Dear Friend, When the survivors of the Holocaust speak, the rest of us would do well to listen. As one of the survivors of their liberation told his story, he included how the SS guards changed into civilian clothes and tried to hide. The G.I.s had the survivors point them out so they could be dealt with. Then he said something never to be forgotten: These men were not human. Human beings dont do what they did. How literally should that be taken? Was he speaking figuratively, saying that the men responsible for the camps were lacking pity, kindness or mercy? Or was he speaking literally, suggesting a nonhuman class of beings ? And the question arises naturally: Are there nonhuman beings? Oh, there are dogs and cats, but that we dont describe them as inhuman, do we? This may seem to you to be stepping into metaphysics. But this is not about flying saucers or visitors from another planet. This is simply going to the Bible and the spirit world. Jesus himself had an encounter with a nonhuman being immediately after his baptism. Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungered. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God (Matthew 4:1-4). This seems to be a deliberate act, an exposure of the Son of God to the devil. It may not be sophisticated to speak of a real, personal devil. There are people who say they are Christian who dont believe he exists. Lets agree, though, that Auschwitz, Dachau, and Buchenwald, were not metaphors. Hitler and the SS were not metaphors. They were quite literal to the very literal people who died there. But this biblical event is not presented to us as a parable or a metaphor. It is a deliberate act to expose Jesus to the tempter to dominate him. What we are dealing with here is reality, not a metaphor. And yes, Virginia, there is a real Devil. He has moved from the hospital to a skilled nursing center to continue the antibiotic regimen prescribed by his doctors to eliminate the staph infection from his body. He is also receiving daily speech and physical therapy. He has not experienced very much pain, but his appetite is poor. Your prayers about this would be most welcome.
