Tests in CRM Laboratory

Physical section
1. Hardness: - This may be defined as the resistance of the material to any kind of indentation. With two different machines, hardness is measured in Rockwell B scale (RB) & Vickers Number (HV/VPN), both for CRCA and Galvanised material. 2. Tensile Test: - With the aid of a Universal testing machine, following parameters are measured both on Galvanised & CRCA material. Yield Strength: - It is the stress at which plastic deformation of the material starts. Actually it is the stress developed at a specified strain of 0.2% Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS): - it is the maximum strength of the material at a given temperature, indicated by the highest point of the Engineering Stress Strain diagram in the plastic zone, from where the load starts dropping. Percentage Elongation (%EL): - It is the total elongation till fracture, quantified as the total elongation on the gauge length divided by the initial gauge length. n Value :- It gives an indication of materials stretchability. It is defined as strain hardening coefficient of true stress true strain curve. Lankford Parameter r bar: - It gives an indication of materials drawability. The ratio of true strain in width direction and thickness direction is known as plastic strain ratio, expressed as r. r bar = (r0+2r450+r900)/4 which is known as normal anisotropy. This is also measured by drawability tester, which uses the principle of magnetostriction. This test is performed both for galvanized and CRCA material. 3. Surface Roughness Test: - The surface roughness profile of cold rolled steel sheets are quantified through various parameter like Ra, Ry or Rmax, Rz, Peak count, etc. All these parameters are quantitatively determined in surface roughness test. 4. Reflectivity: - this is a measurement of the surface cleanliness of the material. Higher reflectivity value indicated better cleanliness. 5. Zn Coating: - This is the test for the Zinc coating thickness of the galvanized material. The output value is obtained in micron or gms/m2, with the aid of an X Ray detection unit. 6. Cupping Test: -This is a simple and widely used method of measuring formability of steel sheet, obtained in terms of the depth of cup till fracture. This

test is applied for CRCA material. For galv annealed material. A modified form of cupping test is used, which is known as Double Olsen Test, and the purpose of this test is to determine the powdering characteristics of the coating. 7. Lockforming Test: - This test is performed in order to qualitatively estimate the Zinc coating adherence of galvanized material, by subjecting the coated sheet to Pitts burg Lock forming Treatment. 8. Ball Impact Test: - This test gives a qualitative estimate the zinc coating adherence of galvanized material, when subjected to an impact load.

9. Bend Test: - In this test, the material is subjected to complete bending with zero bending radius. Commonly known as 0T bending. The purpose of this test is to estimate the bending performance of the material, and it is visually observed if cracks are formed at the tip of the bend.
