Montage
Description: Create a montage by blending two or more images and text. Section: Caryn Esplin, Comm 130 Section 2 Programs/Tools Used: Photoshop Date: 2.14.13 Objectives: How to use masks in photoshop How to use layers on photoshop How to use the clone stamp tool in photoshop Process: I put the rocks image on the bottom layer of the montage. I then put the dirt road image on the next layer. I used the clone stamp tool to add extra grass and a bigger path and to add more rocks. After that I put masks on both so that I could blend them together using the brush tool. Then I added a new layer and mask for the text. I added a drop shadow to the text, then I drew around both texts boxes using the wand tool, with a long horizontal line and then colored it with black and white and made each transparent. I then got rid of half the lines with the brush tool.
Brochure
Description: Create a duplex folding brochure Section: Caryn Esplin, Comm 130 Section 2 Program(s) / Tools used: Adobe Indesign, Photoshop Date: 3.27.13 Objectives: How to cut out the backgroud of a picture in photoshop How to do a text wrap in indesign How to line up a double sided project in indesign Process: For this project I started out setting up my two sided layout in indesign. I measuered the correct folding and cutting places and marked them so that I would know where to fold and cut and to know what pages were which. I then started designing my project. I also made up my own design and chose my own colors for the company. I made a simple logo in indesign just using the shape tool and the create outlines on the letters and just had it shown as MDB, the letter representing the comany name. For my text wrap I put the photo of both the dresser and the crib into photoshop and used the wand tool to select the white backgroud then I removed it so that the background was transparent so that I could wrap the text directly around the crib and dresser. I made sure that there were no hyphens or widows in my project.I stayed consistent with my design of the blue and purple and the lines with dots. I used the more intricuit design on the cover and the back and then I used a more simpler design on the inside so that I could stay consistent. I made sure that most everything was aligned including the picture on the front cover with the side colored bars. I used a san-serif font for my titles and a serif font for my body copy that was only 11 points. My pictures are high quality and the brochure has a good flow. I chose to use non-indented paragraph styling. I chose the offset fold, folded lanscape. I have it 8.5 x 11 with a 1/4 inch trim all around.
Letterhead
Description: Create a letterhead using an origional logo. Section: Caryn Esplin, Comm 130 Section 2 Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator; Adobe Indesign Date: 2.28.13 Objectives: How to put an illustrator logo into indesign. How to use shapes in indesign. How to change a logo in illustrator and then have the changes go into indesign without having to place a whole new image. Process: I first created the logo in illustrator. I used the shape tool to create the three boxes. Then I wrote out the letters ABC with the text tool. I then created outlines on them and ungrouped them so that I could move each piece freely. Once I did that I moved the letters over the shapes in order to create the look of baby letter blocks. For the letter head I started by placing the logo in the left hand corner. I then used repetition by creating more boxes with the shape tool and then used the same colors. I former the new boxes into a diagonal zigzag. I then added the name and number in the top right hand corner and then added the additional information lining the bottom of the page with the same colored boxes between each piece of information. I used a 10 point font. I left a lot of white space for the letter.
Business Card
Description: Create a business card using an origional logo. For the business card I aligned all the information in the bottom left hand corner and used a 9 point font. I then added the logo in the top left hand corner and added three more boxes near the information in the bottom right hand corner in order to keep the repetition like in the letter head. I left lots of white space in the middle and the top right hand corner.
Logos
Description: Create and get feedback on three different logos for a company. Section: Caryn Esplin, Comm 130 Section 2 Programs/Tools Used: Adobe illustrator Date: 2.23.13 Top 3 things learned: How to use the pen tool in illustrator. How to make words into individual pieces that can be manipulated. How to trace images in order to make them my own. Process: For my first logo I used the pen tool to trace an image of a foot print I found from google. I then fixed the traced image using the convert-anchor-point tool and the direct select tool to make the edges more smooth. I then chose a color for the foot print and chose the apple casual font to use for my companys name. I reflected the footprint image and then left aligned the words For the second logo I used the pen tool once again to trace an image of a pacifier. When I finished tracing the image it looked like someone traced the image but I think that it makes it look more childlike which I liked for the image representing a baby furniture store. I then used the font chalkboard and overlapped the words over the image. I colored them with a light baby blue for the pacifier and a light pink for the words so that it would represent more clearly the baby aspect of the store. For the third logo I used chalkboard font for the letters ABC. I then customized the type so I could recreate the letters. I typed out the letters and then selected them with the create outlines so I could manipulate them how I liked. I then colored each letter the 3 colors I think of when I think babies, and then I typed Baby Furniture.
