assign a different layer to the relevant view using the Modify Format Properties in View tool and the Modify, use in associative views only setting.

162

Use for working and shell drawings

Allplan 2008

Note: If the 3D elements and the associative views and sections are in the same drawing file and if you want to hide the 3D elements in layouts, it is a good idea to use layout windows.

Recommended approach
When it comes to creating shell drawings, you can integrate the architectural floor plan as a "special section" in the layout or create the plan view as a view or section. When working in a team in particular, we recommend that you create the 3D elements and the views and sections in different drawing files and use the second option for the plan view.

Display
You can define the architectural floor plan as usual so that the representation reflects a section (intersected components with a thick line, views of components with a thin line). In comparison with the integration of the architectural floor plan, the option of creating the plan view as a section has the following advantages: You can limit the floor plan to the region you want to display in the layout. To display elements in front of the clipping plane, you can create an additional, congruent section for which you set the viewing direction from the opposite side (e.g. soffit and plan) and specify a different linetype for hidden edges, for example. Door strip and window sill are displayed automatically. You do not need to spend time planning how to create component openings. Symbols and labels for openings can be added as a 2D design to the views and sections. To achieve a consistent representation in plan, isometric views, views and sections, select the hidden line image and specify the same format properties for all visible and hidden edges.

New Features in Allplan 2008

Associative views

163

In addition, use the same format properties to display intersected edges in sections and enable the Apply thick line around intersected elements option and make settings for this option.

If you want to use different line thickness values for the display of visible, hidden and/or intersected edges, convert the view or section to 2D and modify the display. You can also display the visible edges of the individual elements (masonry or reinforced concrete walls, timber elements etc.) using different line thickness values by working with Content (e.g. Allplan IBD) and drawing types.

Show/Hide and layers

To ensure that what you see is what you get, we recommend that Show/Hide and you disable the Color stands for pen option in enable the Thick line option.

You can use Allplan's layers to quickly switch between key plans, shell drawings and reinforcement drawings, which are always displayed correctly: Use layer sets to specify what is to be displayed. Associative views

Use for reinforcement drawings

Whereas the process of applying reinforcement in 'reinforce without model' has not changed, Allplan 2008 generates associative views and sections when you create reinforcement in a 2D shell in 'reinforce using model' mode. You can then edit and enhance these views and sections using the Associative Views module. You can use architectural elements and 3D components with associative views and sections you have created using the Associative Views module for the 3D shell when working in 'reinforce using model' mode. Associative views and sections of the reinforcement are created accordingly. You can use the full range of functions for creating reinforcement. The Shell module can still be used to create the 3D shell and reinforcement.

Comparison of tools
The Associative Views module, which will replace the Shell module, provides a number of advanced tools in addition to the common basic tools. You can create or modify dimensions later as well as change the appearance of views and sections without having to create them from scratch. Use for Shell, Convert to Shell, Convert to 3D

You do not need these tools when working with the Associative Views module as you can create the reinforcement directly in the 3D elements and generate the views and sections without having to convert the 3D elements first. All properties of the 3D elements are retained. You can also make modifications without having to convert the 3D elements or associative views or sections. Create View from View, Section, Any View,

Create View Perpendicular to Surface These tools are combined into two tools in the Associative Views module. You can specify whether a normal view, a view of an inclined area or a custom view is to be created in the Input options of the Create View and Create Section tools. As opposed to the Shell module, you can also define a projection based on a plane or a custom projection when creating sections. While creating views and sections, you can define the display type (wireframe model or hidden line image), make settings for the hidden line image and specify what is to be dimensioned and how. Settings for the intersected component edges and the section object can be made in the section parameters. The program presents an appropriate label after you have placed the view or section. The section identifier is automatically incremented by 1 with each new section (if a section identifier is specified in the Section dialog box). Note: You need to select the individual elements in order to create views and sections in the Associative Views module. If you want to create a view or section from an entire view, select the view/section border.

Unfold Shell

These tools are currently not included in the Associative Views module. Convert View to Section, Convert Section to View

These tools are also provided in the Associative Views module. In addition, you can create appropriate labels. Label View The Associative Views module also allows you to label views and sections later. However, you will not need this tool often as you can create appropriate labels while generating and converting views and sections. View or Section Display This too is currently not included in the Associative Views module. However, you can use the Add to View and Remove from View tools to specify the scope of elements displayed in views and sections. Copy View/Section, View/Section, Move View/Section, Rotate

Delete View/Section

You do not need these tools as the Associative Views module provides an intuitive (see "Intuitive approach" on page 174) way of editing associative views and sections. You can use the view border to specify whether the view itself or the elements of the view are edited. Show Clipping Path, Delete Clipping Path

You can define how the clipping path and the section object are displayed in the section parameters when creating a section. These settings can be modified at any time using the Modify View and Section Properties tool. The Show Clipping Path tool lets you display the section object of a section with or without clipping area in a view, section or in 3D elements.

Hidden Line View,

Wireframe View

These tools are not provided as separate tools in the Associative Views module. You can define the type of display while creating views and sections. These settings can be modified at any time using Modify View and Section Properties tool. Both the the wireframe view and the hidden line view are directly derived from the 3D model. Switching between these two views does not cause any data to be lost. Merge Views You do not need this tool when working with the Associative Views module as you can add 3D elements to existing views and sections at any time using the Add to View tool. You can configure the program to automatically use 3D components in the Associative Views module's options. The Copy/Move Elements between Documents tool also allows you to combine elements in views.

