THE ADMINISTRATION OF PUPIL/STUDENT GUIDANCE AND DISCIPLINE

MEANING & SCOPE OF GUIDANCE From the word guide, which means to direct, to help, to assist Guidance is any help given by one person to another in making choices and adjustments and in solving problems. Guidance aims to help the individual to become adjusted to his present situation so as to provide the maximum development for him and help him plan for his own future in terms of his interests, aptitudes, and needs.

THE NEED FOR GUIDANCE 1. Guidance id based on human needs Everybody needs assistance at some time in his life. In every walk of life, with every changing condition that confronts the individual, the need for guidance is great. 2. The need for guidance from the standpoint of the individual Due to the rapid increase of the complexity of industrial and economic life, certain changes in the condition of living and the amazing development of the educational facilities greatly increased the individuals independence on the outside help. 3. The need for guidance from the standpoint of society Societys safety and progress demand each individual contributes to the welfare of others. This means that an individual should be in an occupation where he had been trained that he can make society better and contribute his bit to improve the conditions of his group.

GUIDANCE SERVICES

1. Individual Inventory Service (IIS) Designed to gather all reliable data, information and records to assemble and compile these materials for their functional use.

Information Service (IS) Make available to pupils or student kinds of information not ordinarily provided through the instructional programs.

3. Counseling Service (CS) Service offered not only by the counselor but also teachers and administrators.

Career Development and Placement Service (CDPS) Helps the child secure the most effective relationship to a job or next step in his educational or personal program. It may be educational, vocational, and curricular in character.

5. Follow-up Service (FS) Is concerned with what happens to pupils while in school or after they left school. 6. Psychological Testing Service (PTS) It refers to the administration, scoring and interpretation of psychological tests to individual or group of students used to assess his/their behavioral tendencies. Psychological tests are also used as tools in counseling students. 7. Referral and Consultation The guidance office maintains professional affiliations to outside professionals and agencies and referral of students to these persons or agencies are done whenever the need arises.

PRINCIPLES OF GUIDANCE 1. The administrator or the counselor should bear in mind that guidance services should be based on the students aims, interest and needs.

2. The administrator or counselor must bear in mind that guidance service should be organized to deal, not only with the serious problems after they have arise, but also with causes of such problems in order to prepare a better solution. 3. The administrator or counselor must keep in mind that no two individuals are identical in native endowment or environmental background. 4. They should provide for socialists in the organization of the guidance problem. 5. Proper adaptation of the curriculum and method to the needs of individual pupils is best promoted through guidance activities of teachers working in a democratically organized school system. 6. Guidance is counsel, not compulsion. 7. Guidance services shouls not be limited to few. 8. The chief concern of guidance is the development of an individual,.