Flier
Description: Create a basic black and white flier. Section: Caryn Esplin, Comm 130 Section 2 Program(s) / Tools used: Adobe Indesign Date: 1.23.13 Objectives: How to place images correctly and how to do correct alignment. How to correctly link images so they do not turn out pixely. The importance of repetition and contrast in a piece, especially when its black and white. Process: I first sketched out four different sketches to choose from but I ended up using the first one I drew. I then went to adobe indesign to place the image and the text. I used the repetition of the same color grey in the heading boxes and the botton of the title. I also emphasized the word graduate in order to attract the attention of the graduates to the conference. The corner of the hat in my image points to the text to draw the eye of the reader toward the information. I also used transparency in order to blend the logo and the photo together and also to make the image a little less dark in order for the information to stand out.
Event Ad
Description: Design an advertising poster for a community fundraiser. Section: Caryn Esplin, Comm 130 Section 2 Program(s) / Tools used: Microsoft Word Date: 2.2.13 Objectives: How to use microsoft word processor more efficiently and how to use the different aspects of it to create things as I would in adobe indesign. How to Scan an image properly and what things to look for once the image has been scanned and how to use what resolution when scanning. How to unlock images in microsoft so I can move them around and crop them and resize them so much easier. Process: I found and scanned an image from a magazine. After looking at many images I found one of high quality that would work well for an event idea. After I scanned in the image using the resolution of 300 so it was clear and crisp, I took the image to microsoft to create my ad. Once in microsoft, I used publishing layout in order to create my ad. Once I came up with the idea for a breast cancer fundraiser I searched for potential sponsors and beneficiaries. With all the information I wrote out what I wanted to say and then started arranging my ad. I used the colors from the image to use for the colors on the ad. I chose pink so that it would match the theme of breast cancer and used old style font and script font for my body copy and title. After many critiques and a little more instruction in word, I came back to it to arrange my ad as shown above.
Web Page
Description: Use HTML and CSS to design a web page showing and describing the origional logo I created. Section: Caryn Esplin, Comm 130 Section 2 Programs/Tools Used: Text Wrangler, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop Date: 3.12.13 Objectives: How to validate HTML using W3.org How to change fonts and colors using CSS How to indent and HTML code Process: I started off creating my webpage using text wrangler. I had never used HTML or CSS before this. The process was a lot simpler than I had first thought. Once I learned the rules of how to make the HTML and CSS codes it was simple to put it into text wrangler. Once I finished my codes I put them into http://www.W3.org in order to check if my codes were correct and I had a lot less mistakes than I would have previously thought. Once I learned what the mistakes were and fixed them I was able to validate my website. Once I typed up all my information and inserted my logo at the size I wanted it, I attached my per-made CSS document onto my HTML. Once I had my CSS I was able to fill in the colors and the fonts I wanted for my website. My colors match my logo. I was able to find and match those colors by using the eye dropper in Photoshop in order to match the colors on my logo exactly. I used Times New Roman and Verdana for my fonts. I put in some back up fonts just in case the viewers browser doesnt have the first font I chose.
Imaging
Description: Take and edit your own photo with a filter. Section: Caryn Esplin, Comm 130 Section 2 Programs/Tools Used: Photoshop, Digital Camera Date: 2.9.13 Objectives: How to properly use a point and shoot digital camera. I learned how to use zoom properly and how to focus. How to use photoshop to discolor part of an image. I made part of my picture black and white. How to crop photos and change the resolution on photoshop. Process: I first used a digital point and shoot camera to take my photo. I chose the photo of my friend looking into a mirror. I chose to tell the story with my picture. The story I tried to portray was that this man sees a dull distorted person in himself when he looks in the mirror but to the rest of the world he is normal. I did this by changing the image in the mirror to be black and white for dull and I used a filter to change the mirrored image to be distorted to show the person that he sees when he looks in the mirror. I then cropped my image to 6 x6 and changed the resolution of my picture to 150. I then copied the image onto an 8 x 11 paper and changed the alignment to fit the specifications.
