Dr. Eray Baran 5) Solid cylinders ac and cd are made of the same material (E=55 GPa) and welded together at c. Cylinder ac has a diameter of 80 mm and cylinder cd has a diameter of 35 mm. Determine the displacement of points c and d under the effect of forces shown.

6) A composite cross section is made by attaching two aluminum plates to sides of a steel I400 beam as shown. Determine the maximum stress in aluminum and in steel when this cross section is loaded with a moment of 35 kN-m with respect to a-axis. Esteel=200 GPa, Ealuminum=70 GPa. b

7) A horizontal load P is applied as shown to a short section of an IPE 270 section. Knowing that the maximum stress in the member can not exceed 240 MPa, determine the largest value of load P.

9) The lumped mass model of a steel school building is given below. The structural system is moment frames. The total dead load (including the self weight) and live load (including the snow load) on each floor were calculated to be: Floor #1, #2, #3: Roof: Roof DL=550 kgf/m2 DL=400 kgf/m2 LL=400 kgf/m2 LL=300 kgf/m2 The floor area (of each floor and the roof) is 500 m2.
Floor #3

When calculating the building period, use the following data: Level Roof 3 2 1 dfi (meters) 1.7*10-5 1.6*10-5 1.5*10-5 1.3*10-5
Floor #1 Floor #2

Calculate the seismic base shear using the Equivalent Lateral Static Force procedure explained in the Turkish Earthquake Code. Distribute the total seismic base shear among the floors, and draw the story shear diagram. Use the data given in next page. Assume that the structure is located at the city center (you will need this information to determine the earthquake zone).