Recommended approach
Project Organization
Allplan 2008 provides a new option for structuring drawing files within projects - the building structure (see "Working with the building structure" on page 10), which is particularly useful for applying a logical structure to a building. In architecture, the advantage of working with the building structure is that views, sections and building lists can be generated quickly and easily. An important difference between the building structure and the fileset structure is that each drawing file can only be assigned once in the building structure. However, when it comes to designing reinforcement, drawing files are multiply used for different reinforcement drawings. Therefore, we recommend that you work with filesets. In this mode, all you need to do is select the relevant fileset and all associated drawing files are available. To do this in the building structure, select the relevant drawing files assigned to the individual structural levels and use the shortcut menu of the project to save the different status settings as a favorite, which you can retrieve later.

Associative views

169

When working with the building structure, you cannot place detailing windows in filesets or assemble layouts using filesets. When the architectural floor plan does not need to be integrated in a layout, we recommend that you create the reinforcement in a separate drawing file. This ensures that the 3D model and the associative views and sections are generated separately (as with the shell). If associative views and sections already exist for the shell, the program creates the 3D model of the reinforcement in the current drawing file and the reinforcement views in the drawing files with the shell views. In this case, you need to make sure that the drawing file with the shell views is current when you create new views and sections. In the case of a 2D shell, the 3D model and the reinforcement views are created in the current drawing file. It is a good idea to use layers, which allow you to specify the scope of the reinforcement displayed in the associative views and sections. Note: Reinforcement you enter in the negative z direction in 3D elements or in a 2D shell is not created as an associative view and does not get a view border.

Mixing views
You should try to avoid using "old" engineering views and new associative views and sections in the same drawing file. We recommend the following approach: If you want to use Allplan 2008 to complete a layout in which Shell module, you you have created the shell using the should continue your work using this module. New reinforcement you create in the old shell is automatically created as an "old" engineering view. If you want to use Allplan 2008 to complete a layout in which you have placed reinforcement created in 'reinforce using model' mode in a 2D shell, you can assign the new reinforcement to the existing views or create the new reinforcement in a separate drawing file. New reinforcement you create in existing views is automatically created as an "old" engineering view. Reinforcement to which you assign a new viewing direction is automatically created as associative views.

Transparent shell in animation

When you use associative views and sections, the 3D elements are displayed in animation instead of the shell. Therefore, the setting you make in the Animation Settings has no effect on the shell. If you still want to display the 3D elements as transparent elements in animation, you can do the following: When the Color stands for pen option is enabled and you do not use surfaces in animation: 1 Create all concrete components using the same color, which does not match a defined pen color, or assign this color to the components later. 2 Use the this color. 3 In animation, disable the Color stands for pen option in Show/Hide.

When the Color stands for pen option is disabled and you do not use surfaces in animation: 1 Use the Surface Settings tool to specify the transparency for the pen colors assigned to the concrete components. Make sure that the redefined pen colors are not used as display colors. Otherwise, components with these colors always appear transparent, regardless of the Color stands for pen option. 2 In animation, enable the Color stands for pen option in Show/Hide. When you use surfaces in animation: 1 Create all concrete components using the same surface or assign this surface to the components later. For example, you can use the schalung.surf file, which uses Animation Settings for the shell. the setting you made in the If necessary, remove the file's Hidden attribute in the Design folder of the project so that you can save changes. When you create the components using Content (e.f Allplan IBD), the correct surfaces are already assigned. 2 If you now want to display the components with or without transparency in animation, click a component with the right

Intuitive approach

Allplan 2008

Intuitive approach
As opposed to the Shell module, special tools are not required for editing associative views and sections. All associative views and sections are created with a border that does not appear in printouts. To edit the view itself (not the elements of the view!), select a tool on the Edit toolbar (e.g. move, rotate, delete, ...) and click the border of the view. Alternatively, click the relevant edit tool on the shortcut menu of the view border. Note: When you select the border of the view, you can still create a view or a section based on an existing view or section without having to select all elements.

Special feature relevant to selecting section objects

Sections objects cannot be edited using the approach described above. When you select the section object without border in a section and the action you perform (e.g. Mirror and Copy, Copy, ...) produces a new section object or deletes the existing one, the view itself is copied or deleted (not the section object!). Note: You cannot delete section objects in the Shell module.

Surfaces
In Allplan 2008, surfaces are associated using their names (an internal number was used in Allplan 2006). This facilitates data exchange as missing surface files are listed when you exchange drawing files and can be imported anytime later. Surface files have the extension .surf ("surface") and replace SFS and SFI files. A preview is displayed in the Open file dialog box (Thumbnails setting). Note: Textures, bitmaps etc. used in NDW documents can be saved together with the relevant document. Very large bitmaps that cannot be saved with the document are saved in the same folder as the document.

Several cameras can be modified simultaneously

You can move and rotate several cameras simultaneously using the Set Camera Path tool. Do the following: Select one or more cameras in the Camera path area. Enter the relative displacement in meters or the relative rotation in degrees. Click Yes to acknowledge the prompt. The cameras change and the camera path is calculated again.

Shadow
Quality can be set for shadow calculations
You can use the Set Display Parameters tool to define the quality of the shadow computation. When set to 0 (= disabled, this is the default), the accuracy of the calculation is defined automatically depending on the distance between the observer and the model. If the quality obtained with the default setting is insufficient as small elements are not displayed, for example, enter a value between 1 and 100. Consequently, the results will be more accurate and the operation will take much longer. Entering 0 switches this option off.
