Maintenance Diesel Engine Question 1. Why is the importance of maintenance program? 2. What is ideal period for that program?

3. Look at the picture below! There are items of diesel engine that need to be checked. What are they?

4. How to check that those parts? 5. Is it important to have a regular check? 6. For some people, maintenance is expensive and time consuming. Do you agree with opinion?

Answer 1. The importance of an effective maintenance program cannot be overlooked. As in personal health care insurance, maintenance may be considered the heath care of our manufacturing machines and equipment. It is required to effectively reduce waste and run an efficient. The cost of regular maintenance is very small when it is compared to the cost of a major breakdown at which time there is no production. 2. The ideal period for maintenance program is once in a month.

3. There are items of diesel engine that need to be checked.

1. Visual check 2. Fuel 3. Fuel filter 4. Engine oil 5. Gearbox oil 6. Fresh water level. 4. How to check parts. 1. Visual check. Check belts and hoses for cuts, splits, or fraying and look out for oil or coolant leaks. 2. Fuel. Make sure you have enough fuel for your intended trip, plus a reserve of about 20% of the tank's capacity and make sure the fuel tap is open. 3. Fuel filter. Some boats have a trans-parent water separator/filter in the fuel line. Inspect the bowl for water or dirt and drain off any visible contamination.

4. Engine oil. Check the engine oil level with the dipstick and top up if necessary to keep the level between the 'max' and 'min' marks. 5. Gearbox oil. Check the engine oil level with the dipstick. NOTE: Some gearbox oil levels can only be checked with the engine running. 6. Fresh water level. Some engines have fresh water cooling systems as well as raw water. Carefully remove the header tank cap and top up with water/ anti-freeze mixture if necessary to bring the level within about 50 mm of the top. Replace the header tank cap. 5. Yes, it is. The main purpose of regular maintenance is to ensure that all equipment required for production is operating at 100% efficiency at all times. Minor problems can be detected and corrected before they become a major problem that can shut down a production line. 6. The cost of regular maintenance is very small when it is compared to the cost of a major breakdown at which time there is no production. A recent survey showed the actual cost for a breakdown between four to fifteen times the maintenance costs. When the breakdown causes production to stop, the costs are very high because no parts are being produced.
