Pollution Control

Singapore has long recognized the importance of maintaining and protecting its environment, in balance with the continued growth of the countrys population and industrial base. The National Environment Agency (NEA) is responsible for air and water pollution control, as well as hazardous substances and toxic industrial wastes control. NEA monitors the ambient air quality and the quality of water bodies in Singapore. It is also responsible for the formulation and implementation of joint programmes on transboundary pollution with neighbouring countries. Through its Central Building Plan Unit (CBPU) NEA ensures that environmental factors are incorporated into land use planning, development and building control of new developments. Three key strategies comprise NEAs approach to managing the environment. These are: Prevention Appropriate land use planning and the provision of environmental infrastructure; establishment of preventive controls Enforcement Stringent enforcement of the controls that have been put in place Monitoring Regular assessment of the environment to ensure that the existing pollution control measures are adequate

NEA also controls the import, use, storage and transportation of hazardous substances, and ensures the safe handling, treatment and disposal of toxic industrial wastes. The success of these environmental protection programmes is evident today. Singapore air quality meets international ambient air quality standards and is comparable with the best cities in the world. All inland waters support aquatic life and coastal waters generally meet the recreational water standards.

Benefits of Green Labels

The green label is widely recognised by ministries, governmental agencies, procurement and industry professionals in Singapore and regionally. Certified products meet the stringent standards in being environmentally friendly. The green label makes it easy for purchase and procurement by those who choose products on environmental grounds. Choosing green label products will contribute to lowering negative environmental impacts such as global warming. Products with green labels are produced using less energy eg.fuel, and companies producing these products manage their waste properly with sustainability. They do not release as much harmful gases into the atmosphere as compared to a company producing products without a green label. Since less greenhouse gases are produced during the manufacturing process, it helps to reduce global warming.
