Social Media - The End of Individual Privacy or A New Era in Interpersonal Relationship Narrowed Topic: A new era for interpersonal relationships and communication Audience: Users of social media. Thesis: Social Media is an avenue through which persons are able to connect with old and new friends and a way in which businesses can interact with consumers and strengthen their consumer base. Topic Sentence I: The use of popular social networking sites is a medium through which people share ideas, communicate, relax and connect. A) Social networking complements real life relationship, it does not replace face to

face interaction but simply augment connections.

B)

Social networking can provide opportunities for new relationships whether

your kids friends are close to home or across the world, (Parent Further, 2012).

C)

It allows for new information to be circulated rapidly and important news and

details to be spread widely.

Topic Sentence II: Social Media not only forms casual relationships but are also used as a business tool. A) Dr. Marcia Forbes in a presentation made on July 2, 2012 spoke of how she used

social media to her advantage to meet the art designer of her new book cover.

B)

Many promoters and marketing manager have taken advantage of the ease of

connecting with consumers to get feedback through the use of social networking sites.

C)

Local Companies such as Digicel and other major businesses use social

networking to interact with consumers and to host giveaways and other competitions in order to enhance relationships with customers.

Counter claim: Once information is posted on the internet it is there for the entire world to view. A) Social Media makes it easier for criminals to commit identity theft, fraud and

among other devious actions.

Social Media allows for spams and viruses to travel faster than ever, it just takes

one person to be infected for a chain reaction to be started.

C)

It is believed that social media sites and agencies mine and then sell personal

information to companies.

Refutation: Social Networking sites have privacy settings that allow users to control who can see their information. It is the negligence and ignorance of these users that give it the perception that their personal information is available for the viewing of the whole internet.

Conclusion: The revolution has started, humans are developing at a fast rate, there is a need for us to share information and connect. Social Media has brought about a new manner in which persons communicate in their daily life and it has also brought advancement in the business world.
